SPRINGFIELD, Ill. AP —The Illinois Supreme Court on Thursday overturned actor Jussie Smollett’s conviction on charges that he staged a racist and homophobic attack against himself in downtown Chicago in 2019 and lied to police. Emailed messages seeking comment were sent Thursday to Foxx’s office and to Smollett’s attorney, who have argued that Smollett has been victimized by a racist and politicized justice system. Testimony at his trial indicated Smollett paid $3,500 to two men whom he knew from “Empire” to carry out the attack. A state appellate court ruling upheld Smollett’s conviction, declaring that no one promised Smollett he wouldn’t face a fresh prosecution after accepting the original deal. Illinois Supreme Court Chief Justice Mary Jane Theis and Justice Joy Cunningham took no part in Thursday’s decision.

The birdie is about the fastest projectile you’ll see at these Olympics, and it’s as light as a feather — literally. When you’re watching the Games, keep in mind just how much an object’s speed can determine the outcome. Is the object fast enough to go great distances? Is it fast enough to befuddle an opponent? The 2024 men’s Olympic basketball tournament at the Paris Games is overflowing with star power — and not just from Team USA. Even South Sudan, the lowest-ranked team in the tournament, proved its mettle by nearly upsetting Team USA in a tune-up matchup last weekend. White was a member of the 2019 FIBA World Cup team, while Edwards and Haliburton made their debuts at the 2023 FIBA World Cup. Twenty-seven of the 30 NBA teams will have at least one player participating in this tournament. Can Team USA do it again in 2024?

This was nothing short of a communist invasion, in his eyes, and the patriots of Green Charter needed to rise up and confront the Red Peril. But the backlash in Green Charter represents something seldom seen since the Red Scare: a quasi-militant, homegrown resistance to the perceived threat of communism at home. But as the war over Gotion began to consume Green Charter, Riebow began to feel that the township board was behaving "too secretly." It's easy to dismiss what's happened in Green Charter as yet another sign of America's descent into dangerous incivility. Asked about Gotion's plans in Green Charter, Panetta replied, "I don't think there's any question that they are going to take advantage of that situation."

All three films question male conventions and genres in ways that show exactly why we need more films by, and more nominations for, women-directed films. Les Films PelléasTriet’s “Anatomy of a Fall” is about a German novelist, Sandra (Sandra Hüller), accused of murdering her husband Samuel (Samuel Theis). Director Celine Song talks to lead actress Greta Lee on the set of "Past Lives." That doesn’t mean that women directors are less interesting or less original than male directors. Triet, Song and Gerwig have proved that women directors are uniquely positioned to question and rethink old genres, old stories and old ideas.

NEW YORK (AP) — Since Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall” premiered at the Cannes Film Festival where it won the Palme d’Or, Sandra Hüller has been dogged by a question: Did she do it? MANILA, Philippines (AP) — There will be no gold medal for the U.S. at this World Cup. Germany — the last unbeaten team left in the tournament at 7-0 — will play Serbia on Sunday (8:40 a.m. EDT) for the World Cup title. Serbia beat Canada in the first semifinal, getting to its second World Cup final in the last three tournaments; it lost 129-92 to the U.S. in the 2014 championship game. Germany had been 0-6 against the Americans in World Cup or Olympic competition, usually getting blown out in those games. Once again, even bringing the only roster filled with all NBA players wasn’t enough for the U.S. at the World Cup.

New York (CNN Business) Tuesday's massive stock market meltdown should serve as a reminder to investors that in times of turmoil, it pays to own shares of companies that also pay you. Dividend paying stocks are in vogue again, even as long-term government bond yields have surged dramatically this year. And for those playing the longer game, dividends can be reinvested to buy even more shares in those same companies. Exxon Mobil XOM Chevron CVX The high dividend fund, as its name implies, has exposure to companies that offer big yields, such as energy giantsand. Both stocks have soared this year as oil prices have skyrocketed.
