New York CNN —False claims about the federal response to the historic devastation left by Hurricane Helene are spreading out of control on social media, hampering recovery efforts in hard-hit areas, according to local officials. Elon Musk, the X owner who has endorsed Trump, has repeatedly posted rumors and innuendo denigrating the federal government’s response to Helene. Most of the misinformation is brazenly political, portraying President Joe Biden and Harris as incompetent in an attempt to help Trump win reelection. Some of the most-shared lies on social media have involved FEMA’s response. “Republican elected officials keep rebutting the BS, and MAGA does not care,” conservative columnist David French said in a social media post Saturday.

In today’s edition, we preview tonight's showdown between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. Programming note: Stay tuned for a special edition of the From the Politics Desk newsletter tonight, where we will be recapping and analyzing the presidential debate. One of the things I’ll be looking for is which voters each candidate goes out of their way to address directly. Something to watch for right at the beginning of the debate is whether Harris and Trump shake hands. That would boost her to 245 electoral votes and reduce the number of remaining state outcome combinations to 16.

You know, Hillary Clinton, who was, I think, kind of a terrible candidate, won the popular vote by two points. So I don’t think they gave her a very good hand to play. It doesn’t matter who you are, it matters that you’re right and you’re able to prove it or bet on it in some way. What wasn’t in the Harris model that should have been?” “Yeah, maybe you really can meme your way to victory. And there’s something in it that I don’t think she can explain how she does it, but it makes her a fascinating leader.

While Vance's first solo campaign rally in Virginia on Monday wasn't as disastrous or widely watched as Biden's debate performance, Fahey told Business Insider it still revealed a potential weakness. Beyond his loyalty to Trump, Fahey said, "Vance adds nothing to the Republican ticket."

O’SULLIVAN: So much of mainstream American politics now is being infected and affected by what is happening on what was once considered the real fringes — fringe platforms, fringe personalities. O’SULLIVAN: A lot of people got kicked off the major social media platforms after January 6. Because major social media platforms like Facebook have these rules. But I think just overall, in 2016, all the guards were down when it came to social media. And then in 2020 there was a big crackdown from the social media platforms, which got a huge amount of blowback from conservatives.

Donald Trump was tough, mean and self-pitying (a nifty combination). And the woman who is now Trump’s chief challenger, Nikki Haley, is one of the toughest politicians in America — by which I mean confrontational, willing to hammer her foes. When you read accounts of her days in South Carolina, her bellicosity fairly ripples off the pages. In a fantastic 2021 profile in Politico Magazine, Tim Alberta quotes a former South Carolina Republican Party chair: “Listen, man. Nikki Haley has a memory.

Such qualms grew more vocal after voter revulsion toward MAGA candidates cost Republicans their prophesied red wave in 2022. He had too much of an edge sometimes.” Perkins was clearly rooting for Ron DeSantis, who represented the shining hope of a post-Trump religious right. But there’s not going to be a post-Trump religious right — at least, not anytime soon. Evangelical leaders who started their alliance with Trump on a transactional basis, then grew giddy with their proximity to power, have now seen MAGA devour their movement whole. But this year, according to FiveThirtyEight’s polling average, Trump leads his nearest Republican rivals by more than 30 points.

THE KINGDOM, THE POWER, AND THE GLORY: American Evangelicals in an Age of Extremism, by Tim AlbertaWhat would Jesus do? It’s a question that the political journalist Tim Alberta takes seriously in his brave and absorbing new book, “The Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory,” pressing the evangelicals he meets to answer a version of it — even if a number of them clearly do not want to. This phenomenon, Alberta says, cannot simply be a matter of evangelicals mobilizing against abortion access and trying to save lives; after all, they have kept remarkably quiet when it comes to showing compassion for refugees or curbing gun violence, which is now, as Alberta notes, the leading cause of death for children in the United States. What he finds instead is that under the veneer of Christian modesty simmers an explosive rage, propelling Americans who piously declare their fealty to Jesus to act as though their highest calling is to own the libs. No wonder the popular image of evangelicalism, according to one disillusioned preacher, has devolved into “Mister Rogers with a blowtorch.”

Nikki Haley Is Gaining Ground - The New York Times
  + stars: | 2023-11-08 | by ( Katherine Miller | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +3 min
She’d need to continue dominating debates; she’d need to not fade or completely lose it when Mr. Trump turns a real attack on her; and more than anything she’d need a substantive critique, even if gently delivered, of Mr. Trump to feel true and land with people. A win in Iowa or New Hampshire for Ms. Haley would reset the entire primary. That response likely derived from the ridiculous period after Jan. 6, when Ms. Haley criticized Mr. Trump harshly, then seemed to dial it back. Part of it is the smooth, pain-free way Ms. Haley entered and extricated herself from the Trump administration, after criticizing him in 2016 and endorsing Marco Rubio. This picture of Ms. Haley culminated in Vivek Ramaswamy congratulating her on her future on the Raytheon board.

The image of Mr. Meadows somewhere surreal and incorrect, and only partially visible, is a fitting one. And in the audio where Mr. Trump jokes about classified documents and ruffles papers around, he’s reportedly talking to Mr. Meadows’s ghost writer. Then, later in the day, he contradicted his remark to say that Mr. Trump was “doing very well.”Why did he do any of this? At the time, the writer Tim Alberta noted various theories: Was Mr. Trump actually in bad shape inside the hospital, and Mr. Meadows thought people should know? Was Mr. Meadows overwhelmed?

CNN —Variety has a mess on its hands. Former CNN chief Jeff Zucker, The Atlantic journalist Tim Alberta, and Puck Editor-In-Chief Jon Kelly have all called for the outlet to publicly correct the record. But, thus far, Variety has resisted taking any such action, outside quietly removing the widely panned Tatiana Siegel-written feature from its online homepage. The outlet’s deafening silence comes as the piece begins to fall apart in public. (It goes without saying that Zucker’s camp denied to Siegel that this ever happened, but she printed it anyway.)

This week, CNN CEO Chris Licht was fired after a scathing profile was published in the Atlantic. In the profile, Licht details his own thoughts about how diversity should be defined in the media industry. In Alberta's profile, Licht claimed to be operating under his own idea of "diversity," one that does not include "virtue signaling." "I think 'Defund the police' would've been covered differently if newsrooms were filled with people who had lived in public housing," Licht continued. The diversity Licht did seem to value was geographic diversity, which can be a coded way of saying "not from the liberal coasts."

A trio of longtime executives have taken charge at CNN following the exit of Chris Licht. There's a moment in Tim Alberta's brutal profile of CNN's now-former CEO Chris Licht where Licht awkwardly takes a jab at his predecessor Jeff Zucker. CNN staffers don’t want the organization to be known for and consumed by a never-ending soap opera starring the C-suite. With Chris Licht’s dismissal as chairman and chief executive of CNN on Wednesday morning, staffers are aiming to get back to that mission. In recent months, David Zaslav, chief executive of CNN parent Warner Bros. The piece, in which Alberta spoke to more than 100 CNN employees, called into question Licht’s ability to lead the organization moving forward. Will the next network chief be an improvement over Licht?

New York CNN —Chris Licht, the embattled chief executive and chairman of CNN, whose brief one-year tenure at the network was stained by a series of severe missteps, departed the company on Wednesday. “I met with Chris and he will be leaving CNN,” David Zaslav, the chief executive of parent company Warner Bros. But it became increasingly clear that Licht’s tenure as the chief executive was not tenable and quickly coming to an end. The CNN chief had, in effect, lost the room. Hundreds of CNN employees were laid off in late November and early December.

Major CNN talent voiced concerns about CEO Chris Licht, The Wall Street Journal reports. The report follows a disastrous profile of Licht in The Atlantic by Tim Alberta. As if things weren't rocky enough for CNN Worldwide CEO Chris Licht, a new report from The Wall Street Journal revealed top on-air talent voiced concerns about the CEO to incoming COO David Leavy. The Journal reported that Licht is seen as more aloof and walled off from the newsroom, which contrasts with the style of his predecessor Jeff Zucker, who was often in the scrum.

CNN chair and CEO Chris Licht was ousted from the network on Wednesday. Insiders say Licht was responsible for pushing The Atlantic profile forward. I guess the lesson is: when your boss is about to do something really stupid, throw your body in the way. I say that because, last Friday, The Atlantic published a brutal 15,000+ word profile on CNN chair and CEO Chris Licht and today – well, today he got fired. But it was Licht who pushed the project forward over the summer of 2022, including over a long dinner with the writer.

CNN CEO Chris Licht claimed to lose nearly 50 pounds from diet and exercise. Now sources tell the Daily Mail and the Daily Beast's Confider that Licht boasted of using Ozempic. Licht told reporter Tim Alberta he dropped nearly 50 pounds over the last three years through a strict diet and grueling exercise regimen. In the Atlantic profile, Licht, 51, boasted about his ascetic eating habits and intense early-morning workouts with trainer Joe Maysonet. CNN CEO Chris Licht has apologized to his staff over a disastrous profile published by The Atlantic on Friday. Three days after The Atlantic published a bombshell profile about him, CNN CEO Chris Licht has apologized to his staff in an editorial call. The Atlantic profile, written by Tim Alberta, described Licht as aloof from staff, in contrast to his well-liked predecessor Jeff Zucker. Puck's Dylan Byers reports Licht told staffers on the call that he will move his office back to the newsroom. Insiders at CNN have also shared their theories on how the article became such an spectacular and ill-timed mess for Licht and CNN.

CNN —Chris Licht started CNN’s daily network editorial meeting on Monday by directly addressing the elephant in the room. “I want to say that I’ve spent the weekend doing a lot of thinking,” Licht told staffers, many of whom had dialed into the meeting specifically to hear from their embattled chief executive. Employees had not heard from Licht since The Atlantic’s Tim Alberta on Friday published a blistering 15,000-word profile on him. He said that he would “fight like hell” to win over the trust of the 3,500-person news organization he leads. In the immediate future, I’m told, Leavy is counseling Licht and CNN leadership’s primary goal is to stabilize the ship.
