The 8-year-old Pekingese from Oregon was crowned the World’s Ugliest Dog on Friday, confirming that when the looks are, well, lacking, there’s something to be said for persistence. “His victory is a testament to his undeniable charm and resilience,” said a statement released by the competition following Wild Thang’s big win. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Wild Thang’s life got off to a difficult start, according to his biography (yes, he has one). As a puppy, he contracted distemper, an infectious disease caused by a virus that attacks dogs’ respiratory, gastrointestinal and nervous systems. He barely survived, and his biography notes that Wild Thang was left permanently affected by the disease: “His teeth did not grow in, causing his tongue to stay out and his right front leg paddles 24/7.”

Parliament approved the higher tax rate as part of a global tax reform, and said the government would work on specific incentives in 2024. "The National Assembly is not issuing a separate resolution on investment incentives at this time," said Le Quang Manh, head of the assembly's financial commission. Vietnam's corporate income tax is already set at 20%, but it has offered for years much lower effective rates to large foreign investors. The Korean Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam said members were concerned about the new tax rate, but "none have expressed their intention to alter their investment in Vietnam". However, Thang Vu, a tax expert at consultancy Dezan Shira, said Vietnam could see a drop in foreign investment if it did not offer "adequate alternative economic benefits" to those affected by the new tax.

Read Your Way Around the World is a series exploring the globe through books. Hanoi has always been a city of tales and legends. Cradled by the silky Red River, Hanoi is also a city of loss and survival: It was destroyed time and time again during the French Indochina War, then the Vietnam War, when thousands of tons of bombs were dropped onto the city. But once in Hanoi, you will feel the energy of a city that constantly renews itself. If you prefer to get to know Hanoi via fiction, “Dumb Luck,” by Vu Trong Phung — a sarcastic novel set in Hanoi during the colonial period — is considered a classic of Vietnamese literature.

WASHINGTON, April 13 (Reuters) - Hours ahead of a visit to Hanoi by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, the United States on Thursday condemned Vietnam's jailing of a prominent political activist and said ties could only reach their full potential if the country improved its human rights record. Thang participated in environmental and anti-China protests, voiced support for jailed activists, and blogged about socio-political issues, according to his social media accounts. Vietnamese authorities have convicted at least 163 people since 2018 for exercising their rights to freedom of expression or association under "vague or over-broad laws that criminalize protesting or criticizing the government", according to Human Rights Watch. In a statement on Thursday, Human Rights Watch called on Blinken, who is due in Hanoi on Friday, to "publicly and privately urge Vietnam’s leadership to end its systemic abuse of freedom of expression, association, and peaceful assembly." April 12 (Reuters) - YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul and ex-UFC fighter Nate Diaz will meet in a boxing match on Aug. 5 in Dallas, organisers said on Wednesday. Diaz is an accomplished boxer who competed in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) until last year, where he twice fought former UFC champion Conor McGregor, while Paul boasts 20 million YouTube subscribers and has competed in seven professional fights since 2019. I'm the king of combat sports and then I'm headed back to get my UFC belts," Diaz was quoted as saying by Paul's promotion company Most Valuable Promotions. Paul, 26, will return to action after suffering the first loss of his boxing career at the hands of Tommy Fury in February. "My last fight didn't end the way I wanted, but the result was the best thing that could have happened to my professional boxing aspirations," Paul said.
