The sale of conspiracy theorist Alex Jones’ media empire is a major blow to one of the defining independent media brands that ushered in a new era of fringe thinking, mainstreaming conspiracy theories once banished to the edges of the internet. And while Jones’ Infowars brand is now owned by the satirical news site The Onion, media researchers and conservative media experts say its legacy will live on thanks to the far-right media ecosystem it helped inspire, which continues to flourish. YouTube and other social media platforms began removing Jones’ videos in 2018 as they were flagged for violating content rules related to violent and graphic content. “What is going to happen with Infowars ‘Onion-ified,’ and what is going to happen to the kinds of internet conspiracy theorists who Alex Jones represents?” Phillips asked. “Alex Jones is not.”

The 2024 election may have shown the mainstream media is losing its grip on political commentary. AdvertisementThe campaigns in this year's presidential election have shone a light on the waning influence of mainstream media. AdvertisementWhile mainstream media outlets are establishing growing audiences on apps like TikTok, young people still tend to get their news from influencers and non-legacy media accounts. Doug Eldridge, founder of Achilles PR agency, told BI that legacy media outlets will use the election to reassess their next steps. Several University of Alabama students were charged in alleged fraternity hazing incidents after a pledge said he was shoved, stepped on, and had things thrown at him. Court documents filed Wednesday state that videos from the TV room and band room captured the alleged hazing. Molineaux and another fraternity member are alleged to have "shoved and struck one of the pledges," the filing says. The University of Alabama said hazing is strictly prohibited and an investigation led to the campus police department serving warrants against several members. "Hazing violates University policy, the Code of Student Conduct, and the law, and it is a matter that the University takes seriously," the school said in a statement.

Ryan Williams’ extraordinary 75-yard touchdown with just over two minutes remained was the decisive score in No. Former tennis superstar Serena Williams even jokingly remarked at how “impressive” her 17-year-old “cousin” has been doing at Alabama. “Whether Ryan ever catches a ball again for the rest of his career, he’s already entrenched himself in Alabama tradition for that play,” Kelly told CNN. It was when the pair reversed roles – Ryan Williams now catching passes – that Kelly, whose office was overlooking the practice field, realized the young athlete’s potential as a receiver. These images and videos often create a more engaging and shareable post — regardless of whether they’re based in truth. There were cats holding military-style rifles to defend themselves, cats holding up political signs, cats and ducks sitting side-by-side, AI-generated humans holding cat-related signs and cats and ducks being cuddled by Trump. U.S. President Joe Biden speaks as he announces a new plan for federal student loan relief during a visit to Madison Area Technical College Truax Campus, in Madison, Wisconsin, U.S, April 8, 2024. But the Biden administration official told CNBC that the Department of Education had only instructed loan servicers to get ready for the debt cancellation. The program is the third Biden administration effort to forgive student debt to end up blocked by Republican-led legal challenges. In June 2023, the Supreme Court ruled that the administration's first attempt to cancel up to $400 billion in student debt without prior authorization from Congress was unconstitutional. Two months ago, a federal appeals court temporarily halted Biden's new affordable repayment plan for student loan borrowers, known as SAVE.

Even with the financial burden his student debt has brought him, Larry said he has tried to remain optimistic about the prospect of debt relief, given President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris' actions during their term. Larry and millions of other student-loan borrowers will have to keep waiting. It's the same argument a different group of GOP states used that led the Supreme Court to strike down Biden's first attempt at broad debt relief last summer. Their arguments are based on internal documents the states obtained from the Education Department to federal student-loan servicers regarding preparation to implement its second try at broader debt relief. According to the documents, the Education Department sent a memo to MOHELA saying, "In September of 2024, the Biden-Harris Administration will launch the Federal Student Loan Debt Initiative."

How plaid became popular for school uniforms
  + stars: | 2024-09-05 | by ( Jacqui Palumbo | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +9 min
CNN —As students return to school, one patterned textile now synonymous with uniforms will make its seasonal reappearance on pleated skirts, jumpers and ties: plaid. It’s a family of textiles with broad scholarly appeal, with both religious and secular schools worldwide incorporating plaid into uniforms, from Mexico to Japan to Australia. Centuries of romanticizing Highlander clanship and identity has likely influenced our contemporary understanding of the textile, Maxwell noted. But the textile didn’t become a fixture of school uniforms until the 1960s, according to historian and educator Sally Dwyer-McNulty, who authored “Common Threads: A Cultural History of Clothing in American Catholicism” in 2014. (Dwyer-McNulty herself attended two different Catholic schools in Philadelphia, wearing plaid uniforms through high school).

Speaking on CBS's "Face the Nation," Sen. Lindsey Graham said all presidential nominees, including Biden and Trump, should take a cognitive test. Cognitive tests are usually quick and simple and can check for functions such as concentration, abstract thinking, language, and memory. He told ABC's Stephanopoulos on Friday: "I have a cognitive test every single day." According to White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, after Biden's physical in February, his doctors decided he didn't need a cognitive test.

While the expansion of legal sports betting has made gambling more accessible, it's also helped spot infractions like these. The MLB also said it was tipped off about Marcano's betting activity by a legal sports-betting operator, ESPN reported. There's little data available to show whether gambling violations like these occur more or less often in the age of legal gambling, in part because they weren't easily tracked before 2018. They could be college football players betting on the NFL, or NFL players betting on games their teams weren't playing in. As sports-betting continues to expand in more states and the industry evolves, there may be more gambling scandals to come.

PTSD Has Surged Among College Students
  + stars: | 2024-05-30 | by ( Ellen Barry | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Post-traumatic stress disorder diagnoses among college students more than doubled between 2017 and 2022, climbing most sharply as the coronavirus pandemic shut down campuses and upended young adults’ lives, according to new research published on Thursday. The prevalence of PTSD rose to 7.5 percent from 3.4 percent during that period, according to the findings. Researchers analyzed responses from more than 390,000 participants in the Healthy Minds Study, an annual web-based survey. “The magnitude of this rise is indeed shocking,” said Yusen Zhai, the paper’s lead author, who heads the community counseling clinic at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. Zhai, an assistant professor in the Department of Human Studies, attributed the rise to “broader societal stressors” on college students, such as campus shootings, social unrest and the sudden loss of loved ones from the coronavirus.

The portfolio manager whisperers
  + stars: | 2024-05-03 | by ( Alex Morrell | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +24 min
AdvertisementHistorically, a hedge fund's chief investment office or senior portfolio manager was responsible for vetting and wooing key investment hires. They can also help hedge funds save on outside recruiting costs, which can add up to tens of millions a year. Hedge funds targeted institutional salespeople at investment banks with exposure to hedge funds, as well as asset allocators with chops in portfolio-manager selection and due diligence. Assets at multimanager hedge funds have boomed since 2018. The principle may work for fictional baseball diamonds, but the reality at hedge funds is more complicated.
