The Enlightenment philosopher Baruch Spinoza almost died for his ideals one day in 1672. Spinoza, a Sephardic Jew born in Amsterdam in 1632, was a passionate and outspoken defender of freedom, tolerance and moderation. Only one of his books, about the French philosopher Descartes, could be published under his own name during his lifetime. This is perhaps why new books about him are coming out all the time, including Jonathan Israel’s 2023 magnum opus “Spinoza, Life and Legacy” and even a best-selling French novel, “Le Problème Spinoza,” by Irvin Yalom. And all that for a philosopher who was denounced by Christians and Jews as the devil’s disciple long after his own time.

During a live interview on Twitter Spaces with BBC journalist James Clayton, Musk kept correcting Clayton when the latter called Musk Twitter's CEO. The BBC interview was one of several occasions that Musk has joked about his dog being Twitter CEO. On April 3, Musk replaced Twitter's bird logo with the Shiba Inu — or doge — meme.

The "Floki Inu" is also meme coin that takes its name from Musk's pup. In 2018, he tweeted: "We have a big dog called Gatsby, a little dog called Marvin the Martian & a cat named Schrödinger." Marvin made an appearance on Musk's Twitter again when the billionaire bought him a hand-knitted "Marvin the Martian" helmet in 2021.

Shutterstock/Jon BilousThere are four US states whose legal names include the term Commonwealth: Kentucky, Virginia, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania. However, this term does not affect laws or life in these states today, nor did it when they were first created either. According to the Massachusetts State Government, the term "Commonwealth" was incorporated into their constitution in 1780 and was used to express the ideal that "the people [of Massachusetts] ... form themselves into a free, sovereign, and independent body politic, or state." The states of Pennsylvania and Virginia included similar language in their state constitutions in 1776, as did Kentucky in 1850.
