With one out of every five cars sold in the US this year being a compact SUV, an automaker's ability to compete in the segment is crucial to its success. Related VideoUnlike most brands, Mazda is taking on the competition with a two-headed monster consisting of its long-serving CX-5 and the recently introduced CX-50. For 2025, the Japanese automaker is adding a weapon to its arsenal with the introduction of the new CX-50 Hybrid. This will finally allow the brand to compete with established hybrid offerings like the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, Honda CR-V Hybrid, and Hyundai Tucson Hybrid.

Fewer new-car shoppers are considering EVs for their next vehicle, according to JD Power, with shoppers citing a lack of access to charging infrastructure as a main reason for ruling out EVs. Brands that have leaned into hybrids saw better sales results in February. "Hybrids are just rockin,'" Toyota Motor North America's sales chief David Christ told Automotive News after it released its sales results last week. The Toyota RAV4 SUV is one of the more popular hybrids on dealer lots. Among American brands, Ford notched a 31.5% increase in hybrid sales, as these vehicles lured more new customers to the Blue Oval.

UAW aims to organize 13 nonunion automakers
  + stars: | 2023-11-29 | by ( Chris Isidore | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
New York CNN —The United Auto Workers union says it has started an effort to organize workers at 13 non-union automakers with US factories. The union said there are about 150,000 employees at 36 nonunion auto plants operated by the companies it is targeting in this campaign. That is slightly more than the union’s representation at the three unionized automakers, which have about 145,000 UAW members between them. But if a union organizing campaign is successful, the union will be made up of workers from the company. The union has filed complaints accusing many of the automakers of unfair labor practices during those earlier organizing efforts.

Over the years these cars have gotten bigger and so has their cost to the climate, as carbon dioxide emissions “are almost directly proportional to fuel use” for gas-powered cars. Since then, he has owned several pure-electric cars, and currently owns both a Genesis GV60 electric SUV and a Tesla Model 3. Meanwhile, smaller vehicles, or sedans, have lost a lot of ground in the U.S. market over the past decade. But even the most efficient SUVs will be less efficient than sedans because SUVs weigh so much more. See more about AP’s climate initiative here.

She started investing early, and increased her rate of investment after learning about FIRE. And these accounts are separate from Pham's husband — together their estimated net worth is just under $2 million. And when it feels easier to just spend freely, tracking her net worth has helped keep her focused. "That gives us another safety net," Pham says, noting the pension as an added benefit to working in public service. "By then, we should have at least $2 million in net worth.

In fact, auto loan interest rates are the highest they’ve been since 2007, when the world was heading into a massive financial crisis. More than 70% of buyers of new large SUVs now have monthly payments over $1,000. Keep it shortPeople often try to reduce their monthly payments by taking out longer loans. Spreading the payments over more years can keep the monthly amount lower, but it means you’re paying more in interest. Leasing is another way to keep monthly payments down.

Some startups are convinced that EV charging needs a fundamental overhaul. Battery swapping and wireless EV charging could someday make owning an EV way more convenient. Quick, convenient, and cheap battery swapping will be key for getting everyone else on board, John de Souza, Ample's cofounder and president, told Insider. He added that even at highway speeds, Electreon's roads can keep a vehicle's battery topped up indefinitely. "We need all the solutions together in order to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles," he said.

An innovative wireless charging system embedded under the asphalt. To demonstrate the tech's potential, Electreon drove an electric Toyota for 1,206 miles straight on a test track that had its wireless charging coils embedded under the asphalt. The impressive feat shows how wireless charging can revolutionize EV ownership, Oren Ezer, Electreon's CEO and cofounder, told Insider. But Ezer thinks wireless electric roads could work wonders for personal EV ownership, too. The firm plans to open a mile-long stretch of electric road in Detroit.

Automakers and dealers have kept prices high and inventory low for years. Automakers and dealers are playing a game of chicken over how much a car should cost right now — and customers might come out the winners. Higher interest rates make everything more painfulMeanwhile, dealers are spending more to keep cars sitting. To make matters worse for dealers: Without discounts to ease rising interest rates, more customers are delaying their purchases and hoping to wait out the interest rates. If and when car companies start spending more on incentives, they are likely to target interest rates, Caldwell said.
Electric cars could cost the same as gas-powered ones as early as the mid-2020s. That's only if shoppers go small, according to new analysis from the International Energy Agency. It's as long as shoppers buy small, according to the International Energy Agency's latest global EV outlook. Still, the average new EV cost $58,940 in March, according to Kelley Blue Book, while the average new gas-powered car went for $48,008. Bigger battery-powered vehicles have batteries that are two- to three-times larger than small cars, according to the IEA, which requires more critical minerals that are costly.

Emergency start devices sold online starting at $1,600 can hack into a car through its wire network. The easiest access to car wires is through the headlights, car security experts say. "Normally, the wake-up message happens when you've pressed your car key. The hacking device sends a message to the car's front network — a car has many networks for logistic reasons — pretending to be the key. To study the hacking system, Tindell and Tabor purchased a similar hacking device online and reverse-engineered it.

A Toyota RAV4 Prime electric car is recharged October 3, 2022 at a charging station at the town hall in Charlotte, Vermont. Toyota Motor Corp aims to introduce 10 new battery electric vehicle models by 2026, a senior executive said on Friday, as the Japanese automaker looks to catch up in electric vehicles. Toyota will also set up a new, specialised unit to focus on battery EVs and is targeting annual production of 1.5 million battery-powered cars by 2026, Hiroki Nakajima, the company's chief technology officer, said at a briefing. The automaker, the world's largest by sales, has pushed back against criticism it has been too slow to embrace battery-powered vehicles. Toyota argues that a mix of options - including gasoline-electric hybrids, makes more sense for its global customer base.
But Americans love SUVs and trucks, and they're going to have to pay for them in the near term. A lot of prospective EV buyers just haven't yet found the types of EVs they're looking for. They don't necessarily need more luxury electric sedans — they want the trucks and SUVs they're used to. A recent study found most car-buyers don't want to spend more than $50,000 to go EV, but they also want electric trucks and SUVs that inherently cost more. Bigger vehicles are often just more expensive, largely because they require bigger batteries — the most expensive part of these new EVs.

The US is losing tech workers to other countries. And so, many tech workers are opting to move and work there instead of the US. Plus, many of these countries are making their immigration systems easier for tech workers. My teammates Emilia David and Paayal Zaveri break down how the US is on the brink of losing an entire generation of tech workers. And it showed that Boomers and Gen Z both love many of the same cars, including the Toyota RAV4.

He hadn’t gotten far when his car got stuck in one of the deadliest blizzards in the history of the city. Mr. Sharifu, a 26-year-old refugee from Congo, sat in his Toyota RAV4 with a dwindling supply of gas in his tank and called a friend to explain his plight, said Erieckson Kiza, a leader in the Congolese community. Mr. Sharifu, clad only in a thin tracksuit, told the friend he feared he would freeze when his gas ran out and the heat cut off. Waiting at home for his return was his wife who was nine months pregnant.
