ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — Atlantic City's casinos saw their operating profits decline by nearly 14% in the third quarter of this year, figures released Friday by New Jersey gambling regulators show. The state Division of Gaming Enforcement issued statistics showing that the nine casinos had a collective gross operating profit of $236.5 million in the third quarter. “Consumer demand may have been an issue for Atlantic City’s casino operators in summer 2024,” said Jane Bokunewicz, director of the Lloyd Levenson Institute at Stockton University, which studies the Atlantic City gambling industry. Revenue from things other than gambling also underperformed in the third quarter at $511.6 million, down 5% from a year earlier. Among internet-only entities, Caesars Interactive NJ earned $4.8 million, down 7.8%, and Resorts Digital, the former online arm of Resorts casino, earned $1.5 million, down 4.8%.

CNN —Dangerous wildfires are burning on the East and West coasts Monday, with firefighters in New York and New Jersey working to contain a deadly blaze spurred by an ongoing, historic drought – while strong winds in Southern California could fan a destructive fire in Ventura County. Nearly 600 wildfires have burned nearly 7,000 acres in New Jersey and New York since October 1, according to officials. Most of the fires were in New Jersey, where the state’s Forest Fire Service has responded to 537 wildfires. “We were fortunate that the fire started at 9 o’clock in the morning, with daylight,” said Jim Fryhoff, the sheriff of Ventura County. Wind gusts and humidity are helping to fuel wildfires burning across the Northeast. A whopping 27 million people from New York to Massachusetts are under fire alerts Saturday afternoon. American Water, the largest regulated water and wastewater utility company in the U.S., announced Tuesday that it was the target of a “cybersecurity incident.”The New Jersey-based utility company became aware of “unauthorized activity” in their computer networks and systems on Thursday that was determined to be the result of a cyberattack, it said in a statement. American Water also took their customer portal service offline as part of their response, putting a pause on billing "until further notice," they said. Founded in 1886, American Water provides drinking water and wastewater services to more than 14 million people across 14 states and 18 military facilities, according to their website. The company manages more than 500 water and wastewater systems in approximately 1,700 communities, including in California, Illinois, Kentucky, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The investigation into the cyberattack is ongoing "and will take time to complete," American Water said.

New York CNN —A married New Jersey couple that was in a severe accident during an Uber ride can’t sue the company because they and their daughter agreed to arbitration when they accepted the terms of service for a separate Uber Eats order, a court has ruled. Georgia sustained several fractures throughout her body, including cervical, lumbar, spine and rib fractures and other physical injuries that required surgeries and other procedures.
