CNN —It was perhaps fitting that Shohei Ohtani should achieve one of baseball’s most remarkable feats with an out-of-this-world performance. But despite being kept away from the mound, Ohtani has had a phenomenal debut season with the Dodgers. Ohtani smacks his 50th home run of the season, and with it, earns the first 50/50 in MLB history. Megan Briggs/Getty ImagesEven without pitching this season, Ohtani is still the odds-on favorite to win the NL MVP award, potentially the first to do so having played solely as a designated hitter (DH). A betrayal off the fieldAll the while, Ohtani’s record-breaking season on the diamond has come against the backdrop of off-field challenges.

CNN —Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani stole his 49th base of the season on Wednesday night to move to within one steal and two home runs of an unprecedented 50-50 season. “I was hoping for a bad throw because a good throw gets him,” said Roberts after the game, according to MLB.com. Ohtani is also just one home run away from matching the Dodgers franchise record of 49, set by Shawn Green in 2001. Once Knack was replaced with Dodgers debutant Zach Logue, the Marlins struck back with three runs in the fifth. Ten regular season games remain for Ohtani to reach the unprecedented 50-50 mark, and the Dodgers can confirm their ticket to the postseason with a win against the Marlins on Thursday night.

CNN —Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani took another step towards the first ever 50-50 season in Major League Baseball (MLB) history on Tuesday. With 48 home runs and 48 stolen bases, Ohtani is now tied with Adrian Beltré for the second-most homers in a single season in Dodgers history. Duffy recorded 85 XBH and 48 steals in 1894 while playing for the Boston Beaneaters. Ohtani hit a two-run homer in the third inning against the Miami Marlins. Marta Lavandier/APThe Japanese superstar needs just two home runs and two stolen bases to become MLB’s first ever 50-50 player – an accomplishment that would firmly put him in the pantheon of the all-time greats of the sport.

Tens of thousands of spectators every year brave the unpredictable summer weather to watch the contest at the Nathan’s Famous flagship restaurant. The current record for most hot dogs eaten at a competition is 76 hot dogs, held by 16-time champion Joey “Jaws” Chestnut. After agreeing to a sponsorship deal with Impossible Foods, a company that develops plant-based meats and is a competitor to Nathan’s Famous Hot Dogs, Chestnut was barred. MLB games are a major venue for hot dog consumption: In 2020, ballparks sold 19.4 million hot dogs. NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Jim Leyland left his living room in Thornburg, Pennsylvania, and had gone upstairs to lie down, convinced the call to Cooperstown wasn't coming. Hall chairman Jane Forbes Clark was on the line and Leyland had been voted in, two weeks shy of his 79th birthday. Leyland coached in the Tigers minor league system, then started managing with Bristol of the Appalachian Rookie League in 1971. The Pirates sank from there following the departures of Bonds and ace pitcher Doug Drabek as free agents, and Leyland left after Pittsburgh’s fourth straight losing season in 1996. But the Marlins sold off veterans and tumbled to 54-108 in 1998, and Leyland left for the Rockies.

MIAMI (AP) — Kim Ng is leaving the Miami Marlins after three seasons as general manager, Marlins chairman and principal owner Bruce Sherman announced Monday. The Marlins exercised their team option for her to return for the 2024 season, Sherman said in a statement, but Ng declined her mutual option. I wish to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation to the Marlins family and its fans for my time in South Florida. The last full season in which the Marlins made the playoffs was in 2003, when they won the World Series. “We thank Kim for her contributions during her time with our organization and wish her and her family well,” Sherman said.

October 11 - PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia Phillies were in control for the first 14 innings of their National League Division Series against the Atlanta Braves. The final four innings of Game 2 were so calamitous for the Phillies that the series' momentum swung entirely to Atlanta. "As I've said many times, this is a tough team, resilient team," Phillies manager Rob Thomson said Tuesday. "I mean, he's as good as there is in the game," Braves manager Brian Snitker said of Riley. That includes a 2-0 mark against the Braves in last year's NLDS en route to a World Series berth.

But if you are a believer in momentum heading into Game 3 Wednesday, then the Braves just might be the team to beat. The Phillies said all the right things in the clubhouse after Game 2. Nola gave up five hits, walked two and struck out six in six-plus innings against the Braves in a Game 3 NLDS win last season. So we just got to take it game by game.

New York CNN —When the Miami Marlins bested the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday, Kim Ng became the first female general manager to lead a Major League Baseball team into the playoffs. And while the Marlins’ postseason was short lived — ending Wednesday night after a loss to the Philadelphia Phillies — it marked a major milestone for Ng. Her hiring followed 30 years of experience in the MLB, including with the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers, two of the winningest teams in the league. When she joined the Marlins, the team was facing serious struggles, including the loss of big-name players, low attendance and a limited budget. “Kim was the first person I called,” Jeter told the “Today” show in 2021 of Ng’s hiring.
