The Appalachian Trail extends for almost 2,200 miles across 14 states – from Springer Mountain in Georgia to Mount Katahdin in Maine. Portions of the trail in North Carolina’s Pisgah National Forest suffered the most severe damage and remain closed. Towns and businesses need the trail’s trafficThe Appalachian Trail is more than a footpath for many people. Every year thousands of people attempt to hike the entire trail or “thru-hike” it, and about 3 million people visit portions of the trail, according to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. The total cost of the repairs along the trail remains unclear while officials continue assessing the full extent of the wreckage, the Appalachian Trail Conservancy said.

CNN —Lucy, a fossilized skeleton unearthed 50 years ago this month, transformed scientists’ understanding of human evolution. While there are now fossil hominins twice as old as Lucy, she remains a paleoanthropological rock star. Made up of 47 bones from the same individual, she was the oldest known and the most complete skeleton of an early human ancestor when she was found. The fossilized remains of Lucy, discovered on November 24, 1974, made up the most complete skeleton of an early human ancestor when she was found. Business Insider spoke to three residency and citizenship consultancies about what they heard in the 48 hours after the election was called. The inaugural test launch of a Starship and Super Heavy — called an integrated test flight — took off in April 2023. The last test launch — the fourth of SpaceX’s integrated test flight campaign — took off in June. The concept animation above simulates how a successful catch of the Super Heavy rocket by Mechazilla could play out. On the fifth test flight, the upper Starship spacecraft will once again attempt to land upright in a controlled maneuver over the ocean. For example, SpaceX must figure out how to refuel a Starship spacecraft while it’s stationed in orbit.

Those two events are the kind of thing that, in normal times, are tracked mostly by economists and Wall Street types. For former President Donald Trump and the Republicans, the narrative is simple: Anything bad you’re feeling about inflation or the job market? Harris entered the race trailing Trump on a range of issues, including the economy. If that were the whole story, Trump might have a harder time disparaging Harris’ and President Joe Biden’s economic record. If the data doesn’t behave, however, then jobs — not inflation — may become the key economic narrative that Harris and Trump will start talking about in their stump speeches.

At least, that’s what the designers Tyson Strang and Tatiana Baibabaeva wanted to do when they moved to Sencelles, Majorca, in 2020. The pair, who met in Kyrgyzstan two decades ago, had previously lived for 15 years in New York City, where in 2017 they founded the ceramics line Terra Coll Home. Before turning to pottery, Baibabaeva, 38, had worked in fashion and Strang, 45, had been a teacher; when they relocated to Spain, they fully merged their creative, personal and professional lives, raising two children together, developing a rustic-minded interiors business and even sharing an email address, from which they explain, “For us, ‘rustic design’ means unifying the interior of a space with its landscape by using the raw materials from the surrounding land as the primary construction and design elements.”

A tanker carrying 1.4 million liters of industrial fuel capsized off the coast of Philippines, leading to one casualty and a vast oil spill, local authorities said Thursday. The vessel had departed Limay and was bound for fellow Philippines' port of Iloilo, according to data from MarineTraffic.com. The Coast Guard said it is now addressing the oil spill and intends to finish siphoning the fuel from the sunken tanker to prevent further spreading within seven days. The Philippine Coast Guard Aviation Command separately alerted that it had deployed air assets on a search-and-rescue mission to the sunken tanker. The Philippines-flagged tanker MT Princess Empress suffered engine troubles in rough seas and sank with its load of 800,000 litres of industrial fuel oil off the central Oriental Mindoro province.

A worsening macroeconomic climate and the collapse of industry giants such as FTX and Terra have weighed on bitcoin's price this year. STR | Nurphoto via Getty ImagesBitcoin's price slumped to around $57,000 apiece Thursday, hitting a two-month low after the U.S. Federal Reserve released minutes from its June meeting indicating the central bank isn't yet ready to cut interest rates. Since then, bitcoin has pared losses somewhat and was trading at $57,932.57, down 3.4% as of 5:05 p.m. London time. Higher interest rates are typically less favorable for bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies as it dampens investor risk appetite. ETFs allow investors to buy a product that tracks the price of bitcoin without owning the underlying cryptocurrency.

When Liberty Tower went up for sale in Manhattan’s financial district in 1978, there was only one bidder for the 33-story skyscraper. The building was dated and dilapidated, and even though rent had plunged to $5 a square foot, it was two-thirds vacant. New York City itself had tumbled into a downward spiral after a severe fiscal crisis and a deep recession. “The financial district was failing. CNN —After 800 years of calm, volcanoes have awakened in the Reykjanes Peninsula of Iceland — about 56 kilometers (35 miles) south of the nation’s capital, Reykjavik. While there is no risk of a global calamity happening, researchers are now warning that new scientific evidence suggests the eruptions originating from the Reykjanes Peninsula could continue for years or even decades. But people staying there, with the possibility of a very rapid onset of volcanic activity, I don’t think that’s recommended. “The Reykjanes peninsula is exactly on this plate boundary,” he added, “and it seems that we are now witnessing the earliest part of a major eruption episode. Spaceflight veterans Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore arrived at the space station aboard the Starliner on June 6. It’s not uncommon for astronauts to unexpectedly extend their stay aboard the space station — for days, weeks or even months. But the situation makes for a moment of uncertainty and embarrassment that joins a long list of similar blunders by the Boeing Starliner program, which is already years behind schedule. The Starliner spacecraft on NASA's Boeing Crew Flight Test is pictured docked to the Harmony module's forward port on June 13 as the International Space Station orbited 262 miles above Egypt's Mediterranean coast. The first Starliner test mission, flown without crew in late 2019, was riddled with missteps.

The price of bitcoin was last lower by 3% at $64,680.44, according to Coin Metrics, dipping under $65,000 for the first time since May 16. "Economic conditions around the globe are weakening, geopolitical issues are far from resolution, and markets are thinner during the summer months. Bitcoin has been wrestling with the $70,000 threshold since hitting its March 14 record of $73,797.68. This is, says Kowert, because “games reflect culture.”Adding climate crisis elements to games can also make the topic more accessible, Kowert says. On the side of the Catan: New Energies board, a little black marker tracks the level of greenhouse gasses in the current game. It can also trigger the early end of the game, in which case the player with the most renewable power plants wins. Players can add green discs to the bag — which can give players using renewable energy bonuses — by building renewable power plants. Sometime in the next few years — no one knows exactly when — three NASA satellites, each one as heavy as an elephant, will go dark. Already they are drifting, losing height bit by bit. But age is catching up to them, and soon they will send their last transmissions and begin their slow, final fall to Earth. With some of the data these satellites gather, the situation is even worse: No other instruments will keep collecting it. In a few short years, the fine features they reveal about our world will become much fuzzier.

In the ruling, the court found that no violation by Italy had occurred. While the case was in court, Italy began negotiating with the Getty for the return of some of the works it identified as looted. Either party has three months to request that the case be referred to the Grand Chamber of the European court to consider whether it deserved further examination. “But the cases where they pass to the Grand Chamber are rare,” said D’Ascia, the lawyer. The Getty said Thursday that it was “carefully considering the possibility of requesting a review before the Grand Chamber.”
