CNN —The Girl Scouts of the USA plans to raise prices, but not for their famous cookies. Membership dues are the Girl Scout’s largest source of revenue, generating $38 million in 2023 from its nearly 2 million total members. You are going to run yourselves out of business.”Bertram was a Girl Scout herself, just like every girl in her family. Part of the problem is that Girl Scout membership has fallen in recent years, leadership said in a video to members in September. GSUSA will continue to provide financial aid to “reduce barriers” to any girl who wants to be a Girl Scout, a spokesperson said.

With anti-immigrant rhetoric on the rise and a contentious election ahead, some donors see the Girl Scouts as wading too readily into politically controversial waters. “It’s our job.”While Troop 6000 has found plenty of sympathetic supporters, “there are some donors who would prefer their dollars go elsewhere,” says Maskara. So, when the mayor’s office floated the idea of starting a troop at the Midtown shelter, the Girl Scouts were ready. The Girl Scouts have not been immune to the backlash, nor is it the first time they’ve shouldered criticism from conservative donors. While Troop 6000 has not been deterred, Maskara says that many of her peers in the nonprofit world have been fearful to publicly support newcomers.

My mom and my aunt are estranged, but I've been close with my aunt since I was young. That year my aunt and I decided to start writing letters since I didn't have my own phone. I've never known exactly why my mom and aunt don't talkWhen I asked my mom why we didn't see her, she'd vaguely reply, "She was always kind of mean to me," or, "We just don't." As my aunt and I began to speak more, I gathered breadcrumbs of what happened between her and my mom. After graduating from Catholic school, my mom abandoned religion, yet my aunt consistently attends church.

Opinion | A Dispatch From the Muslim Girl Scouts of Astoria

At a meeting of the Muslim Girl Scouts of Astoria last week, a young woman bounded into the room, asking whether her fellow scouts had secured tickets to an Olivia Rodrigo concert. “It’s no conflict at all,” Ms. Rayan told me of Islam and the Girl Scouts. “You want a strong Muslim American girl.”At the Girl Scouts meeting, Amira and her friends discussed their plans to protest the war in Gaza. In 1948, Ms. Rayan told me, her grandfather lost his home and land in Jaffa to the state of Israel. Ms. Rayan said those killed in her family included six cousins and their children, who were as young as 2.

Why nursing schools are turning away thousands of applicantsAt a time when registered nurses are going on strike to protest staffing shortages, thousands of applicants who want to enter or advance in the profession are being turned away from nursing schools, reports CNN’s Tami Luhby. New York CNN —The Girl Scouts are discontinuing a popular cookie just a year after its debut sparked a frenzy. Raspberry Rally won’t be sold this upcoming cookie-sales season, which runs January to April 2024, Girl Scouts of the USA has announced. “While Raspberry Rally was extremely popular last year, we are taking a pause this season to prioritize supplying our classic varieties,” the Girl Scouts of the USA said in a statement to CNN. But Girl Scouts learned last year that there is a market for higher-priced cookies, thanks to the Raspberry Rally debacle. The Rallies changed hands several times higher than their listed price, to the likely frustration of the Girl Scouts leadership.

It’s too soon to tell, but there are alarm bells ringing that indicate investors should be — and are — on edge. Stocks rebounded this year after a bruising 2022, as artificial intelligence excitement led investors to fuel a powerful tech-driven surge. While shares of tech behemoths have led the market’s surge this year, the rally had begun to broaden out in early summer. High yields often mean bad news for stocks, since investors tend to gravitate toward virtually risk-free Treasury bonds when they offer high returns over stocks. Spending in the second quarter grew at its weakest pace since the first quarter of 2022, when it was flat.

New York CNN —Girl Scout cookies are getting more expensive. But now the higher price will apply to other cookies that the troops sell, including the more classic varieties. Girl Scout cookie prices have been rising from $5 to $6. “Each of our 111 Girl Scout councils sets local Girl Scout Cookie prices based on several factors,” a spokesperson for Girl Scouts of the USA told CNN. But Girl Scouts learned last year that there is a market for higher-priced cookies, thanks to the Raspberry Rally debacle.

Maeve DuVally worked in communications at Goldman Sachs when she came out to colleagues as transgender in 2019. To make your workplace more welcoming for transgender people, show kindness and don't be afraid to ask questions. I'm a frequent public speaker, and inevitably one of the questions I get asked is what can be done to make workplaces more welcoming for transgender people. When I came out in 2019 at Goldman Sachs, I was wildly excited, but I was also petrified. Armed with additional information, you might then ask more specifically and in a more educated way how you could help.

Realize Your Beauty isn’t packed with aspiring Audra McDonalds, Billy Porters and Sutton Fosters. “It’s not theater kids, necessarily,” Merkl said over coffee a few days before camp began. “Some of the kids love theater. Some of them are totally new to the theater, but their parents think that they could benefit from this. We are doing theater, but this is not a camp for them to come and learn Shakespeare.”Elise Arndt, a veteran theater camp counselor who flew in from Orange County, Calif., said: “Not all of them are going to be gung-ho theater people.

Sheryl Sandberg and her Lean In organization are rolling out a new program for girls ages 11-15, designed to encourage girls to set leadership goals, navigate risk, and identify and challenge bias. Sandberg says she was inspired to create this new initiative because the adult Lean In community is thriving, with 80,000 circles in 183 countries, growing faster than ever before. "Girls in high school are twice as likely as boys to think that having any leadership role will make them be called 'bossy.' "We really want girls to embrace and lean into their superpowers. We want girls to know that they're going to face stereotypes that there's going to be headwinds.

Opinion: The surprising antidote to burnout
  + stars: | 2023-05-16 | by ( Opinion Tess Taylor | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
Community feels good. Activism feels good. Cultivating feels good. Sometimes we go out and work in community because we want to alter and renew our sense of what is possible. Last year, author Laura Vanderkam wrote in The New York Times that quitting is not the answer to burnout.
It’s important for every scout — but perhaps especially for Troop 6000, which is comprised entirely of girls who are experiencing homelessness or living in shelters. Unlike most Girl Scouts, Troop 6000’s cookie sale covers all fees for the girls including trips, summer camps and other activities. The funds help the troop hold Girl Scouts activities, as well as launch programs like the Troop 6000 Transition Initiative to support scouts and their families as they transition to permanent housing. So far, 100 migrant girls have joined Girl Scouts Troop 6000. Troop 6000 offers women a chance to lead in their community, by taking on volunteer roles within their shelters’ troops.
Why Barnes & Noble Is Copying Local Bookstores It Once Threatened Barnes & Noble grew into a bookselling powerhouse thanks in part to the rapid expansion of its cookie-cutter retail locations. After years of struggling against e-commerce, it’s adopted a local strategy, empowering individual stores to decide on inventory and displays. Photo illustration: Ryan Trefes
New York CNN —For decades, Girl Scouts has used cookie sales to raise funds and teach scouts about entrepreneurship. “Right now we are focused on ensuring all Girl Scouts have a successful Cookie Season,” Girl Scouts USA told CNN in a statement, adding that it is also focused on optimizing its operations “in real-time, and [capturing] learnings that will inform our strategy going into future seasons.”But for the scouts, those learnings have been hard-won. That meant shoppers could order it themselves, though Girl Scouts encouraged them to ask scouts to place the orders. Plus, Girl Scouts built a lot of hype with the limited-time offer, creating a sense of urgency, Esper noted. Francine Orr/Los Angeles Times/Getty ImagesYet as customers clamored for the cookie, scouts and their parents learned there was no chance of increasing supply by the end of the cookie season in April.
This is the way the Girl Scout cookie crumbles. The inventory woes have caused a shortage of some cookie flavors that have sent Girl Scout cookie resale prices skyrocketing. Boxes of Girl Scout cookies typically go for $5 a pop. "We are extremely disappointed that LBB is again having challenges with managing their production," a Girl Scouts spokesperson told CNBC. The other 25% of Girl Scout councils are supplied by ABC Bakers, a smaller baking company that the Girl Scouts say has not had the same production issues as LBB.
When I first read about the new Girl Scout cookie flavor that was flying off digital shelves and selling for hundreds of dollars on eBay, I was skeptical. I like Girl Scout cookies as much as the next guy — my favorites are Trefoils and Lemon-Ups — but I couldn't imagine myself visiting the resale market to get my hands on a box. They're described as a "thin, crispy cookie infused with raspberry flavor, dipped in chocolaty coating." After tasting the Rallys for the first time, it was pretty evident why the Girl Scouts haven't been able to keep it in stock. The Girl Scouts organization itself has released a statement criticizing resellers for "looking to make a profit off of the name without supporting our mission and the largest girl-led entrepreneurship program in the world."
New York CNN —The Raspberry Rally Girl Scouts cookie, a raspberry-flavored version of the beloved Thin Mint, was always supposed to be a limited edition item. The new Girl Scouts cookie sold out in hours. But profits from the resale market don’t go to Girl Scouts, which said it was “disappointed” that the products are now available through other vendors. “Girl Scouts of the USA, your local Girl Scout council, and our licensed cookie bakers cannot guarantee the freshness or integrity of cookies bought through unauthorized sites.” To buy cookies from Girl Scouts directly, customers should use the Cooke Finder on the Scouts’ website, Girl Scouts said. “We strongly support the entrepreneurial spirit of hardworking local Girl Scout troops and encourage cookie-seekers to also support their local Girl Scouts,” eBay said in a statement to CNN.
Girl Scout Raspberry Rally cookies are so in-demand that resellers are listing boxes on eBay at a significant upcharge. A Girl Scouts spokesperson did not provide information about a possible restock. Girl Scout Raspberry Rally cookies on eBay. And while it remains unclear if local troops will receive more boxes of Raspberry Rallys, the Girl Scouts spokesperson encouraged fans to keep buying. "Participating in the Girl Scout Cookie Program gives girls the opportunity to not only learn the valuable life skills of goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics, but to gain confidence and make new lifelong friends."
I put my taste buds to the test to determine the ultimate ranking, from worst to best, of Girl Scout cookies. I tried 12 flavors that are all available this year. Representatives from the organization told me that the cookie season generally takes place from January to April, depending on the local market and Girl Scout council decisions (some start in December). I reviewed the cookies to help you decide which ones are worth buying and which are worth skipping. But after tasting these 12 flavors available this year, I might have a tougher time deciding which cookie to reach for.
“I was just a mom taking my daughter to see a Christmas show,” she told NBC New York. It’s un-American to do this.”The Rockettes perform at Radio City Music Hall in New York in 2019. The spokesperson added that a sign outside Radio City Music Hall informs visitors that facial recognition technology is among the security measures it has in place. The company spokesperson called its policy “straightforward” and said attorneys at firms pursuing litigation against it are welcome at its venues once the litigation is resolved. New York court records show that there are more than 20 active lawsuits pending against MSG Entertainment and its properties in the state.

Kelly Conlon and her daughter came to New York City the weekend after Thanksgiving as part of a Girl Scout field trip to Radio City Music Hall to see the Christmas Spectacular show. But while her daughter, other members of the Girl Scout troop and their mothers got to go enjoy the show, Conlon wasn't allowed to do so. They had identified and zeroed in on her, as security guards approached her right as he got into the lobby. "I was just a mom taking my daughter to see a Christmas show," Conlon told the I-Team.
Billionaire philanthropist MacKenzie Scott gave nearly $2 billion to 343 organizations since 2019. In the last 7 months, Scott gave money to organizations supporting people from underserved communities. With this addition, she has now given away $14.5 billion of her fortune since signing the Giving Pledge. In a blog post on Monday, Scott said in the last seven months, she gave nearly $2 billion to 343 organizations supporting people from underserved communities. Since signing the pledge, Scott has become one of the leading philanthropists in the US.
On Tuesday, the Girl Scouts of the USA announced a $84.5 million gift from the billionaire, the biggest donation from a single benefactor in the organization's history. The funds will also "future-proof its facilities," making the Girl Scouts' buildings more climate resilient and accessible to visitors, the announcement said. Girl Scouts of the USA didn't immediately respond to CNBC Make It's request for clarification. The donation will be divided between Girl Scouts of the USA and 29 local councils selected by Scott herself, the organization said. Philanthropic contributions are increasingly important, as many people incorrectly assume the Girl Scouts raise enough money to fund itself from cookie sales alone, Garcia-Hernandez said.
