Most people expected fireworks when it was announced that former President Donald Trump would appear at this year's National Association of Black Journalists convention in Chicago. And the conversation has heightened pressure on the NABJ from its members over the Trump visit. NABJ President Ken Lemon in a statement Tuesday said that the organization had been in talks with Harris' team for an in-person panel before she became the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee. But April Ryan, the White House correspondent for The Grio, reported that NABJ leadership informed Harris' team that it was preferable that she be in-person for her appearance. NABJ member Kathia Woods took to X to express her opposition to the organization's decision to invite Trump to speak in Chicago.

Reuters —California’s top state court on Thursday upheld a measure approved by voters allowing app-based services such as Uber and Lyft to consider drivers in the most populous U.S. state as independent contractors rather than as employees entitled to greater benefits. Whether gig workers should be treated as employees or contractors is a crucial issue for the ride-service industry. California is just one front in a nationwide legal battle over the classification of gig drivers and other contract workers. In June, Uber and Lyft agreed to adopt a $32.50 hourly minimum wage for drivers in Massachusetts and pay $175 million to settle a lawsuit by the state claiming they improperly treated drivers as independent contractors. A proposal that would allow app-based drivers to unionize will go before voters in the state in November.

Rucking appealed to me because it seemed like a simple way to make my daily lunchtime walks more efficient. That said, it doesn't look like a normal backpack, so I did get a few strange looks as I strolled around the rural village where I live on a weekday lunchtime. It felt very different from carrying a normal backpack, too, likely due to the weight and its positioning. AdvertisementI also learned that the ruck isn't something I will just always throw on when going for my daily walk. It ended up being a great workout, and definitely left me with aching muscles the next day.

Boeing begins 777-9 certification flight trials with FAA

Boeing has started certification flight testing of its long-delayed 777-9 with U.S. aviation regulators onboard, the U.S. planemaker said in an emailed statement. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment out of office hours. Type inspection authorization is typically associated with the start of the certification process, made after the FAA has examined technical data. The milestone allows FAA pilots to participate in flight testing needed to certify the plane for normal operation. Boeing has said that the 777-9 test fleet will undergo the most thorough commercial flight test effort the planemaker has ever undertaken.

As she pursues her seventh title, Toomey-Orr, 30, told BI how she uses rucking to elevate her workouts — and how regular people can too. With that in mind, Toomey-Orr expects rucking to feature in the CrossFit Games in some capacity, but the workouts aren't announced in advance and change every year. But the $6,000 in BNPL loans she'd racked up over roughly two years felt frivolous, she said, especially because they're planning to buy their first home. Many are seeking cover from high credit card interest rates. After trimming her discretionary spending and sticking to home-cooked meals, she said she's been able to whittle down her BNPL debt to about $1,200. Klarna said it had responsible spending limits for its users, whose average outstanding balance is $150, compared to the more than $6,000 for credit card users. Baird, for her part, acknowledged BNPL services can make inflation and high interest rates feel "easier" for those who can keep their shopping impulses under control.
