If Harris wins the election in November, Trump’s Jan. 6 case — though weakened by the Supreme Court — will continue to move toward trial. She is also likely to avoid much discussion of Trump’s handling of classified documents: While a Trump-appointed federal judge dismissed a federal case involving his alleged mishandling of classified documents, the Justice Department has appealed and the case could ultimately survive. While those rules are binding only on the Justice Department, part of Harris’ pitch to voters is that she would respect the lines between the Justice Department and the White House that have existed for decades, since the Watergate scandal. During the Biden administration, the Justice Department appointed another special counsel, a former Trump appointee, who secured the conviction of Biden’s son Hunter Biden on gun charges.

With only days to consider a range of contenders, Ms. Harris and her team were inundated with unsolicited advice — much of it public — about whom she should pick. Andy Beshear of Kentucky, who has also been vetted by the Harris team, appeared at a Harris campaign fund-raiser in Chicago. Mr. Biden was at home in Wilmington, Del., over the weekend while Ms. Harris interviewed prospective running mates in Washington. A White House spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment about whether he had spoken to Ms. Harris as she finished her deliberations. CNN —Kamala Harris is in the thick of choosing a vice presidential running mate, with her campaign eying an announcement in the coming days that would be immediately followed by a joint tour of a series of battleground states. Harris has not yet conducted formal interviews with the top contenders, one source familiar told CNN. As is typical in vice presidential searches, the Harris campaign has been intently focused on who could help strengthen the Harris ticket’s electoral chances. CNN —Vice President Kamala Harris is less than two weeks away from naming her own running mate. Democrats close to the process say the roster of leading contenders being vetted still includes North Carolina Gov. A new CNN poll conducted by SSRS showed no clear leader in a matchup between Harris and Trump. The former president holds 49% support among registered voters nationwide to Harris’ 46%, a finding within the survey’s margin of sampling error. The party has said its goal is to nominate its presidential and vice presidential candidates by August 7.
