Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid shoved a newspaper columnist during an altercation Saturday, according to multiple reports. The altercation happened in the 76ers’ locker room after the team’s 124-107 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday, according to multiple reporters who were in the locker room for a postgame media availability. Embiid reportedly shoved Marcus Hayes, a columnist for the Philadelphia Inquirer. In his column, Hayes mentioned Embiid’s son and late brother as reasons for why Embiid should start playing. Before the current season, Embiid said in an effort to help preserve his knees — which have both required surgery in the past — he would “probably never” play in back-to-back games again in his career.

CNN —The National Basketball Association is investigating reports that Philadelphia 76ers star center Joel Embiid “shoved” a columnist following the team’s loss to the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday night. A visibly angry Embiid confronted Philadelphia Inquirer columnist Marcus Hayes as reporters entered the Sixers locker room, according to the Associated Press. Embiid reportedly continued mouthing at Hayes, who eventually offered an apology to the 76ers center. CNN has reached out to the Philadelphia 76ers, Embiid’s agent and the Philadelphia Inquirer but did not immediately hear back. “This poor conditioning apparently seems to have delayed his debut this season.”Philadelphia 76ers' Joel Embiid, top left, watches from the bench during the 76ers' game.

CNN —Dwyane Wade’s status as a Miami Heat legend was further cemented on Sunday as the franchise unveiled an eight-foot statue of the three-time NBA champion. The 42-year-old played 16 seasons in the NBA and was selected as an All-Star 13 times before retiring in 2019. One comment on an Instagram video of the unveiling said that the statue better resembled Laurence Fishburne as ’Morpheus’ from the movie ‘The Matrix’ than Wade. Fans criticized the likeness of the statue although Wade himself didn't seem too bothered and was relishing the moment. Tyrese Haliburton led the way for the Pacers with 22 points but still looks a long way off last season’s form.

But the Suns surged back and Durant tied the game with a fadeaway jumper over two Clippers players with just 21 seconds remaining to force OT. Durant finished with a team-high 25 points to go with seven rebounds, three steals and a block, while Bradley Beal added 24 points. Superstar center Joel Embiid has signed a three-year, approximately $192.9 million extension with the team that runs through the 2028-29 season, ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne reported Friday morning. The seven-time All-Star is set to make approximately $51.4 million in the 2024-25 season and $55.2 million in 2025-26, according to Spotrac. The Sixers later officially announced that Embiid signed a “multi-year” extension. While he returned late in the regular season, Embiid had semi-regular injury scares and also dealt with Bell’s palsy during the playoffs. The Sixers will hope George can lessen the burden on Embiid and Maxey to create shots and summon late-game heroics.

CNN —Joel Embiid and the Philadelphia 76ers have agreed to a three-year, $192.9 million maximum contract extension, a source familiar with the contract figures told CNN. Taking his total career earnings to $514.8 million, Embiid would become the fifth member of the NBA’s $500M club, joining LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant and 76ers teammate Paul George. I had no idea when I was drafted as a 20-year-old kid from Cameroon how lucky I was to be in Philadelphia,” Embiid said in a statement. We’re ecstatic that this extension keeps him and his family in Philadelphia for years to come,” 76ers managing partner Josh Harris said in a statement. During his career, Embiid has made the All-NBA Team five times, the All-Star team in each of the last seven years, and was NBA scoring champion in both 2021-22 and 2022-23.

He’s going to be a killer rebounder, monster screener and will consistently establish his position even against some of the stronger NBA players. I’m done doubting Edey, even as an NBA player. As an enormous ballhandler with serious touch and incredible vision as a passer, Topić is clearly an NBA player, even if it doesn’t all translate. Shannon is an elite athlete, but the NBA game requires more nuance, especially if he continues to be an inconsistent shooter. However, I also think he’s more than just a floor spacer on offense in spot-up situations and potentially as an off-ball scorer.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Joel Embiid has been re-evaluated by doctors and they are “happy with the progress” the 76ers center is making following meniscus surgery on his left knee, Philadelphia head coach Nick Nurse said Saturday. “I think there’s always stages of how these things progress,” Nurse said before the Sixers faced the Charlotte Hornets. Embiid's status has been a source of speculation with an expected team medical update never coming on the re-evaluation after the Feb. 6 surgery. Embiid, who celebrated his 30th birthday on Saturday, has missed 21 games since tearing the meniscus against Golden State on Jan. 30. In the time since, Philadelphia has fallen from third in the Eastern Conference to eighth, going 7-13 in the 20 games leading into Saturday.

Tim McGraw — his name also the title of one of Swift's early breakout hits — delivered the game ball. Swift joined other Philly luminaries Patti LaBelle and John Oates as 2008 World Series anthem singers. Hackash said the team mostly worked through Swift’s family, including her parents Scott and Andrea, to snag an appearance. Her first Reading game was kind of a stepping stone to get something on tape to send to the Sixers. Former Sixers manager of game operations Kathy Drysdale said in 2002 that Swift’s voice caught her attention immediately on a tape submitted by Scott Swift.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The slumping Philadelphia 76ers have acquired guard Buddy Hield from the Indiana Pacers for Marcus Morris Jr., Furkan Korkmaz and three second-round draft picks, a person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press on Thursday. The Sixers also sent Daniel House and a 2024 second-round pick to the Detroit Pistons, the person said. The House trade creates $4.3 million in cap space as part of the traded player exception. The trades have opened salary cap and roster space for the Sixers to pursue a player on the buyout market. Hield has been one of the top 3-point shooters in the NBA for years in both volume and makes.

CNN —Philadelphia 76ers superstar Joel Embiid is set to undergo surgery to deal with a left knee issue, the team announced on Sunday. “Joel Embiid will have a corrective procedure this week to address an injury to the lateral meniscus in his left knee. Embiid has spent time out of the Philadelphia lineup this season as result of persistent injury issues and has missed 14 out of the 76ers’ 48 games. The Cameroonian was recently named to his seventh career All-Star team, but it appears that he will miss this month’s festivities in Indianapolis. Embiid can only miss three more games before he becomes ineligible for an award, meaning that his injury essentially takes him out of MVP contention.
