An eighth-inning rally capped by sacrifice flies by second baseman Gavin Lux and outfielder Mookie Betts put the Dodgers in front. This title, the eighth in franchise history, can stand beside the Dodgers’ trophy from the pandemic-shortened season in 2020. The precedent feels preposterous until you consider the current Dodgers who will one day join them in the Hall of Fame. “Mark,” he told Freeman, “wants to win really bad.” That desire became clear to Ohtani when he met with the Dodgers. After Freeman launched his grand, Gibsonian walkoff in Game 1 against the Yankees, the Dodgers got the job done.

In Tuesday's 9th inning of the Padres-Astros game, Altuve appeared to foul a ball off his left foot. However, umpires ruled the ball never hit his foot and Altuve was subsequently thrown out at first base. The Padres and Astros each had costly wild pitches, great defensive plays, clutch hits and plenty of frustration with the umpires. Replays seemed to show the ball missed Profar, Profar appeared to be upset that he wouldn’t have the chance to bat and the Astros bench couldn’t believe the call. As the umpires walked off the field, there was plenty of chirping and chatter directed at them by both teams.

Major League Baseball permanently banned San Diego Padres infielder Tucupita Marcano on Tuesday for placing hundreds of bets on baseball, including wagers on the Pittsburgh Pirates when he was a member of the team last season. MLB’s Department of Investigations found Marcano placed 387 baseball bets, including 231 MLB-related bets, through a legal sportsbook in 2022 and 2023, the league said. The Department of Investigations found all four players placed MLB-related bets while in the minors. MLB said a legal sports betting operator informed the league in March that it had “identified past baseball betting activity” from accounts connected to multiple players. He placed 29 baseball bets, including 28 MLB-related bets and one parlay bet on college baseball games in 2021 and 2022, the league said.

CNN —Major League Baseball fans had an unexpected buzz on Tuesday after a swarm of bees delayed the Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Los Angeles Dodgers game for around two hours. With no end in sight to the snafu, the call went out to bee wrangler Matt Hilton, who was summoned from his son’s baseball game to the big leagues to tackle the problem. On the day they held their first official workout, the Baltimore Orioles announced pitcher Kyle Bradish will open the season on the injured list with a sprained ulnar collateral ligament. Orioles general manager Mike Elias said Bradish received a platelet-rich plasma injection to treat the injury. “He’s going to start his throwing progression tomorrow, but that progression is going to be something that takes some time. The real world falls far short of a meritocracy, of course. In the wider world, I think, it would be good to squeeze more of the randomness out of who succeeds, getting closer to true meritocracy. The team owners want to expand the playoffs to 14 teams, but the players’ union has resisted. An inferior team can win a playoff series, or even more than one series, if the “game of inches” breaks its way. The Diamondbacks being a case in point, at least until they bombed out in the World Series, losing the best-of-seven competition after five games.
