The gold and currency had just arrived on an Air Canada flight from Zurich, Switzerland. At least two former Air Canada employees allegedly helped in the audacious theft, police say. “They needed people inside Air Canada to facilitate this theft,” Detective Sgt. “This was the largest gold heist in Canadian history, reportedly, it’s the sixth largest in world crime history,” said Deputy Police Chief Nick Milinovich. “I don’t think I ever imagined they’d have to deal with the largest gold heist in Canadian history, it’s almost out of an Ocean’s Eleven movie or a CSI.

CNN —An air cargo container carrying more than $15 million in gold and other valuables disappeared from Toronto’s Pearson International Airport Monday, and police are still trying to find out who is behind the high-value heist. The aircraft was unloaded and cargo was taken to a holding facility early Monday evening, “as per normal procedure,” said Stephen Duivesteyn of Peel Regional Police at a Thursday news conference at the airport. Then, “this high-value container was removed by illegal means from the holding facility,” he said. Police would not say whether security cameras captured the heist, which airline company transported the container or who owns the container. “What I can say is that the container contained a high-value shipment, it did contain gold but was not exclusive to gold and contained other items of monetary value,” said Duivesteyn, estimating the contents are worth about $15 million ($20 million Canadian dollars).

A blast of Arctic air will also plunge much of the country into bitter and, in some cases, dangerous cold, forecasters say. In some parts of this area, the wind chill could reach as low as minus 70 degrees, according to the Weather Service. Brief bursts of moderate to heavy snow lasting an hour or two are likely to occur immediately behind the Arctic front. Strong southerly winds, combined with the new moon-tide cycle, could also bring coastal flooding from northern New Jersey to northeast Massachusetts, the Weather Service said. Meteorologists warned local residents that this is not a normal lake effect event with a narrow band of heavy snow.
