"What's driving price action is undoubtedly the election," Nic Puckrin, CEO and co-founder at crypto education site Coin Bureau, said of the November outlook. BTC.CM= YTD mountain Bitcoin YTD Republican nominee former President Donald Trump has courted the crypto industry this year, presenting himself as the pro-crypto candidate . October and November are historically strong months for bitcoin, finishing higher in seven of the past 11 Novembers. "Volatility has decreased for both gold and bitcoin as traders look forward to the [election] results, although both assets have benefited from positive underlying fundamentals incrementally driving the price up." "The main danger we foresee would be temporary angst around election results affecting sentiment and holding back further development of the ecosystem," Chung added.

Bitcoin investors are grappling with a demand dearth that has pushed the cryptocurrency into bear market territory at times. (In the first quarter, bitcoin ETFs bought about 9,000 BTC daily on average, following their January launch.) In the fourth quarters of 2012, 2016, and 2020 — the previous Bitcoin halving years — bitcoin prices rose by 9%, 59%, and 171%, respectively. The most recent halving — the supply cutting event that takes place every four years — happened this April. Bitcoin slid 10.25% for its worst month since April, while ether dropped 23.66% in its third monthly drawdown and worst month since June 2022. "It's not a pretty picture across the crypto landscape at the moment," said Rob Ginsberg, chart analyst at Wolfe Research. "Bitcoin is still stuck in a descending trading range as price gradually deteriorates off the March high. Historically, September is the worst month for bitcoin — and other markets too, like U.S. stocks. Bitcoin has been stuck in a range between $50,000 and $70,000 since April and is likely to stay there for another a month at least.

The bitcoin halving is set to take place in the next few days, which will cut miners' main stream of revenue in half. "We believe a bitcoin price above $60,000-$65,000 means the halving is de-risked for nearly all public miners," Needham analyst John Todaro wrote in a note to clients on Tuesday. It currently costs miners between $36,000 and $52,700 to mine a single bitcoin, Todaro said. Miners offer amplified exposure to bitcoin's price action, which has been more volatile since the launch of bitcoin ETFs introduced more leverage to the market. "That's propelled bitcoin to a threshold where the miners are really generating healthy economics," said Colonnese.

"Bitcoin reclaiming its all-time high yet again shows it is never going away," said Alex Thorn, head of research at Galaxy Digital. Catalysts driving the surge in the cryptocurrency include the U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs that started trading earlier this year, along with the tightening bitcoin supply ahead of the late April "halving." "The odds have always been against bitcoin," Thorn said, citing naysayers who have referred to it as "a bubble" and compared it to the "tulip mania" in Holland during the 1600s. "Retail interest is oftentimes momentum driven, and all-time high levels are a pivotal momentum driver for even more investment," he told CNBC. Nevertheless, U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs have brought legitimacy to it and been hugely popular, with BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) passing $10 billion in assets under management last week.

Bitcoin pushed higher to end the week as investors took some comfort in the idea that outflows from the Grayscale Bitcoin ETF (GBTC) could be starting to taper off. It's on pace, however, to post a nearly 10% decline for the week. If premarket gains hold, Coinbase is is on pace to end the week up 1% for the week. It would mark for its first positive week in five. Bitcoin miner Riot Platforms is set to rise 9% this week and also post its first positive week in five.

Coinbase shares have even further to climb despite already being up 13% since the start of December and the low appetite for crypto coming from retail investors, according to Needham. Needham raised its price target on Coinbase on Tuesday to $160 from $120, implying about 13% upside from its closing price Monday. Meanwhile, although retail investors' appetite for crypto has improved since bottoming a year ago after the collapse of FTX, interest is generally low, according to Needham. "Retail crypto engagement is considerably lower than in prior years and despite the recent price gains, has been fairly muted," Todaro said. Dominance tends to rise in bear markets as investors rotate into the safety of bitcoin compared to other crypto coins .

But the Bitcoin halving is expected in the spring and it will likely reduce companies' revenue. The Bitcoin halving event is highly anticipated event by crypto investors because it historically has set the stage for new bull runs. It takes place every four years when the reward for mining bitcoin – which makes up a significant portion of mining companies' revenue – is cut in half. Marathon famously has the highest energy costs and lowest margins, while Riot has relatively low power costs but shares are expensive. Lower revenue, higher costs Generally, the mining stocks benefit from bitcoin price increases because those translate into higher mining revenue for the company.

High interest rates have not been bitcoin's friend in the past, and the benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury yield recently reaching new generational highs comes at an especially inconvenient time for the cryptocurrency. "We continue to see high yields as a negative for bitcoin and in particular crypto more broadly," said Needham analyst John Todaro. The central bank chief also left the door open for higher interest rates , saying he doesn't think levels are currently too high. In the past, high yields have put pressure on crypto, giving investors fewer reasons to bet on high-risk assets such as bitcoin in the face of high yield, low risk assets like government bonds. Callie Cox, an analyst at the investment company eToro, said bitcoin could actually continue to do well — partly as a result of high interest rates.

The eventual debut of a spot bitcoin ETF, one of crypto's biggest positive catalysts, also lost some steam this week, he added. Thursday's judgment was only a partial win for Ripple, but significant nonetheless for both the company and the wider crypto market. Coinbase shares rallied more than 24% the day of the ruling on optimism that it might prevail in its own battle with the SEC. Regulators in June sued Coinbase, alleging it was operating as a broker, an exchange and a clearinghouse for unregistered securities – and named 13 such securities. "In our view, [the] decision in the Ripple case helps tip the scale even more toward a favorable outcome for Coinbase." Needham has a buy rating on Coinbase and on Friday raised its price target to $120 from $70.

While the possibilities are still coming into focus, Needham sees at least one near-term opportunity for investors, and a stock to play it. In the near term, the infrastructure level is the place for investors, and Applied Digital offers an interesting opportunity, according to the firm. "We have been excited about Applied Digital, which is a bitcoin mining hosting provider that recently entered into hosting high performance compute (HPC) and AI," Needham analyst John Todaro told CNBC by email. "Given the similar power density requirements between bitcoin mining and hosting AI applications, we believe there is an attractive opportunity for Applied Digital and potentially other mining hosting providers to enter this space." It's still early days for both crypto and AI individually, although the AI hype may have better longevity from having been around for longer.

Reuters also asked representatives of the local Binance units and affiliates about their relationship with the main Binance exchange. Nevertheless, crypto trading services such as those offered by Coinbase , SoFi and Robinhood are likely to suffer a lull nevertheless as retail and institutional investors alike exit the market or try and move past their fear of another upheaval. "We are updating our model to reflect a 'lower for longer' assumption, particularly as it pertains to retail trading," Budish said. SoFi in a unique position This week, Democratic senators urged regulators to look into SoFi's trading activity as Washington attempts contemplates acting on FTX's spectacular collapse. SoFi has said its crypto revenue exposure is immaterial, it's compliant with regulators, doesn't do any crypto lending and had no exposure to FTX. However, it's possible that SOFI may find itself more heavily regulated with potential for incremental capital and liquidity requirements."
Active user jump Where analysts see the potential for optimism in Coinbase's report is in its reported active monthly users. While active monthly users dipped in the quarter to 8.5 million from 9 million, the company handily beat Wall Street's expectations of 7.84 million monthly active users. Budish also lowered his price target after management's guidance but maintained his equal weight rating on the Coinbase. The result was that lower trading volume drove Coinbase trading revenue to the lowest level since becoming a public company." Cowen has an outperform rating on shares of Coinbase and a $75 price target, albeit down from an earlier $85.
