I tried out two flight simulators, including one for a Boeing 737 Max. AdvertisementI write about planes nearly every day at Business Insider, but trying out a Boeing 737 Max flight simulator gave me new insights into just how much skill and dedication is required to be a pilot. CNN —The Federal Aviation Administration says that graduates of two college air traffic control programs can now bypass the agency’s backlogged training academy. The new announcement is the FAA’s latest move to tackle air traffic controller shortages that have plagued the air travel system, triggering flight delays and a burned-out controller corps. “The FAA is working to hire and train more air traffic controllers, in order to reverse the decades-long decline in our workforce and ensure the safety of the flying public,” FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker said in a statement. Graduates of Tulsa Community College and the University of Oklahoma can “begin immediate facility training,” skipping the FAA Air Traffic Controller Academy at Oklahoma City. CNN previously reported in May that the agency netted an increase of only 160 controllers during a recent hiring cycle.

The bureau also has agreed to a review by outside experts who will work to ensure that female recruits face a fair evaluation process. CNN —Despite a surge in hiring last year, air traffic control stations nationwide are still about 3,000 controllers short, according to new Federal Aviation Administration numbers. The staffing plans developed by the FAA and the union representing air traffic controllers calls for more than 14,600 controllers to fully staff towers and centers. But at the same time, its air traffic control organization lost more than 1,300 employees, including controllers who retired or candidates who dropped out of training. The union president representing air traffic controllers said that after accounting for departures, the agency netted an increase of only six new controllers that year. It also instructs the FAA to install additional simulators at air traffic control sites to speed up training progress.

How to Recognize a Tennis Prodigy

You may have seen it if you’re a tennis fan. The ad begins with a young boy of 10 or 11, sitting in a humble apartment watching Venus Williams on a tiny antique television. Of course the young Tiafoes in the ad were the product of a casting call, not the actual young Frances. But the producers did a good job finding someone who looked like the 11-year-old boy I met in 2009, when I spent a couple of months writing about the Junior Tennis Champions Center in College Park, Md., a then-obscure tennis training academy which had shockingly produced three boys in world’s top 20 of junior tennis. But here’s the relevant bit: During my reporting at the tennis center, I spent a day with a boy the coaches seemed to have a strange regard for.

UAE-based Emirates has launched a new private jet arm using Embraer Phenom 100EV business planes. Emirates hopes its new strategy will lure in more high-paying customers as private aviation booms. The demand for private aviation continues to hold strong post-pandemic, particularly in the Middle East where business travel has rebounded quicker than in other regions. On Wednesday, the carrier introduced a brand new on-demand charter service that will ferry elite customers from Dubai to cities in the Gulf region using a fleet of Embraer Phenom 100EV twin-engine private jets. "While it would give operators such as us stiff competition, business travel trends in the UAE still lean towards larger groups of ten travelers or more," she continued.

An ongoing pilot shortage has plagued US airlines since travel came roaring back post-pandemic. While some organizations — like the Regional Airline Association advocacy group — have praised the legalization, the Air Line Pilots Association has opposed it, Reuters reported. Increasing pilot payRegional flying has been particularly impacted by the pilot shortage, forcing airlines to slash dozens of flights to small markets and even ground regional jets. Other regional carriers like Mesa Airlines, Republic Airways, and Delta's wholly-owned airline Endeavor Air have also gotten pay increases. Lowering training requirementsRegional carrier Republic recently asked the FAA to reduce the flight hour requirement for pilots graduating from its LIFT pilot training academy.

Delta to launch flight academy to train more pilots

March 21 (Reuters) - Delta Air Lines Inc (DAL.N) said on Tuesday it would launch a flight academy to train pilots for the airline as the industry struggles with a shortage of aviators. The carrier said the academy, operated in partnership with training provider Skyborne Airline, would start training its first batch of students in June. The Delta Propel Pilot Academy will be based in a 12,000-square-foot facility situated within Skyborne's Florida campus, the statement said. Atlanta-based Delta joins United Airlines Holdings Inc (UAL.O), which agreed to purchase a flight training academy in Phoenix in 2020, in an effort to bolster its roster of pilots. LOS ANGELES—Monday night’s college football championship between Georgia and Texas Christian pits one the sport’s powerhouses and one of its unheralded outsiders. It’s also a test case for what types of teams can make it to the sport’s pinnacle in 2023. With the sport in a dramatic period of flux, the blueprint for successful programs is up for debate. Schools like Georgia have institutional backing to spend boatloads of money to recruit the best players and can ferry them into the top rounds of the NFL draft after winning collegiate championships. The depth of the roster is such that practices are sometimes harder than games.
Instead, the coveted junior recruit was benched, due to a decision from the state’s governing body for high school sports. Meanwhile, in a growing number of states, including California, even high school athletes can enter contracts. But boosters can pay prospective students through NIL deals, as long as the money is not contingent on enrollment or athletic performance. A University of Miami booster has earmarked $10 million to sign players to NIL deals through his companies. Cunningham’s message to high school athletes is “the grass isn’t always greener,” even in California.
Britain's Halfords targets retirees in recruitment drive
  + stars: | 2022-11-23 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
LONDON, Nov 23 (Reuters) - Halfords (HFD.L) is aiming to recruit 1,000 new technicians over the next 12 months by attracting retirees to work in its car repair centres, as Britain's tight labour market drives employers to think up new hiring strategies. "We need to be ambitious and creative in the way we go about meeting the demand for technicians," Halfords Chief Executive Graham Stapleton said in a statement. Compared to 2019, Britain had 600,000 more people this year who were not participating in the jobs market. By offering more flexible working, including part-time hours, and apprenticeships to older people, plus opening a training academy, Halfords hopes it will be able to recruit retirees. Operating from over 600 garages across Britain, Halfords is the largest provider of motoring services and it expects demand for vehicle servicing, maintenance and annual MOT tests on cars to increase because the country's car fleet is ageing.
WHITTIER, Calif. (AP) — A car struck 22 Los Angeles County sheriff’s recruits on a training run around dawn Wednesday and five were critically injured, authorities said. A total of 23 people were injured, including the driver, said Los Angeles County Fire Department spokesperson Capt. In addition to the five who were critically injured, there were four with moderate injuries and 14 with minor injuries. The driver was among those with minor injuries, she said. NBC Los AngelesA Sheriff’s Department statement said a recruit class was hit by a vehicle at about 6:26 a.m. during a training run.
Focusing more long-term, though, airlines are boosting training programs to unprecedented levels and trying to attract a younger and more diverse next generation of aviators. That formula has been adopted by regional airlines, too, such as Mesa Air Group , Republic, Envoy, Cape Air and SkyWest . The regionals have always been an entry point for the mainline airlines' pilots, providing them the requisite number of hours of flight time needed before advancing. "The pilot shortage has abated to some extent," Murray said, "but at the expense of lower frequencies and fewer connection opportunities for travelers." Regional airline Republic has its own flight school, the Leadership in Flight Training Academy, in Indianapolis.
The FAA blocked Republic Airways' request to cut the number of hours co-pilots need to fly for training. Republic Airways said the proposal would help address the pilot shortage, but the FAA disagreed. The FAA said in a denial exemption that Republic's request "would adversely affect safety." The FAA said Republic's pilot training cannot be compared with military training programs, per the denial exemption. The agency added the argument that Republic's request would address "a perceived pilot shortage" was "overly simplistic."
Regional airlines such as Republic say they are facing a pilots shortage. Aviation-safety regulators rejected a proposal by a regional airline seeking to reduce the number of hours that some co-pilots need to begin flying passengers. Indianapolis-based Republic Airways Holdings Inc. had asked the Federal Aviation Administration to allow pilots who go through a special program at the airline’s training academy to begin flying on a restricted license after 750 hours of training—half what is generally required.
