Homeowners and renters insurance policies do not cover flood damage, however. Most people who have flood insurance get it through the federal government, via FEMA's National Flood Insurance Program, experts said. On average, about 30% of U.S. homes in the highest-risk areas for flooding have flood insurance, according to the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton Risk Center. Private insurers also offer flood policies and may offer higher coverage than FEMA's policies, according to the Insurance Information Institute. What basement items are covered by flood insurance?

The Think Tank warned US carmakers would need to "double down on genuine technological innovation" if they wanted to continue to compete with Chinese companies. New York CNN —Airbnb has undermined users’ safety by scaling back its work to remove extremists from its platform, a former contractor alleged in a new whistleblower complaint. “Airbnb spent much of 2023 scaling back and undermining the work of its team tasked with removing individuals affiliated with dangerous and extremist organizations from the platform,” Whistleblower Aid, the organization representing Hernandez, said in a statement. Airbnb disputed Hernandez’s claims, saying that it continues to enforce against members of dangerous or extremist organizations. And in the following years, it pointed to that pledge when removing users associated with extremist organizations. Prior to her work at Airbnb, Hernandez worked as a researcher for the Terrorism Research and Analysis Consortium, an organization that tracks terrorist and hate groups, according to Whistleblower Aid.

Israel has already gone into Rafah, but Biden characterized their current level of involvement as short of his red line. I’m old enough to remember when Democrats impeached another President for supposedly withholding foreign aid that had been approved by Congress. The Government Accountability Office, a nonpartisan watchdog, formally concluded that the Trump administration broke the law in withholding congressionally approved aid to Ukraine. Biden relied on a bipartisan coalition to pass a $95 billion foreign aid package for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan. That said, while Biden will need bipartisan support to keep the government funded in September, he likely will not ask for more Ukraine aid anytime soon

"When we do the risk assessment around that baseline, the chances that we would have something like a global recession is fairly minimal. The Washington DC-based institute this week nudged its global growth outlook slightly higher to 3.2% in 2024 and projects the same rate in 2025. One of the International Monetary Fund's top economists signals little risk of a global recession, despite the ongoing rumblings of geopolitical uncertainty. That has all combined with the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, which had its biggest wider impact on energy prices in Europe in 2022. And that's one of the big risks that we do see, the implications that could have for oil prices could be substantial.

Shooting down the fighter-bombers means putting precious air defenses closer to the front, where they'll be at greater risk. Ukrainian air defenses also don't have enough ammo. Glide bombs began showing up last year but have seen increasing use since the start of this year. Russia has a variety of glide bombs in its arsenal, including some weighing more than 6,000 pounds.

Russia seems to be more heavily using its air force for glide bomb attacks, the ISW said. The ISW had previously released an assessment on Monday that suggested Ukraine's reported successes had caused Russia's air force to scale back its flights. Experts warned that it would be devastating for Ukraine if Russia continued to be able to do this. Russia using glide bombs near Avdiivka may be why Ukraine has been able to shoot down so many Russian jets, experts previously told Business Insider. Russian aircraft need to fly higher to launch them, giving Ukraine's weaponry more time to target and hit them, they said.

AdvertisementWestern delays in ammunition and aid to Ukraine have likely helped Russia launch offensive operations on at least three fronts, military experts said. These shortages, and the potential for no further aid being given by the US, have "likely encouraged Russian forces to exploit the situation" to launch offensive operations over the past few weeks, it said. AdvertisementIt warned that these attacks will "likely hinder Ukrainian forces from preparing personnel and materiel for renewed counteroffensive operations." The White House said this month that Ukraine could lose Avdiivka because of a lack of ammunition, despite Russia seeing larger losses there. Ukraine is busy trying to increase its domestic production of ammunition, but Russia, which is much larger and has more domestic resources, is also doing the same.

Ukraine only needs to advance 10 miles to "crush the Russian army," says a war expert. They apply military math and calculate that Ukraine does not need to advance 50 miles to "crush the Russian army and strangle the troops in frontline fortifications"— 10 miles will suffice to make headway, wrote Kallberg. From here, the Ukrainian counteroffensive needs to advance 7-10 miles to disrupt Russia's east-west transport routes, inhibiting the Russian army's ability to mobilize and fight. Ukraine's counteroffensive has breached Russian first defensive line, Gen. Mark Milley said. Milley said that the advance is "bloody, long and slow" but that this is not unusual in war. "This defensive line, which the Russians spent many months preparing, it's got minefields, it's got dragon's teeth, it's got tank ditches. One Russian blogger writing about the upturn in Ukraine's fighting fortunes said: "The bastards are rapidly advancing, covered by artillery strikes."
