I tried on similar T-shirts from Old Navy, Gap, and Banana Republic. The Old Navy top would be fine for casual wear, but I wouldn't wear it if I was looking to impress. My favorite T-shirt was the option from Gap, which could easily be dressed up or down. Comparable sales at Old Navy rose 1% in the third quarter, the first increase in 10 quarters. "Old Navy gained market share, an encouraging early proof point that work to improve both product assortment and brand messaging" were driving results, Gap Chief Financial Officer Katrina O'Connell said on Thursday following the earnings. Gap's struggles with outdated inventory at its namesake brand and Old Navy had pushed customers to look for newer and fresher styles at rivals like Shein and Amazon.com (AMZN.O). Jefferies analysts said new CEO Richard Dickson's prior experience in reinvigorating brands like Barbie at Mattel (MAT.O) could bring a lift to the Old Navy banner. The apparel maker's executives also alluded to a "longer recovery" time for Banana Republic and Athleta, which has seen "product misfires" and weak "retail execution".

Aug 25 (Reuters) - Shares of Gap (GPS.N) climbed as much as 8% on Friday, after the apparel retailer's quarterly profit beat indicated that the Old Navy parent's cost cuts were paying off even as easing demand weighed on its sales forecast. Gross margin increased 310 basis points to 37.6% in the second quarter from a year earlier. "(It's) no easy task at hand, but the ground work has been laid," said Barclays analyst Adrienne Yih. Still, the company forecast a steeper-than-expected drop in current-quarter sales and missed sales expectations for the second quarter and also warned it was losing market share to rivals including Shein, Amazon and T.J.
