Gary Allen Montelongo won $10,000 for a science project on train derailment. Montelongo built and coded an experiment on railroad suspension, then won a national competition. AdvertisementThe internship ended, but Montelongo couldn't get the derailment off his mind, so he went down to the train tracks near his house. Then he built three sets of model railroad tracks out of foam and fitted them with three different types of springs: fresh new springs, midlife springs, and old, worn-out springs. This mimicked the different suspension systems he'd seen at the train tracks near his home.

Earnings drove the stock market higher — can they do it again in the week ahead? But he acknowledged that timing is key because our portfolio discipline mandates that we consider lightening up our stock exposure in an overbought market. In fact, AMD was our worst-performing stock for the entire week, losing more than 7% following the prior week's 1.8% slide. Energy was the worst sector of the week for the market as oil prices sank. In the week ahead, housing numbers are the main draw on the economic front.

Morgan Stanley is pounding the table on several stocks as investors wait to see if October markets are tumultous or quiet. Morgan Stanley said that even though recent data shows that total cold storage inventory has been down, Lineage still sees plenty of room for growth. Morgan Stanley walked away from Thermo's recent analyst day raving about the stock. Overseas growth, especially in China, remains subdued for now, but Morgan Stanley is optimistic that the latest China stimulus will improve the economic outlook. In addition, Morgan Stanley sees a "significant runway" for higher margins as the Federal Reserve continues its rate-cutting cycle.

That improvement in the bioprocessing end market is super important because it has been a huge overhang for Danaher shares, and the life sciences space in general. We were concerned about the bioprocessing market after rival Sartorius cut its guidance last week. The management team has effectively navigated the bioprocessing slowdown better than others and kept expectations managed — a big reason we've stuck by the stock during a difficult few quarters. Based on these strong results and the improving bioprocessing market, we are raising our price target to $295 from $280 and reiterating our 1 rating. All three operating segments are expected to post sales decline rates in the low single digits.

But this heavy focus on just a few stocks has led one portfolio manager to urge investors to diversify, naming two stocks he thinks look particularly attractive. Dunn, who also holds the title of co-head of value equity at Morgan Stanley, said other stocks offered investors "a lot of opportunity," naming two he likes. Thermo Fisher Scientific Healthcare services and biotechnology company Thermo Fisher is another favorite for Dunn, who sees it as an industry leader and "supermarket of tools and analytics." "We think [Thermo Fisher is] really ready to sort of benefit from this as the year progresses." Shares in Thermo Fisher are up around 9.5% year-to-date and 12.8% in the last 12 months.

Global stock markets may be coming under pressure from geopolitical tensions and sticky inflation — but one portfolio manager sees potential in several stocks. Hinchliffe oversees more than $1 billion of PineBridge's assets via its Global Focus Equity Fund . What we are trying to do is beat the benchmark by constructing our portfolio to be similar to the market from a risk perspective," Hinchliffe said. The portfolio manager noted that they "clearly led the market last year based on fantastic earnings growth by and large."

The Nasdaq sank 2% on Friday as Netflix dropped nearly 11% post-earnings and Club stock Nvidia fell 10%, entering bear market territory but still up more than 50% in 2024. Following a much stronger-than-expected March retail sales report last month, fresh economic data and six Club stock earnings will take center stage in the week ahead. Big names boosting dividends as of late include Walmart , which hiked its annual payment by 9% to 83 cents a share. Meta Platforms made headlines earlier this month when it announced it would issue its first-ever quarterly dividend – a payout of 50 cents per share. Government spending, including the CHIPS Act and the infrastructure legislation known as the Inflation Reduction Act , and the upcoming presidential election are also key considerations for companies, Silverblatt added. Dividend growth names, for instance, might offer you lower yields in the present, but you have the prospect of higher future payouts. "You need to know the fund, what they invest in and what the restrictions are," Silverblatt said.

A new Netflix docudrama, “ Einstein and the Bomb ,” uses footage and reenactments of the famous scientist and his shifting view of nuclear weapons. It quotes his 1945 Nobel Prize address expressing concern over the future use of nuclear weapons, saying, “The war is won, but the peace is not.”Albert Einstein warned that nuclear weapons could lead to the end of humankind. The general public, and even many men in positions of authority, have not realized what would be involved in a war with nuclear bombs. But we now know, especially since the Bikini test, that nuclear bombs can gradually spread destruction over a very much wider area than had been supposed. Although an agreement to renounce nuclear weapons as part of a general reduction of armaments3 would not afford an ultimate solution, it would serve certain important purposes.

DocuSign's deal talks with Bain, Hellman & Friedman stall: Reuters

The Docusign Inc. application for download in the Apple App Store on a smartphone arranged in Dobbs Ferry, New York, U.S., on Thursday, April 1, 2021. Bain Capital and Hellman & Friedman have cooled in their pursuit of DocuSign Inc over disagreements on how much they should pay to acquire the provider of online signature services, people familiar with the matter said on Monday. It remains, possible, however, that the deal talks will resume in the future, the sources added, requesting anonymity because the matter is confidential. A deal for DocuSign would have been one of the biggest leveraged buyouts of 2024. A spike in financing costs in the last two years has made financing leveraged buyouts more expensive and big deals harder to clinch.

All three major averages posted gains for the third consecutive week, lifted by solid quarterly earnings and positive economic data. Earnings season ramps up next week, with five of the Super Six mega-cap stocks delivering results. Employment numbers are the most important economic data, with Friday's January nonfarm payrolls report carrying the most weight. The January ISM Manufacturing report on Thursday and December's factory orders report Friday are expected to show the sector still in contraction mode. But earnings and commentary this week from peer Sartorious made us encouraged about a return to growth in 2024.
