Over three years after the accidental on-set death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, Alec Baldwin's Western film “Rust” received a polite response during its controversial premiere Wednesday at the EnergaCamerimage festival in Toruń, Poland. The audience clapped through the film’s closing credits, strengthening their applause when a dedication to Hutchins appeared. The premiere opened with Camerimage director Marek Żydowicz asking the audience to stand for a moment of silence for Hutchins. Cinematographer Rachel Mason, Hutchins’ friend who made a documentary about the completion of the film, then made an emotional speech. Additionally, AFI launched the Halyna Hutchins Memorial Scholarship Fund.

The striking 3D reconstruction of Zosia, as locals nicknamed her, sheds light on the human found in the grisly grave. Archaeologist Dariusz Poliński, who led the team that unearthed Zosia’s remains, said it was a “mind-blowing” moment when he saw the reconstruction by Swedish forensic artist Oscar Nilsson for the first time. During the course of the 17th century, Poland and Sweden fought a series of wars, so Zosia could have been an outsider within her community. “Maybe because of some misfortune or the death of somebody else, they decided to open the grave,” Poliński suggested. A year after discovering Zosia’s grave, the same team found a child’s remains buried in an unusual way.

Nicolaus Copernicus University / Oscar Nilsson via ReutersZosia, as she was named by locals, was found in 2022 by a team of archaeologists from Torun’s Nicolaus Copernicus University. The sickle, the padlock and certain types of wood found at the grave site were all believed at the time to hold magical properties protecting against vampires, according to the Nicolaus Copernicus team. Among the other bodies found at the site was a “vampire” child, buried face down and similarly padlocked at the foot. “It’s emotional to watch a face coming back from the dead, especially when you know the story about this young girl,” Nilsson says. Nilsson said he wanted to bring Zosia back “as a human, and not as this monster that she is buried as.”

The film “Rust” will make its world premiere next month, three years after the set shooting that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and blanketed the production in scandal and legal troubles. The Western drama starring and produced by Alec Baldwin will make its world premiere at the Camerimage Festival which takes place Nov. 16 to 23 in Toruń, Poland. Production was halted as Baldwin and the film’s armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, became the subject of legal action. In one account, from 1674, a dead man rose from his tomb to assault his relatives; when his grave was opened, the corpse was unnaturally preserved and bore traces of fresh blood. In 1746, a Benedictine monk named Antoine Augustin Calmet published a popular treatise that sought, among other things, to distinguish real revenants from frauds. Four centuries later, archaeologists in Europe have discovered the first physical evidence of a suspected child revenant. “The padlock would have been locked to the big toe,” Dariusz Poliński, the lead archaeologist on the study, said through a translator. Sometime after burial, the grave was desecrated and all the bones removed except those of the lower legs.
