A Chicago man has been charged with 14 felonies after allegedly shooting a Jewish man who was on his way to a local synagogue. But some community leaders are questioning why hate crime charges have not been filed. Snelling said that there wasn't enough evidence to add hate crime charges to the list but said it remained a possibility. "A man wearing the kippah as he walked to synagogue was shot and this has just escalated our anxieties." But I think it’s equally important to understand that whether or not there is a hate crime charge, that’s a technicality.

Comparisons were drawn to the 1968 Chicago convention, when national unrest during the civil rights movement and over the Vietnam War sowed an atmosphere of violence and chaos. Chicago Police Department officers were trained to deploy a disciplined and patient approach that focused on protecting free speech and allowing people to lawfully protest, a department official said. “The department trained more than a year for this,” a Chicago Police Department official who was not authorized to speak publicly told NBC News. “We are trying to get away from the old image of the Chicago Police Department,” the official said. AP —Firefighters found a dead woman entangled in machinery Thursday in a non-public baggage-processing area at O’Hare International Airport in Chicago. Larry Langford, a spokesperson for the Chicago Fire Department, said firefighters were called to the airport around 7:45 a.m. for a report of a person pinned in machinery used to move baggage. He said they discovered the woman entangled in a conveyer belt system in a baggage room. The baggage room wasn’t publicly accessible, Langford said, and it’s not clear how she found her way into it. After checking with the police department about the timing, Langford said he was told surveillance footage shows the woman walking in the baggage room at 2:27 a.m.

According to an NBC News review of police hiring laws in Illinois, Grayson’s hiring did not appear to have violated state or local police hiring policies. And an NBC News review of hiring practices around the country shows that there is a patchwork of hiring standards that vary from state to state and from community to community. Experts say the hiring standards in many small law enforcement agencies are often lower than those of large city agencies. In Illinois, in addition to its state law, city councils and county commissions can also set their own stricter hiring rules. Using the California hiring standards as a model, Guller tells his clients to send seasoned investigators out to interview a person’s former romantic partners, neighbors, employers and even patrons at their favorite bars.

"Peaceful protests like this have taken place at U-M commencement ceremonies for decades," Mastony said in a statement. Contrasting views over Israel's war in Gaza have erupted, sometimes violently, across U.S. campuses over the last couple of weeks. Many of the schools, including Columbia University in New York City, have called in police to quell the protests. Police have so far arrested over 2,000 protesters at colleges around the country.

Across the country, police bodycam footage has played an increasing role in raising awareness and understanding about officer-involved shootings. A Chicago police officer gives Dexter Reed several commands before gunfire breaks out. Other bodycam videos show at least two other officers firing toward Reed from across the street in the residential neighborhood. “Upon stopping Mr. Reed, multiple officers surrounded his vehicle while giving verbal commands. “Review of video footage and initial reports appears to confirm that Mr. Reed fired first, striking the officer and four officers returned fire,” the office said.

CNN —A United Airlines Boeing 767 plane lost its emergency evacuation slide in mid-air Monday – and it ended up in the backyard of a home near Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport, officials and a witness said. When he got to the house, he dragged the slide from his backyard to the front of the home. [1/4] Migrants, without a place to stay upon arrival in the city, seek safe shelter at the District 12 station of the Chicago Police Department in Chicago, Illinois, U.S. May 17, 2023. Some migrants seeking a safe place to sleep have turned to police stations. Earlier this month, Texas Governor Greg Abbott, a Republican, resumed a campaign of busing migrants to Democratic strongholds further north, including Chicago and New York City. The busing aims to alleviate pressure on border cities and call attention to what Abbott says were overly lenient policies by Biden's Democratic administration. New York City Mayor Eric Adams, a Democrat, has called on the Biden administration to provide more funding to cities receiving recently arrived migrants.
Illustration by Gene KimAs weed becomes legal in more states, how and if travelers can bring their stash on board remains up in the air. Traveling between states where marijuana is legal in both the origin and destination may sound straight-forward, but with overlapping jurisdictions and hard-to-enforce guidelines, it gets complicated. Under federal law, the possession and sale of marijuana is illegal. Despite President Joe Biden's recent pardons for anyone convicted of a federal crime for simple possession and his directive to review how marijuana is scheduled under federal law, marijuana is still classified as a Schedule I substance. And even though airports are locally owned and operated, air travel still falls under federal law.

JB and I are not on speaking terms these days," said Ken Griffin, the billionaire hedge-fund manager, referring to JB Pritzker, the Democratic governor of Illinois. As Florida rolled back pandemic restrictions more quickly than Chicago, even more Citadel employees migrated south. Ken Griffin's hedge fund has had a run of eye-popping returns since 2020. Others worry that it gives Griffin's hedge fund an unfair advantage. Hundreds of Citadel employees, partners, and families gathered at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando Florida.
A video posted to TikTok showed a woman with a baby telling a flight attendant: "I will kill you." The video, which has gone viral on TikTok, shows the woman in a physical confrontation with a flight attendant while holding a child on her hip. It's unclear what preceded the video, but the woman can be heard saying: "I will kill you. The flight attendant keeps saying "ma'am" and another one tells the woman she needs to take her seat, but the woman continues to push herself down the aisle. The person who posted the video, another passenger on United Airlines flight 476, gave more details in a follow-up video.
A United flight attendant was taken to a hospital after an altercation with an unruly passenger. The Chicago Police Department told Insider it responded to reports of "a disturbance that had occurred on a plane." "A disruptive customer on a flight from San Francisco to Chicago was removed by law enforcement upon landing on Sunday, and one member of the flight attendant crew was taken to a hospital for evaluation," the spokesperson said. According to Twitter account @WindyCityWxMan, which shares real-time police scanner alerts, three ambulances were specifically requested for the flight attendant, the passenger, and the passenger's child.
Nov 10 (Reuters) - Chicago police are investigating a noose that was found at the construction site of the Obama Presidential Center on Thursday, an act the Illinois governor condemned as a symbol of racist hatred. The incident led to a temporary halt in construction, the Chicago Tribune reported, citing the construction consortium that is building the center. The noose was reported to police by the Lakeside Alliance, a construction team of Black-owned companies that is building the Obama Presidential Center, which will be a museum and public gathering space commemorating Barack and Michelle Obama, the first African-American president and first lady. The Lakeside Alliance is offering a $100,000 reward to help find those responsible, the Chicago Tribune reported, citing an alliance statement. Construction on the site began in 2021 and the center is due to open in 2025.
