CNN —The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) says it’s lodging an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) after an independent tribunal found world No. 1 tennis player Jannik Sinner wasn’t at fault for twice testing positive for a banned substance in March 2024. Italian phenom Jannik Sinner cast aside doping allegations and won his second Grand Slam title of the year, beating American Taylor Fritz 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 in the U.S. Open final Sunday in New York City. He won this year's Australian Open and reached the semifinals of the French Open and Wimbledon before he hoisted another trophy in Queens. Sinner's triumph denied Fritz, a San Diego-area native, his first major title and kept alive a two-decade-long streak of American men’s failing to win the biggest tennis tournament on U.S. soil. Fritz, 26, came close to Grand Slam titles with quarterfinal appearances at Wimbledon and the French Open this year and another round-of-eight visit to Wimbledon in 2022. Sunday's final culminated a U.S. Open rocked by the shocking second-round upset of Alcaraz and the surprising third-round loss by Djokovic, the defending champ.

LONDON (AP) — Two-time Grand Slam champion Simona Halep has been suspended from professional tennis for four years for doping violations, the International Tennis Integrity Agency said Tuesday. The 31-year-old Romanian had been accused of two doping offenses — failing a drug test during the 2022 U.S. Open and for irregularities in her Athlete Biological Passport, the ITIA said. A panel concluded that Halep “had committed intentional anti-doping rule violations.”Halep had been provisionally suspended since October 2022. Such passports provide a baseline reading of substances in an athlete’s body and are considered a way to help chart doping. The tribunal reported that “likely doping” was the explanation for the irregularities in Halep’s profile.

The ITIA said earlier on Tuesday it came to its conclusion based on the collection and analysis of 51 blood samples provided by Halep. Halep explained that since she had tested negative three days earlier, the exposure could only have been accidental. The WTA will support the decisions reached through the process and will continue to follow this closely," it said.

May 19 (Reuters) - Former world number one Simona Halep has been charged with a second breach of doping rules, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) said on Friday. The additional charge relates to irregularities in Romanian Halep's Athlete Biological Passport (ABP), based on an assessment of her profile by an independent ABP Expert Panel. Halep has denied knowingly taking the banned substance and said she has evidence which proves low quantities of the anti-anaemia drug entered her body because of an authorised supplement that was contaminated. Last month Halep called on tennis's anti-doping body to allow her to clear her name, questioning the long delay in her doping hearing after being denied the right to be heard by an independent court.
