A man charged with fraud for claiming to own a storied Manhattan hotel where he had been living rent-free for years has been found unfit to stand trial, prosecutors said Wednesday. Finally, we convinced him to go seek treatment,’” Barreto told The Associated Press on Wednesday. They say he forged a deed to the New Yorker Hotel purporting to transfer ownership of the entire building to him. Because I’m not being treated as a criminal but I’m treated like a nutjob,” Barreto told the AP. But the New Yorker closed as a hotel in 1972 and was used for years for church purposes before part of the building reopened as a hotel in 1994.

Tesla faces a new investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, or NHTSA, concerning issues with its “Full Self-Driving” systems, and whether they are safe to use in fog, glaring sun or other “reduced roadway visibility conditions.”The probe follows an incident in which a Tesla driver who had been using FSD struck and killed a pedestrian, and other FSD-involved collisions during reduced roadway visibility conditions. FSD, which the company now refers to as a “partial driving automation system,” is Tesla’s paid, premium driver assistance option. But Tesla has offered it to all drivers for a monthlong free trial in the U.S., previously. The U.S. federal vehicle safety regulator tracks collisions involving the use of automakers’ advanced driver assistance systems, like Tesla’s Autopilot or FSD. As of Oct. 1, 2024, the NHTSA had tracked 1,399 incidents in which Tesla’s driver assistance systems were engaged within 30 seconds of the collision, and 31 of those had resulted in fatalities.

Elon Musk’s empire of misinformation

New York CNN —At any Tesla event, you have to go in expecting a good amount of smoke and mirrors. This is the company run by Elon Musk, after all — its self-anointed Technoking who’s made overpromising and underdelivering a theme of his career. ICYMI: The robotaxis, Tesla’s fully driverless vehicles that it hopes to put into service next year, were the main event. But Musk’s reality distortion field is something else entirely — hardly limited to overly optimistic timetables or pie-in-the-sky projections for Tesla’s delivery schedule. In a twist, though, X dropped Unilever from the lawsuit on Friday.

GM's electric vehicles got access to Tesla Superchargers last month. AdvertisementFor the better part of a week, I was the lone Chevy at my local Tesla Superchargers. Before I could offer to help, a flock of Tesla owners amassed to troubleshoot with him. Access to Elon Musk's charging network is the latest improvement GM has made to charging access for electric vehicle owners. For a long time, the Supercharger network was a selling point for EV shoppers worried about range anxiety.

Analysts are expecting Elon Musk's automaker to report about 463,310 deliveries, according to estimates compiled by FactSet StreetAccount. Tesla reported deliveries of 435,059 and production of 430,488 vehicles for the same period a year ago, before it was selling the Cybertruck. More recently, Tesla reported deliveries of 443,956 and production of 410,831 vehicles for the second quarter of 2024. Goldman Sachs last week said it expects Tesla deliveries and production "to come in-line with consensus, largely driven by the strength in the China market." Canada already imposes 6.1% tariff on EVs manufactured in China and imported into Canada, the government said on Monday. The country will also put a 25% tariff on China-made steel and aluminum imports, effective Oct. 15. China is the third-largest country for steel imports into Canada, according to the Canadian Steel Producers Association. Canada's EV, steel and aluminum industries face "unfair competition" and trade practices from China, the government's finance department said. The EU also hit China-made EVs with higher tariffs in July, though it slashed some of the planned tariffs on China-made Tesla EVs as well as other Chinese EV makers last week.

The company's sales team has been struggling to adapt to a much different market, according to 14 current and former employees from Tesla's sales division in North America. The carmaker is also attempting to fix a spate of bad publicity surrounding its CEO, Elon Musk — all with little in the way of advertising initiatives or traditional sales strategies. The electric-car maker made its mark by breaking industry standards with its ad-free, direct-to-consumer sales model. Now, some of Tesla's sales staff believe it's time for the company to begin acting like a traditional automaker. Musk has been vague about when a new, more economically priced Tesla model would hit the market, saying only that it could happen in 2025.

As Tesla CEO Elon Musk continues to make lofty promises about his company's future in autonomous driving and robotics, investors keep watching profit margins deteriorate. It's the fourth straight quarter of shrinkage. The company reported just $1.48 billion in net income on revenue of $25.5 billion, which included $890 million in regulatory credits. "Affordability remains top of mind for customers," said Vaibhav Taneja, Tesla's chief accounting officer, on the company's earnings call. Tesla began offering a five-year, zero interest loan offer to spur sales of its EVs in China in April.

New York CNN —At first glance Elon Musk and Donald Trump wouldn’t seem to be natural allies. Musk has given money to candidates from both parties in the past, including $5,000 to Barack Obama in April of 2011. Musk quit two White House business councils he served on early in 2017 after Trump announced America would withdraw from Paris climate accord. But for the last several years Musk has repeatedly shown support for Trump – or opposition to President Joe Biden. Musk recently tweeted the EV subsidies passed under Biden actually helped its rivals more than Tesla.

Read previewTesla spent around $2 million on lidar, a technology used in EVs that Elon Musk has previously referred to as a "fool's errand" and that any carmakers relying on it are "doomed." But according to a recent earnings report from lidar manufacturer Luminar, Tesla was its largest customer last quarter and "comprised more than 10%" of its revenue during the period. The CEO said Tesla EVs only rely on camera-based vision systems for driver-assist features. The Tesla CEO said he personally ran a project at SpaceX to create lidar sensors to help navigation. Last year, Tesla recalled over 2 million vehicles after regulators said its Autopilot system didn't protect enough against drivers misusing it.

Since the recall, at least 20 Tesla vehicles have been involved in crashes in which the system was thought to be in use, according to a filing on the NHTSA's website. The "recall remedy" probe follows a three-year investigation by the agency that found safety issues with Tesla Autopilot contributed to at least 467 collisions and 14 deaths from January 2018 through August 2023. The NHTSA is seeking detailed crash data from the electric vehicle maker since the agency issued the recall update on Autopilot, including data and video stored in or streamed from its cars and retained by the company. The company hasn't disclosed how many jobs in its Autopilot and vehicle-safety engineering teams may have been cut. For about a decade, CEO Elon Musk has been promising that Tesla is on the cusp of a self-driving breakthrough.

Tesla shares could cool following Monday's rally as obstacles remain to achieving full self-driving technology in China, according to Goldman Sachs. But Goldman analyst Mark Delaney has a $175 price target, which implies a 9.8% downside from the stock's last closing price. "Importantly, Tesla will also need to navigate government rules on data access, localization, and AI which could complicate technology sharing within/outside of China." Tesla shares opened down more than 3% on Tuesday. Despite Monday's rally, Tesla stock is still down almost 22% in 2024 as the company contends with sales challenges.

The Toyota RAV4 SUV is one of the more popular hybrids on dealer lots. Among American brands, Ford notched a 31.5% increase in hybrid sales, as these vehicles lured more new customers to the Blue Oval.

One owner even said they'd been warned when the truck was delivered that it could rust in the rain. "The advisor specifically mentioned the Cybertrucks develop orange rust marks in the rain and that required the vehicle to be buffed out," a member of the Cybertruck Owners Club forum wrote. Stainless is reactive and free iron that sits on it will rust," the Cybertruck engineer said. Demaree said the latter method appeared to do the trick but advised Cybertruck owners to be careful using the polish on the truck. But he ran into some issues along the way — including difficulties with charging and a glitch in Tesla's infotainment system. He also said that closing the tonneau, the cover that spans the back of the truck, helped improve the Cybertruck's range. But despite the hiccups along the way, Wang enjoyed the experience, especially the spacious cabin and comfort of the vehicle. "It's a fantastic truck," Wang said.
