CNN —Since joining Manchester City, Erling Haaland has broken record after record, setting expectations for himself that are seemingly impossible to reach. Yet, somehow, he has continued breaking records this season, scoring nine goals in just four Premier League games – the most prolific start to a season ever, surpassing the previous best of eight set by Wayne Rooney. Haaland has been so dominant this season that his individual total of nine goals is more than any Premier League team, except his own Manchester City, has managed between them. And, on Saturday, only the width of a goalpost denied the Norwegian star an unprecedented run of hattricks in three consecutive Premier League games. CNN —Spain was crowned the men’s Olympic soccer champion for the first time since 1992 after beating host France 5-3 after extra time in an all-time great final. Expectations were high for France going into the men’s gold medal match, but the reality of the first half was brutal for Thierry Henry’s side. A lot was riding on French legend Henry, who is used to winning as a player but not as a coach. But France finally came unstuck in extra time as Sergio Camello scored two brilliant chips to make it 5-3 and seal the gold medal for Spain. You have a very strong team like France who can sit back and defend very well, but we were able to break them,” he said.

CNN —The US men’s soccer team suffered a brutal return to Olympic action as it was beaten 3-0 by host nation France in its opening match of the Paris Games on Wednesday. The soccer tournament at this year’s Olympics kicked off two days before the Opening Ceremony, with teams consisting predominantly of under-23 players. Playing in its first Olympic Games since 2008, the young US men’s team knew an opening match against the host would be a tough test but, for the first hour at least, it looked more than capable of causing an upset. It will then play Guinea in the final group match on July 30. Meanwhile, Spain beat Uzbekistan 2-1, while Japan thrashed Paraguay 5-0 in some of the other standout scores of the soccer tournament so far.
