Donald Trump’s return to the presidency has done something no political opponent could: put an end date on his time atop the Republican Party. Trump single-handedly remade the Republican Party in his own image, not only becoming its unquestioned leader but also rewiring what the Grand Old Party stands for. “We are getting four more years of Trump and then eight years of JD Vance!” Trump Jr. said last week as he campaigned for Ohio Senate candidate Bernie Moreno. He had a shaky start, but he has steadied himself,” a veteran Republican operative said. “A Trump win means [the 2028] field will be slower to develop,” a longtime Republican operative said.

GOP senators and top aides say the race could go either way. Scott, who is a McConnell critic, has been more willing to fall in line with Trump than Cornyn or Thune over the last several years. Both Thune and Cornyn are closely politically aligned with the longtime GOP leader. Asked if he would like to get more public endorsements from GOP senators, Thune said he is not asking anyone to do that. They also point out his remarkable ascent – he defeated then-Senate Democratic Leader Tom Daschle in 2004 and is now on a path to possibly becoming GOP leader.

He sat down with BI to talk about the race, the national debt, abortion, and the state of his party. In an era where college-educated voters have been bleeding out of the GOP, Schweikert is increasingly an outlier, and he knows it. In order to keep looking like his district, Schweikert — a one-time conservative rabble-rouser who rode his way into Congress during the 2010 Tea Party wave — has had to make some changes. But now that Schweikert's sharing the ballot with Trump, he's not sweating that either. But while Democrats are hoping the state-level vote will boost turnout on their side and remind voters of Republicans' opposition to abortion, Schweikert sees it differently.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump falsely claimed Wednesday that his 2024 Democratic rival, Vice President Kamala Harris, “happened to turn Black” a few years ago, saying that “all of a sudden, she made a turn” in her identity. It’s a bad time to be a finance billionaire. Republicans on Wall Street, who had been largely coalescing around former President Donald J. Trump’s efforts to return to office, suffered outright repudiation this week with his pick of Senator JD Vance of Ohio as a running mate. Mr. Vance, a harsh critic of corporate interests and a former venture capitalist, solidified a feeling in the world of high finance that the balance of power in the party had suddenly shifted westward to Silicon Valley. In choosing Mr. Vance, Mr. Trump brushed off personal entreaties from some of the Republican Party’s biggest donors. While accepting his nomination on Wednesday at the Republican convention in Milwaukee, he said the party was done “catering to Wall Street.”

And yet one of the men, former President Donald Trump, 78, has been able to remake the Republican Party around his own divisive persona. Trump, between now and then, will pick a vice president from a short list of people who have previously criticized him but are now all in. Doug Burgum, who are also reportedly on Trump’s vice presidential short list, should be wary. A CNN poll released back in February, before Trump had sealed the Republican presidential nomination, suggested his top Republican rival, former South Carolina Gov. Former President Donald J. Trump’s process of choosing a running mate has entered its final stages in a frenzied and increasingly theatrical fashion as he privately narrows his focus to a set of top contenders. Behind closed doors, Mr. Trump has been primarily interested in Senator J.D. Doug Burgum of North Dakota and Senator Marco Rubio of Florida, according to three people who have spoken to the former president in recent days and insisted on anonymity to discuss private conversations. But Mr. Trump has befuddled some friends and advisers by continuing to solicit opinions on other contenders, including Ben Carson, a retired neurosurgeon and former housing secretary during his administration, and Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina. Meanwhile, a series of cryptic and suggestive messages from Mr. Trump’s campaign that the announcement could come as soon as this week has ignited 72 hours of unbridled conjecture, confusing political observers and Republican allies.

Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas has unexpectedly emerged as a top contender to become Donald J. Trump’s running mate, a signal that the former president is heavily weighing experience and the ability to run a disciplined campaign over other factors. Mr. Cotton’s ascendance comes as Mr. Trump’s leading vice-presidential options have increasingly come into focus, according to three people with direct knowledge of Mr. Trump’s thinking who insisted on anonymity to discuss private meetings. These people said that Mr. Trump’s other current favorites were Gov. Donald Trump has yet to choose a running mate for his third attempt to win the White House. Trump has not laid this out explicitly, although he has already said that he will not commit to honoring the outcome in November. I don’t change on that,” the former president said in a recent interview with The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “If it’s not, you have to fight for the right of the country.” We know, from the 2020 election, that anything short of a Trump victory is, for Trump, tantamount to fraud. “At the end of the day, the 47th president of the United States will be President Donald Trump.”(Watching Scott’s performance, one half-expects him to also tell his interlocutor, “Donald Trump is the kindest, bravest, warmest, most wonderful human being I’ve ever known in my life.”)

CNN —GOP former Rep. Liz Cheney on Sunday warned of a Republican Party “Putin wing” after former President Donald Trump responded to the death of outspoken Kremlin critic Alexey Navalny without actually mentioning him or Russian President Vladimir Putin. “We have to take seriously the extent to which you’ve now got a Putin wing of the Republican Party. Biden, in his comments at the White House following the announcement of Navalny’s death, forcefully pinned the blame on “Putin and his thugs.”“Make no mistake: Putin is responsible for Navalny’s death. What has happened to Navalny is yet more proof of Putin’s brutality. “When you think about Donald Trump, for example, pledging retribution, what Vladimir Putin did to Navalny is what retribution looks like in a country where a leader is not subject to the rule of law,” Cheney said Sunday.

With 1% of the vote in, the Associated Press called the race for Trump, who had 98% of the vote, his most lopsided victory to date. The feat was made easier by the fact that his only competition was a nominal opponent who doesn't even register in GOP primary polling. Nikki Haley, wasn't on the ballot for Thursday's caucuses, instead opting to compete earlier this week in a primary where no delegates were awarded. Trump's only competition Thursday was Texas businessman and pastor Ryan Binkley, who had 2% of the vote when Trump was declared the winner. But it was a signal to Haley that a substantial chunk of Nevada Republicans wanted her out of the race to clear the path for Trump.
