Steve Jobs had apparently had mixed feelings about Apple entering the TV market before his death. Apple cofounder Steve Jobs reportedly made it clear before he died that Apple wouldn't pursue its own television set, but the company may now be revisiting the idea over a decade later. Jobs reportedly told biographer Walter Isaacson that he'd "finally cracked" how to make TVs simpler to use. In 2014, writer and former Apple beat reporter Yukari Iwatani Kane wrote in her book, "Haunted Empire: Apple After Steve Jobs," that Jobs told top Apple employees in 2010 that the company wouldn't be making a TV set. Apple's services business, which includes Apple TV+ subscriptions, has boomed in recent quarters.

Read previewAfter OpenAI unveiled its latest ChatGPT iteration, one tech executive is probably super jealous: Apple's Tim Cook. as you do with Apple's assistant. The comparisons to the female voice assistant from the movie "Her" were so obvious even OpenAI CEO Sam Altman tweeted about it. OpenAI clearly has made a voice assistant chatbot that is way more advanced than Siri currently is, and Tim Cook must be sweating a little. But Apple still has a big advantage whenever it updates Siri with an AI makeover: It's already the voice assistant on your iPhone — and that's huge.

Apple still hasn't responded to Spotify's request to update its EU app with price information. Spotify claims the silence is Apple's way of "avoiding" compliance with the DMA, per The Verge. The future for Apple's Vision Pro looks promising despite Wall Street's muted enthusiasm. Wall Street doesn't expect the Vision Pro to drive a ton of revenue at first though. Bank of America estimates the Vision Pro could add 46 cents per share to earnings-per-share (EPS) within the next five years. "We tested the Vision Pro and walked away positively from the overall extremely unique and immersive experience," BofA analysts wrote in a Monday research note. While it'll take time, the Vision Pro has the potential to boost sales and earnings in the future.

Apple CEO Tim Cook holds a new iPhone 15 Pro during the Wonderlust project launch event at the company's headquarters in Cupertino, California, Sept. 12, 2023. Kuo wrote that Apple's weekly shipments in China have dropped by 30% to 40% from a year earlier in recent weeks, "and this downward trend is expected to continue." "Apple may have the most significant decline among the major global mobile phone brands in 2024," Kuo wrote. Samsung has upped shipments of its new Galaxy S24 series this year by 5% to 10% as it sees "higher-than-expected" demand thanks to its AI-powered features, Kuo wrote. Apple 's Vision Pro quickly sold out after preorders for it opened Friday, but early signs could mean demand is waning, according to top Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of TF International Securities. He estimated that Apple sold 160,000 to 180,000 Vision Pro units over the weekend. "Popular iPhone models also sell out immediately upon pre-order, and shipping times typically increase to several weeks within hours," Kuo wrote. Kuo wrote in his blog that it "should not be challenging" for Apple to ship 500,000 Vision Pro units in total this year. "Right now, Vision Pro is still a very niche product," Kuo wrote.

The ruling issued Wednesday by the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington comes three weeks after it blocked the ban. Apple is still trying to persuade the federal appeals court to overturn the ITC's ruling, but Wednesday's decision means the company is no longer insulated from the U.S. sales ban. The Cupertino, California, company also could negotiate a settlement with Masimo that would clear the way for it to continue selling the Apple Watch models with the blood-oxygen sensor. Having to pull its two top Apple Watches from the U.S. would put a small dent in the company's annual sales of $383 billion. Although the company doesn't disclose the volume of Apple Watch sales, analyst estimate the product accounts for about $18 billion in annual revenue.

For years, Google watched with increasing concern as Apple improved its search technology, not knowing whether its longtime partner and sometimes competitor would eventually build its own search engine. Those fears ratcheted up in 2021, when Google paid Apple around $18 billion to keep Google’s search engine the default selection on iPhones, according to two people with knowledge of the partnership, who were not authorized to discuss it publicly. The same year, Apple’s iPhone search tool, Spotlight, began showing users richer web results like those they could have found on Google. Google quietly planned to put a lid on Apple’s search ambitions. Google’s anti-Apple plan illustrated the importance that its executives placed on maintaining dominance in the search business.

Tim Cook, chief executive officer of Apple Inc., during an event at Apple Park campus in Cupertino, California, US, on Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2023. Top Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said Wednesday that shipments for the company's MacBook computers will decline around 30% year over year, to 17 million units, during 2023. He said demand for the new 15-inch MacBook Air has slipped "significantly" in the wake of the back-to-school shopping period, and that MacBook shipments during Apple's fourth quarter will be lower than they have been in years past. Apple's fourth quarter has historically been important for the company as consumers purchase devices as part of their holiday shopping. He said shipments of the 15-inch MacBook Air are projected to be down more than 20% this year.

Google counters that it dominates the market because its search engine is better than the competition – a position that Apple’s Cue supported in his testimony Tuesday. Google also argues that users can, in any event, switch to other search engines with a couple of clicks. And last week, the founder of search engine DuckDuckGo, which has about 2.5% of the search market, testified that his company struggled to compete because of Google's revenue-sharing agreements with Apple and other companies. If he decides Google broke the law, another trial will determine how to rein in Google's market power. The Mountain View, California-based company could be stopped from paying Apple and other companies to make Google the default search engine.

Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of services, testified in Washington that Google’s placement as the default search option on the Safari browser across Apple devices was motivated by quality. “I didn’t think at the time, or today, that there was anybody out there who is anywhere near as good as Google at searching,” said Mr. Cue, who was called to testify by the Justice Department. “Certainly there wasn’t a valid alternative.”The Justice Department has accused Google of illegally locking in its monopoly through deals to make its search option the default on Apple, Samsung, Firefox and other platforms. Those partnerships squashed competitors that struggled to get their products in front of consumers, the Justice Department argues.

Apple loses London appeal in 4G patent dispute with Optis
  + stars: | 2023-07-04 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
LONDON, July 4 (Reuters) - Apple Inc (AAPL.O) infringed two telecommunications patents used in devices including iPhones and iPads, London's Court of Appeal ruled on Tuesday, dismissing the tech giant's appeal in a long-running dispute with a U.S. patent holder. Texas-based Optis Cellular Technology LLC sued Apple in 2019 over its use of patents which Optis says are essential to certain technological standards, such as 4G. London's High Court ruled last year that two of Optis' 4G patents were so-called standard essential patents and that Apple had infringed them. Apple appealed against that decision in May, arguing that the two patents in issue were not essential to 4G standards and that it had not infringed the patents. Apple and Optis did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Ming-Chi Kuo, a renowned Apple analyst, said in a blog post Tuesday that he predicts that a bigger screen and a periscope camera will be features of the iPhone 16 Pro. Kuo said that the iPhone 16 Pro's display will be "slightly larger" than the screens on the current iPhone 14 Pro and the upcoming iPhone 15 Pro. A periscope camera offers improved zoom capabilities, and Kuo said he expects the iPhone 16 Pro and the even larger iPhone 16 Pro Max to have them. Kuo's comments echo another industry analyst, Ross Young, who said that the iPhone 16 Pro and the iPhone 16 Pro Max will get bigger screens. When another user guessed that the iPhone 16 Pro would increase from 6.1 to 6.4 inches, and the iPhone 16 Pro Max would increase from 6.7 to 6.9 inches, Young replied "close."
