CAMDEN, Maine — A Republican lawmaker in Maine accused of choking his wife last month won re-election by a single vote after a Thursday recount. According to a police affidavit obtained by WCSH, Lanigan is accused of choking his wife after she confronted him about an alleged affair. His race against Democratic challenger Patty Kidder for a state House seat representing part of Southern Maine initially ended in an apparent tie. But prosecutors are continuing to pursue the case, saying domestic violence victims sometimes recant under pressure from abusers, according to WCSH. Five seats in the state House have yet to be decided, pending recounts.

The man, a Norwegian citizen in his 20s, was arrested at his home on Wednesday, police said. “The accused man was an employee, a security guard, at the U.S. embassy in Oslo,” Thomas Blom, a lawyer for the security police service PST, told reporters. The man was cooperating and talking to officers, Blom said, adding that a “large” amount of digital material had been confiscated. Senate Republicans offered mixed responses Thursday to President-elect Donald Trump's announcement that he will nominate Pete Hegseth, a Fox News personality accused of sexual assault, to lead the Defense Department following the release of a police report concerning sexual assault allegations against him. Some senators defended Trump's pick, while others voiced some trepidation, and a senator told NBC News "I don't care" when approached about a police report released Wednesday tied to an allegation of sexual assault against Hegseth in 2017.
