Elon Musk announced his new company xAI which he says has the goal to understand the true nature of the universe. Elon Musk's artificial intelligence startup, xAI, is being accused by environmental and health advocates of adding to the pollution problem in Memphis, Tennessee, by using natural gas burning turbines at its new data center, and doing so without a permit. The letter notes that xAI "has installed at least 18 gas combustion turbines over the last several months (with more potentially on the way)." The company has been using the turbines to power the facility, but its long-term plan is to use power from the local utility, Memphis Light, Gas and Water and the Tennessee Valley Authority. MLGW told CNBC that it started providing 50 megawatts of power to xAI at the beginning of August.

Steam feeding into the Unit 3 turbine generator of the Vogtle nuclear power plant in Waynesboro, Ga. “The United States is now committed to trying to accelerate the deployment of nuclear energy,” John Kerry, President Biden’s climate envoy, said in September. One recent Pew survey found that 57 percent of Americans favor more nuclear plants, up from 43 percent in 2016. A NuScale engineer gave a tour of a control room simulator, modeling the company’s plans for new nuclear reactors, in 2013. “The demand for clean energy is almost unprecedented,” said Maria Korsnick, president of the Nuclear Energy Institute, an industry group.

The advisers said the standoff between Republicans and Democrats in Congress and the White House has already raised taxpayer borrowing costs through weak Treasury auctions and high yields for short-dated Treasury Bills, while ratings agencies are already publishing analyses of potential U.S. ratings downgrades. They said the Treasury market's role as the backbone of the entire financial system would be called into question, leaving the debt market without a benchmark pricing firm and causing investors to pull back from fixed-income and equity markets. Their letter was distributed after President Joe Biden met with Republican House of Representatives Speaker Kevin McCarthy at the White House with no signs of softening their positions, though they agreed to continue talks. The advisers said that following the banking turmoil that started in March, the debate over raising the debt limit is "reckless and irresponsible." A protracted negotiation would have short-term costs, but a default is an "unthinkable" event, the executives said.
For the first time in almost seven years, a new nuclear reactor has started up in the United States. On Monday, Georgia Power announced that the Vogtle nuclear reactor unit 3 has started a nuclear reaction inside the reactor. It's when the nuclear fission process starts splitting atoms and generating heat, Georgia Power said in a written announcement. However, because nuclear energy is generated without releasing carbon dioxide emissions, which cause global warming, the current increased sense of urgency in responding to climate change has given nuclear energy a chance at a renaissance. The cost associated with building nuclear reactors is a major barrier to a potential resurgence in nuclear energy, however.

A dramatic video shows the intentional implosion of three cooling towers at a shuttered Kentucky coal plant. Video captured from multiple angles shows the implosion of the 435-foot cooling towers, conducted by the Tennessee Valley Authority on Thursday in order to clear the grounds for future use. The footage shows the towers slowly collapsing to the ground in clouds of dust. The Tennessee Valley Authority, which operated the Drakesboro plant, stopped using two of the towers in 2017, and the third in 2020, which effectively closed the plant after nearly 60 years. The implosion comes as the corporation plans to invest billions of dollars to fund "carbon-free, low-cost, reliable power" over the next several decades.
