Part of the reason is due to a tax credit program that the Cybertruck has been largely left out of. Tesla is offering the Cybertruck for lease a year after the EV company made its first deliveries to customers. However, leasing an EV offers buyers another way to take advantage of the tax credit program without meeting every requirement. Through what's known as a "leasing loophole," dealerships can receive the tax credit and choose to pass those savings on to the buyer or lessee. But Tesla's Cybertruck has largely been left out of the federal incentive program.

The owners say they're huge Tesla fans, and want to one day cook pizza for Elon Musk. AdvertisementA pizzeria in New Jersey has transformed two Cybertrucks into pizza trucks, using one of the Tesla vehicle's most futuristic features to cook pizzas on the go. They wanted new vehicles to relieve the strain on their gasoline pizza truck, which the two partners say was frequently booked months in advance. Now, they say they are facing a huge wave of demand for their Cybertruck pizza trucks, which they've modified to cook pizzas at parties and events. Like other electric vehicles, including the Ford F-150 Lightning, the Cybertruck has bidirectional charging, allowing it to become a mobile power source for appliances and even other electric vehicles.

But recent sales data from the auto-industry tracker Cox Automotive is worth examining ahead of Tesla's results on Wednesday. Tesla sold almost 17,000 Cybertrucks in the third quarter, Cox estimated, making it the third-most-popular EV in the US during the period. That's more than Ford's F-150 Lightning, Rivian's R1T, and Chevy's Silverado EV, Cox data shows. General Motors reported surprisingly solid results earlier this week and highlighted strong EV sales. Related storiesSome of this recent EV strength has been driven by lease incentives, which are available in the US to more buyers.

Elon Musk's $56 billion pay package is "outrageous," according to longtime Tesla investor Ross Gerber. Investors are voting on Musk's pay package for the second time on Thursday, after previously approving it in 2018. "The reason the pay package was voted down is because the board of directors at Tesla is an absent board. I just think that they're just creating more problems, and Elon and his board should work on a fair pay package," Gerber said. I'd love to go to my own company and negotiate my own pay package with myself."
