Along with Greyhound, Megabus became one of the two mega-carriers in the United States. The intercity bus industry is not in complete disarray, but things are not going great there. In 1995, she became the first science fiction writer to be awarded a MacArthur “genius” grant. “‘Kindred’ was a story of ordinary people trapped in fantastic circumstances,” Butler wrote in a 1988 notebook. Her point of view was one not traditionally found in science fiction and, simply by writing, she demanded a larger world.
