CNN —The tragic arc of Amy Winehouse’s brief life and nova-like career creates built-in problems for a biography of the singer, which doesn’t dampen the knockout performance by Marisa Abela in “Back to Black,” capturing the talent, rage and self-destructiveness that defined her. Thin as biopics go, the power of Abela’s portrayal elevates the film, providing a poignance and strength that’s the clearest motivation to go, go, go. Then again, as constructed here, the two went hand in hand, with the lyrics to songs like “Back to Black” and “Rehab” directly addressing her addictions to her relationship with Blake and alcohol. In terms of capturing what animated Winehouse, the blinding star power that Abela emits here ultimately justifies the exercise. “Back to Black” premieres May 17 in US theaters.

It's Taylor Swift's world, and she just allows us to live in it. “Midnights” earned Swift her fourth career Grammy for album of the year on Sunday, an achievement no one can match. It breaks a tie with Frank Sinatra, Paul Simon and Stevie Wonder, who each won the honor three times. Swift was the last example of an action-packed show where women earned the biggest honors and had the majority of the most memorable performances. There was a brief pause before SZA accepted an award for best R&B song, since she was changing backstage.

White jazz artists were antiracists before the term was inventedMany of the tributes to Bennett mentioned his disdain for bigotry. Many White jazz artists were antiracists, long before the word was invented. Frank Sinatra, Bennett’s musical mentor, recorded with and relentlessly championed Black jazz artists like Ella Fitzgerald and Count Basie. He hired a Black jazz bassist, Eugene Wright, and refused to play in segregated venues. There are countless photos of a beaming Bennett hanging out with Black jazz artists.

Tony Bennett Used His Celebrity to Promote Civil Rights
  + stars: | 2023-07-23 | by ( Julia Jacobs | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
In explaining the roots of his commitment to civil rights, Tony Bennett often told a story from his Army days, when he brought a Black soldier as his guest to Thanksgiving dinner, prompting a furious reprimand and a demotion. It was 1945, three years before the end of segregation in the U.S. military, and Bennett, who had been drafted into World War II shortly after he had turned 18, happened to run into a high school friend and fellow serviceman in occupied Germany. As he brought the friend, Frank Smith, to the holiday meal in the white servicemen’s mess hall, an officer intercepted them in a rage, Bennett recalled in his 1998 autobiography. “It was actually more acceptable to fraternize with the German troops than it was to be friendly with a fellow Black American soldier!” Bennett recalled in the book, “The Good Life.”Bennett recalled that in that moment, the officer took out a razor blade and cut the corporal stripes from his uniform, spitting on them and throwing them to the floor. He was then assigned to dig up the bodies of soldiers in mass graves so that they could be reburied with more dignity.

In the 1970s, Tony Bennett’s career and life were in disarray. He was performing mostly in Las Vegas, a declining city that glued him to a bygone era. His music was out of vogue — his last Top 40 single had been in 1965. The rebirth of Mr. Bennett, who died on Friday, ensured that he would remain one of the most revered singers of American popular music for generations to come. Mr. Bennett managed a career resurgence in the late 1980s and ’90s without changing much about his music.

US singer Tony Bennett (Anthony Dominick Benedetto) performs on stage during an invitation only concert at the newly opened Encore Boston Harbor Casino in Everett, Massachusetts on August 8, 2019. "No country has given the world such great music," Bennett said in a 2015 interview with Downbeat Magazine. The evening's performance resulted in the album, "Tony Bennett: MTV Unplugged," which won two Grammys, including album of the year. Bennett would win Grammys for his tributes to female vocalists ("Here's to the Ladies"), Billie Holiday ("Tony Bennett on Holiday"), and Duke Ellington ("Bennett Sings Ellington — Hot & Cool"). He also won two Emmy Awards — for "Tony Bennett Live By Request: A Valentine Special" (1996) and "Tony Bennett: An American Classic" (2007).

The Amiable, Unswerving Tony Bennett

Has there ever been a more purely likable pop figure than Tony Bennett? Throughout a career that began in the 1940s, Bennett, who died on Friday at 96, maintained one mission, amiably and unswervingly. Instead, he let listeners — and, in recent decades, much younger duet partners — come to him, generation after generation. Bennett sang vintage pop standards, the pre-rock canon sometimes called the Great American Songbook. He was always unplugged — a simple fact that cannily recharged his career when he played “MTV Unplugged” in 1994.

There were the famous New York places where he was celebrated, like the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where his 75th birthday party wasn’t referred to as a birthday party. There were the canvases he painted in every Manhattanite’s backyard. And there were the New York stages he appeared on, from the Paramount Theater when he was in his 20s to Carnegie Hall in his 30s to Radio City Music Hall in his 90s. Tony Bennett may have become famous for “I Left My Heart in San Francisco,” but his own heart was unquestionably a New Yorker’s. He had that New York cool, decade after decade — the kid from Astoria, Queens, who made a go of it in Manhattan.

In August 2021, while battling Alzheimer’s disease, Bennett, who died on Friday at 96, made his final public appearance on that very same stage, again with Lady Gaga. A poignant “60 Minutes” segment captured Bennett’s struggles in rehearsals but his ultimate triumph when he took the stage. He sang with more eclectic and, in some cases, even younger musicians on his series of “Duets” albums, from 2006 to 2012. Gaga satisfied Bennett’s desire to stay active and involved with a younger generation of musicians, and her professional stability made her into the most committed of his duet partners. I felt dead,” Gaga said of the time before “Cheek to Cheek.” “And then I spent a lot of time with Tony.

Tony Bennett’s 10 Essential Songs

When Anthony Dominick Benedetto was growing up in Astoria, Queens, during the Depression, his parents couldn’t afford to pay for the singing lessons he wanted. Anthony Benedetto later took the advice of the comedian Bob Hope and adopted the more Americanized stage name Tony Bennett. Voice lessons, however long delayed, were important to his development. After he served in World War II, Bennett studied, thanks to the G.I. In 1965, Frank Sinatra told Life magazine, “For my money, Tony Bennett is the best singer in the business.” He held on to that distinction for decades to follow.
