CNN —Waymo issued a recall for its 672 driverless cars to make them less likely to drive into telephone poles. The recall follows a May 21 accident in Phoenix, Arizona, in which a Waymo driverless car hit a telephone pole that was installed in the roadway in an alley. The vehicle was pulling over to pick up a passenger when it struck the pole at low speed, according to Waymo. While the car was severely damaged, no one was hurt, according to documents Waymo filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The recall applies only to the fleet of modified Jaguar I-Pace SUVs Waymo owns and operates itself.

A Nissan Murano, which was parked in Phillip Hill’s driveway when it caught fire. A search on NHTSA’s website indicated there was an outstanding unrepaired recall on the Hills’ Murano. Philip Hill had been fixing the garage, so the couple’s two cars were parked in the driveway. “As you can see from the video, that vehicle is so close to the house,” Philip Hill told CNN.

☆ Hyundai and Kia warn drivers of 90,000 vehicles to park outside due to fire risk

These include 2023 Kia Soul and Sportage vehicles and 2023 and 2024 Kia Seltos models. Last year, owners of nearly 500,000 Kia and Hyundai vehicles were, similarly, warned to park their vehicles away from structures because of a risk of fire. Hyundai and Kia also recalled over 250,000 vehicles in 2022, again warning drivers to park outside, because of the potential for fire from a trailer hitch wiring issue. In a 2021 recall, owners of 380,000 Kia vehicles were also warned to park outside because there was a risk of fire from electronic circuits under the hood. In 2020, Kia recalled 295,000 vehicles because they could catch fire while driving because of fuel leaks.

☆ Tesla recalls almost 3,500 Model Y cars for loose bolts

New York CNN —Tesla is recalling 3,470 2022-2023 Model Y cars due to bolts in the second-row seat back frames not being secured properly. On Model Y vehicles, the second-row driver- and passenger-side seat back frames are secured with four bolts per seat back. Tesla found five warranty claims regarding the bolts since last December, but is not aware of any injuries or deaths due to it. Tesla will inspect the bolts and tighten them if necessary for free of charge, and owner notification letters will be mailed. Tesla will attempt to fix the feature, which costs $15,000, through an over-the-air software update, the notice added.

Until now, the Treasury Department considered the Mustang Mach-E a car, not an SUV, for purposes of tax credits. The tax rules seemed to defy both common sense and what the EPA was saying. Before, the Treasury Department had been relying on vehicle definitions used by the National Highway Traffic Administration to administer Corporate Average Fuel Economy regulations. “This change will allow crossover vehicles that share similar features to be treated consistently,” the Treasury Department said in an announcement. 2023 and who didn’t qualify for a tax credit under the old rules may now qualify, Treasury said in its announcement.
