The Internet Archive, a nonprofit digital library that has served as a main repository of internet history, is back online with limited functionality after weeks of being harassed by hackers. “Safe to resume but might need further maintenance, in which case it will be suspended again. The California-based Archive has run the Wayback Machine, devoted to preserving the internet as a historical and cultural artifact, since 1996. Starting on Tuesday, the Archive came under repeated DDoS attacks and was briefly replaced with a taunting message from the hackers. “We never really know the true motivation behind most attacks until much later, if at all.”

A massive IT outage on Friday caused widespread disruption across different sectors worldwide. An expert said the outage, linked to a CrowdStrike update, mirrors Y2K fears that never came true. Air travel, banks, and 911 lines are among some of the many services affected by the global outage. Y2K passed with barely a blip, but over two decades later, one web security consultant says those fears have finally been realized, thanks to a massive IT outage on Friday. "This is basically what we were all worried about with Y2K, except it's actually happened this time," Troy Hunt, an Australian web security expert, said in an X post.

The CrowdStrike software at fault operates at what’s called the kernel level of a computer, a much deeper level than what more ordinary applications such as browsers or video games do. For businesses with hundreds or thousands of laptops, desktops and servers running CrowdStrike’s security software, an individual human may have to perform that process over and over and over again. Because CrowdStrike’s security software is running on countless individual computers all around the globe, the update that got pushed to those devices caused them all to shut down, virtually simultaneously. The CrowdStrike bug may have initially been conflated with the Microsoft issue because CrowdStrike’s error affected only Windows machines. As of Friday morning, Microsoft said the issue with Microsoft 365 had been resolved and that the situation was improving.

Hackers have stolen email addresses from over 200 million Twitter users, a cybersecurity firm said. Gal warned in an additional LinkedIn post that hackers will take advantage of the database to hack "high profile accounts," "crypto Twitter accounts," and "political accounts." Bleeping Computer reported that it was able to confirm the validity of many of the email addresses listed in Wednesday's leak. Gal had first reported that hackers had stolen the data of 400 million Twitter users in December. Hunt said in a tweet that he had discovered around 211 million unique email addresses linked to the Twitter leak.
CNN —Email addresses linked to more than 200 million Twitter profiles are currently circulating on underground hacker forums, security experts say. The apparent data leak could expose the real-life identities of anonymous Twitter users and make it easier for criminals to hijack Twitter accounts, the experts warned, or even victims’ accounts on other websites. The trove of leaked records also includes Twitter users’ names, account handles, follower numbers and the dates the accounts were created, according to forum listings reviewed by security researchers and shared with CNN. Troy Hunt, a security researcher, said Thursday that his analysis of the data “found 211,524,284 unique email addresses” that had been leaked. The account data could also be valuable to hackers who can use the information as part of password-reset attempts and account takeovers.
LONDON, Jan 5 (Reuters) - Hackers stole the email addresses of more than 200 million Twitter users and posted them on an online hacking forum, a security researcher said Wednesday. It was not clear what action, if any, Twitter has taken to investigate or remediate the issue. Claims about the size and scope of the breach initially varied with early accounts in December saying 400 million email addresses and phone numbers were stolen. A major breach at Twitter may interest regulators on both sides of the Atlantic. The Data Protection Commission in Ireland, where Twitter has its European headquarters, and the U.S. Federal Trade Commission have been monitoring the Elon Musk-owned company for compliance with European data protection rules and a U.S. consent order respectively.
