But he acknowledged that timing is key because our portfolio discipline mandates that we consider lightening up our stock exposure in an overbought market. In fact, AMD was our worst-performing stock for the entire week, losing more than 7% following the prior week's 1.8% slide. Energy was the worst sector of the week for the market as oil prices sank. But opponents ignore both the history of so-called meritocracy, and the fact that DEI programs benefit business, Frazier and Chenault argue. But they said opponents have weaponized select examples of diversity programs that are not practiced widely to oppose DEI entirely. Brandon Bell/Getty ImagesMeanwhile, conservative legal groups are now filing lawsuits targeting companies’ diversity initiatives, and Republican leaders like Florida Gov. Frazier and Chenault said there was a split between companies that rushed to create diversity programs in the wake of George Floyd’s murder in 2020 and companies that have embedded these programs into their business. “For those companies that had integrated DEI into the way they do business, fundamentally, it’s marbled into the meat, so to speak.

"Ultimately shirking fiduciary responsibility to employees, consumers, and shareholders." Twenty civil rights organizations sent a letter Thursday to Fortune 1000 companies calling for them to recommit to diversity, equity and inclusion, after several major companies scaled back their efforts. She emphasized that LGBTQ+ consumers have $1.4 trillion of buying power, as reported by the National LGBT Chamber of Commerce. But a small, well-funded, and extreme group of right-wing activists is attempting to pressure companies into abandoning their DEI programs. Abandoning DEI will have long-term consequences on business success -- ultimately shirking fiduciary responsibility to employees, consumers, and shareholders.

But more damaging than the cringe of a tone-deaf tweet about diversity is when companies give up on the performance altogether. Molson Coors is the latest addition to a growing list of companies reversing their diversity, equity and inclusion policies. Molson Coors will also ensure all corporate charitable giving programs are focused on supporting "core business goals" such as alcohol responsibility, disaster relief efforts and promoting access to higher education. Although conservative activist Robby Starbuck characterized the moves as preemptive changes in response to his probe into the company's DEI practices one week ago, Molson Coors says in its memo that the decision "has been in process since March." Molson Coors' decision comes after a wave of retailers over the summer took a step back in their DEI efforts. Corporate DEI practices received renewed interest in the wake of the murder of George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter protests of 2020, but have struggled in the aftermath of the Supreme Court decision to overturn affirmative action in colleges.

For companies like Costco, Starbucks, and Dicks Sporting Goods, which have robust and well-established loyalty programs, a common thread is that rewards members are the biggest spenders. "For price-conscious consumers, loyalty programs provide opportunities to spend more comfortably thanks to discounts and deals." And Dick's has said loyalty members who also use its fast-growing youth sport management software spend twice as much with the retailer than loyalty members who don't. Beauty store chain Ulta, which already has its Ultamate Rewards program, is testing a complimentary program that includes 42 mini-games, Glossy reported in May. Of course, effective loyalty programs aren't just about encouraging existing members to spend more, they also depend on getting more casual shoppers to sign up.

The Federal Trade Commission is launching an investigation into so-called "surveillance pricing," seeking more information about how artificial intelligence is used to change pricing rapidly based on data about customer behavior and characteristics. The FTC says the practice allows companies to charge different customers, different prices. "Firms that harvest Americans' personal data can put people's privacy at risk," FTC Chair Lina Khan said in a news release. Kahn describes surveillance pricing as a "shadowy ecosystem of pricing middlemen." Mastercard said in a statement, "We will cooperate with the FTC in this process."

But people making the same exact purchases as you aren’t necessarily paying the same exact prices as you. Companies have used this kind of information to effectively offer different prices to different groups of consumers. Using AI, companies can now answer questions like, “What is this person going to buy next? Rather, its bread and butter is providing companies with “all of the analytics and predictive scenarios” to figure out prices themselves. NEW YORK AP —John Deere says it will no longer sponsor “social or cultural awareness” events, becoming the latest major US company to distance itself from diversity and inclusion measures after being targeted by conservative backlash. The move from the company known on Wall Street as Deere & Co. arrives just weeks after rural retailer Tractor Supply ended an array of its corporate diversity and climate efforts. Both announcements came after backlash piled up online from conservative activists opposed to diversity, equity and inclusion efforts, sponsorship of LGBTQ+ Pride events and climate advocacy. “If it’s so polarizing that people just abandon it, then we all lost.”Legal attacks against companies’ diversity, equity and inclusion efforts have also drawn more attention following the Supreme Court’s 2023 ruling to end affirmative action in college admissions. That doesn’t mean companies will stop their DEI efforts entirely, she added, but they may have to change language or find new workarounds.

Hal Lawton, the chief executive of the Brentwood, Tennessee-based company, had said these initiatives “make great business sense for Tractor Supply.”But Tractor Supply has decided that all of those risks are now worth ignoring. By walking away from diversity and climate goals, Tractor Supply has become the latest corporate giant to retreat from progressive initiatives it once promoted, joining Bud Light, Target and others. Tractor Supply declined to comment on these statements. Tractor Supply’s customer base has historically been primarily older men, who lean Republican, but Tractor Supply has increasingly tried to draw Millennials and women, who tend to favor Democrats. Tractor Supply’s reversal could hurt it with these customers, who could be crucial as the company’s historic base ages out of the market.

New York CNN —Tractor Supply Company has eliminated its diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives as part of what the retail chain says is a push to distance itself from “nonbusiness activities” after conservative backlash from some of its customer base. “You can’t say you’re going to try to do at Tractor Supply what they do at the Apple headquarters in Cupertino, California — that’s definitely not going to work,” he said. “Tractor Supply Co is turning its back on their own neighbors with this shortsighted decision,” Eric Bloem, vice president of Programs and Corporate Advocacy at the Human Rights Campaign, told CNN in a statement Saturday. This is why the Tractor Supply — and most of the country’s biggest employers — have worked with us for years to create inclusive policies and practices. Those are the parts that business leaders aren’t thinking about as they are folding on DEI.”
