The price increase was approved Saturday at a National Council meeting, where 900 delegates were present to discuss the Girl Scouts’ future. They voted to hike dues to $45 for the 2026 membership year and again to $65 in 2027. Dues will remain at $25 for 2025, which has been the same price for the program for eight years. Membership dues are the Girl Scout’s largest source of revenue, generating $38 million in 2023 from its nearly 2 million total members. “It’s an enormous increase,” said Sally Bertram, a 30-year troop leader with the Girl Scouts of Western Ohio.

CNN —The Girl Scouts of the USA plans to raise prices, but not for their famous cookies. Membership dues are the Girl Scout’s largest source of revenue, generating $38 million in 2023 from its nearly 2 million total members. You are going to run yourselves out of business.”Bertram was a Girl Scout herself, just like every girl in her family. Part of the problem is that Girl Scout membership has fallen in recent years, leadership said in a video to members in September. GSUSA will continue to provide financial aid to “reduce barriers” to any girl who wants to be a Girl Scout, a spokesperson said.

During a virtual roundtable, we asked Business Insider's Workforce Innovation board to tell us how AI would transform companies over the next year. How will the most innovative companies be transformed by AI over the next 12 months? Last year, we had an AI challenge across the company, and a huge percentage of our employees participated. There are a lot of different points of view on what AI will and will not do and how quickly. And that the promise we think AI is going to deliver will probably take longer than we think to come to fruition.

CNN —Hackers targeted a wastewater treatment plant in Indiana on Friday evening, prompting plant managers to send maintenance personnel to investigate the suspicious activity, a local official told CNN. A Russia-linked hacking group claimed responsibility. The same group claimed credit for a string of hacking incidents against water facilities in Texas earlier this year. On Saturday, Russian-speaking hackers posted a video to social media claiming credit for a cyberattack on a TMU wastewater treatment plant. It’s the latest apparent effort by a group of Russian-speaking hackers to target water facilities in small American towns.

I think a lot of times, companies start by immediately bringing in diverse talent. To be able to fill all these future roles — even with AI — you're going to have to tap into diverse talent. I can't just show up at Georgia Tech and expect all the diverse talent to want to come to my organization. A false narrative is the talent just isn't there, or you're too small to attract the talent. Two weeks ago at the Metropolitan Opera, a superb cast in “La Forza del Destino” outshone a new, somewhat confused staging by Mariusz Trelinski. And now, Bartlett Sher’s handsome yet unconvincing 2016 production of Gounod’s “Roméo et Juliette” has returned to the house with a pair of singers in splendid form. Sher’s staging situates the action on a raised platform surrounded by stone facades and colonnades. Beautifully lit by Jennifer Tipton and costumed by Catherine Zuber, the production runs out of ideas quickly. But that doesn’t really matter when you have singers on the order of Nadine Sierra and Benjamin Bernheim in the title roles.

A federal judge on Friday allowed the Biden administration to keep in place a program that officials have used to give temporary legal status to some citizens of Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela. The decision is a notable victory for the White House, which has faced criticism on immigration policy and has used the temporary status program to discourage people from some of the region’s most troubled countries from illegally crossing the southern U.S. border. Texas and other Republican-led states had sued the Biden administration to block the program. But Judge Drew B. Tipton of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas sided with the administration, which considered the program vital to border management. The number of unlawful crossings by nationals from three of the countries in the program has declined, even as the overall number of migrant crossings has continued at historically high levels.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Alabama lawmakers facing public pressure to restart in vitro fertilization services in the state advanced legislation to shield providers from the fallout of a court ruling that equated frozen embryos to children. Committees in the state Senate and House on Tuesday approved identical bills that would protect providers from lawsuits and criminal prosecution for the “damage or death of an embryo” during IVF services. The state's three major IVF providers paused services after the Alabama Supreme Court's ruling last month because of the sweeping liability concerns it raised. The court decision received immediate backlash as groups across the country raised concerns about a ruling recognizing embryos as children. The American Society for Reproductive Medicine, a group representing IVF providers across the country, said the legislation does not go far enough.

The near-absence of laws criminalizing the practice of fertility fraud until recently means no doctors have yet been criminally charged for the behavior. In 2019, Indiana became the second state, more than 20 years after California, to pass a statute making fertility fraud a felony. He added some of his biological children have “expressed gratitude for their existence” to him and even sent him photos of their own children. Cline’s case spurred lawmakers to pass legislation that outlawed fertility fraud but wasn’t retroactive, meaning he was never prosecuted for it. “In fertility fraud, no parent is saying that – no parent is saying I would have gotten an abortion,” she said.

While many in the world of cocktails are familiar with Tom Bullock, renowned for his juleps and long considered the first African American bartender to publish a cocktail manual, fewer know the work of Atholene Peyton, a home economics teacher whose 1906 “Peytonia Cook Book” predated Bullock’s by a decade. Peyton’s story is just one told in Toni Tipton-Martin’s new book, “Juke Joints, Jazz Clubs and Juice: Cocktails From Two Centuries of African American Cookbooks,” a chronicle of the ways in which Black people contributed to American cocktail culture. “This is really a work of investigative journalism. It’s not just a book of cocktails,” said Ms. Tipton-Martin, a James Beard award-winning author of several cookbooks and the editor of Cook’s Country magazine, who pored through centuries’ worth of published recipes for her new work. The book is a continuation of her 2015 book, “The Jemima Code: Two Centuries of African American Cookbooks,” which credited Black women for much of the country’s culinary history, and her 2019 follow-up, “Jubilee: Recipes From Two Centuries of African American Cooking.”

You've probably heard about the growth mindset — the idea that constant, incremental improvement can lead to achievement and success. It's also the key to understanding why the growth mindset works and when to lean into it, researchers say. Several studies on school-age children, for example, found that a growth mindset resulted in better grades for kids from financially well-off families than those from poorer backgrounds. A growth mindset is "a necessary but insufficient condition for learning," says Tipton. When a growth mindset is most effective, and how to use it wisely

Tipton, an appointee of Republican former President Donald Trump, blocked the Biden administration from enforcing the $15 minimum wage in Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi, states that last year filed a lawsuit challenging the executive order. The minimum wage under federal law is $7.25 an hour, though many states set higher minimums. Four states and several cities have a minimum wage of at least $15. Only Congress can set minimum wages and adopt other employment policies unless it specifically grants those powers to federal agencies, Tipton wrote. In January, a federal judge in Arizona dismissed a similar challenge to Biden's executive order by five other Republican-led states.

NO CANCELLATIONS YETDemand for travel has soared again this summer as tourists leave behind years of pandemic restrictions, and travel companies say the heat hasn't caused many cancellations - yet. Stories of tourists being airlifted off Italian beaches or ferried away in ambulances from Athens' Acropolis have flooded European media in recent weeks. Italy's Environment Ministry warned in a report this year that foreign tourists would in future travel more in the spring and autumn and choose cooler destinations. Greek authorities closed Athens' ancient Acropolis during the hottest part of the day on Friday to protect tourists. In Spain, high vacation demand is expected in coastal destinations in the north of the country and on Spanish tourist islands, where summer temperatures tend to be cooler, according to a report from national tourism association Exceltur.

The Republican attorneys general of Texas and Louisiana filed suit to challenge Biden's policy but the justices determined that the two states lacked the legal standing to bring the case. The guidelines reflected Biden's recalibration of U.S. immigration policy after the hardline approach taken by his Republican predecessor Donald Trump, who sought to broaden the range of immigrants subject to arrest and removal. Biden's policy prioritized apprehending and deporting non-U.S. citizens who pose a threat to national security, public safety or border security, giving agents more discretion to consider individual circumstances. Republicans have criticized Biden as weak on immigration policy, saying his actions - including fewer detentions and deportations - have encouraged more illegal border crossings. The Supreme Court the following month voted 5-4 not to block Tipton's ruling halting the guidelines.

A unanimous three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, in New Orleans, refused to pause the ruling. The Biden administration filed an emergency application asking the Supreme Court to block Judge Tipton’s ruling. In a brief order in July, the court refused by a 5-to-4 vote. Lawyers for two states responded that the court’s ruling in the case, United States v. Texas, No.
