Lorraine Graves, a ballerina known for her willowy frame and majestic grace who starred as a principal dancer for the groundbreaking Dance Theater of Harlem for nearly two decades, died on March 21 in Norfolk, Va. She was 66. Her nephew Jason Graves said the cause of her death, in a hospital, was yet to be determined. Its residents included an unemployed man in his 50s, his barely-holding-on mother, a pregnant woman, two refugees — and us. Seated adjacent to the facility’s dingy common room, we became, in the playwright’s own staging, fellow residents. But if the others eyed us like we might steal a precious sandwich, we could blithely leave when the play was over. The New York Theater Workshop audience, too, learned a great deal, as the questions bedeviling so many relationships — the complexity of consent and the meaning of control — played out before us in this perfectly timed hot-button play.

Across the hall, in the building where I rent my studio, Abdiwahab (Abdi) Ali, a furniture designer and social worker, set up shop. From the moment he discovered I was a filmmaker, he insisted, “Bro, you should make a film about my life.” These words would soon become the opening of this short documentary. As Abdi and I got to know each other better, I realized that despite our differences, we share a creative and humorous kinship. It dawned on me that through our collaboration, a film about his life could address several pressing issues in Dutch society and the challenges of capturing the intricacies of another person’s story. During the making of “Neighbour Abdi,” I went on an unforgettable journey within the walls of Abdi’s and my studios to discover what can happen when you reach out to your neighbor.
