CNN —Pick one word to describe Republicans and Donald Trump, the focus group moderator asked, and one word to describe Democrats and Kamala Harris. “Donald Trump is a uniquely more popular figure, but what is it about him that makes him that way? Former President Donald Trump gestures during a campaign rally in Waco, Texas, on March 25, 2023. But what Democrats face is much deeper than the usual finger-pointing by a losing campaign or speculation about the next set of presidential primary candidates. It goes beyond easy comments about talking more to the working class when Democrats lost ground among nearly every demographic in the presidential race.

GOP Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas is headed back to Washington after he turned back a challenge from Democratic Rep. Colin Allred, NBC News projects. Cruz was boosted by gains he made among Latino voters in the Lone Star state, according to NBC News exit polls. Cruz, 53, fought back, seeking in the final weeks of the campaign to paint Allred as wanting to allow boys to play in girls sports. In the end, Allred’s campaign spent more than $50 million on ads in the race, just between Labor Day and Election Day, according to AdImpact. Cruz’s campaign spent $26 million in that time, with an additional $23 million spent by the Truth and Courage PAC, a group backing Cruz.

The former president is returning to his hometown on Sunday for a rally in one of New York City’s most iconic landmarks, Madison Square Garden. Harris and Trump have made clear the issues they’re highlighting in the campaign’s last days. That argument illustrates what a Harris administration would look like compared with the threat Harris says Trump poses, the official said. The vice president continued that celebrity-fueled push Friday night in Texas – a rare visit to a state that is not a presidential battleground. The Madison Square Garden rally will be one of the most-covered moments of the race – with media coverage reaching into all seven swing states.

In today’s edition, national political reporter Ben Kamisar breaks down our latest focus group of voters who did not participate in the last election but plan to this time around. Plus, "Meet the Press" moderator Kristen Welker previews Kamala Harris' trip to Texas. Among these voters, Harris gets a boost because they believe she would protect abortion rights, and some have broader hopes that electing the first female president could send a strong message to the country. But maybe more than anything else, Harris’ trip to Texas is noteworthy because of the issue she’ll be emphasizing there: abortion. Our latest NBC News poll shows why abortion is such a critical issue for Harris: It’s the top motivating issue for voters, especially younger women.

CNN —Vice President Kamala Harris will give a speech on reproductive freedom in Texas on Friday, according to a senior Harris campaign official. And Texas was chosen as the location for the rally, campaign officials said, because it’s the epicenter of abortion bans. Before her ascension to the top of the Democratic ticket, Harris was the go-to voice on abortion rights for the then-Biden campaign. The trigger law passed in 2021 took effect after the Supreme Court overturned federal abortion rights in June 2022. While in Houston, Harris will join Democratic Senate nominee Rep. Colin Allred, who seeks to oust incumbent GOP Sen. Ted Cruz, for a get-out-the-vote effort.

And they are long-shot races, especially during a presidential election, when ticket-splitting isn’t as common as it used to be. In Florida and Texas, Democrats are focusing on state abortion bans to try to push beyond their recent losses in those states. Cruz’s campaign spent almost $5 million on ads in September and $4 million in the first 10 days of October. The spending disparity is less stark in Florida, where in September Mucarsel-Powell’s campaign spent $8.6 million and Scott’s campaign spent $2.1 million. In Maryland, the Senate race features a similar dynamic, with the race rated by Cook as “Likely Democrat,” even though Harris is expected to win there easily.

The Texas housing market has cooled after a frenzy of activity during the pandemic. The shift in attitudes is an indicator for the state's housing market, which boomed during the pandemic. Median home prices in Texas have fallen around 7% from their highs in mid-2022, according to data from Redfin. The decline is an outlier compared to the broader US housing market, which is still prices hovering around record highs. But those issues are minor relative to things like economic growth and housing affordability, Fairweather says, which she described as two of the biggest factors that could determine if the Texas housing market picks back up.

To the Editor:Re “Bus After Bus, Texas Changed U.S. Migration” (front page, July 24):Texas did indeed have to bear the brunt of immigrants crossing its border from Mexico, and the rest of the nation might have stepped up to share the Lone Star State’s burden had Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas played the role of statesman rather than partisan gamesman. Instead, he grandstanded by depositing often desperate people in the middle of Northern cities, most of them carefully chosen for being in the hands of Democrats. For this, Mr. Abbott gained what he sought: headlines and cheers. And in the long run, he’ll be recalled in infamy.

And between 2020 and 2023, that seems to have been true of population growth. Celina, Texas, a city about 40 miles north of Dallas, earned the top spot as its population grew by more than 143% between 2020 and 2023. But it's the only Texas city among the 10 U.S. cities and towns that saw the biggest population drops between 2020 and 2023. The state's population has been growing steadily and faster than nearly any other state since 2000, the Census Bureau reports. Despite its position along the Southern border, domestic migration has played a slightly larger role than international migration in Texas' population growth, the agency finds.
