"I think of this battle, this geopolitical battle to build AGI first as a 'hopium war'," Tegmark told CNBC in an interview last month. " And that means that the AGI race is not an arms race, it's a suicide race," Tegmark said. When it comes to AGI, China is likely to pursue a similar approach, according to analysts. Similar predictions were made about the internet, they all proved to be false," Kendra Schaefer, a partner at consultancy Trivium China," told CNBC. watch now"With AI, China hopes to shift the balance of power around the globe, like creating a new export model.

Richard Branson believes the environmental costs of space travel will "come down even further." Dozens of high-profile figures in business and politics are calling on world leaders to address the existential risks of artificial intelligence and the climate crisis. Virgin Group founder Richard Branson, along with former United Nations General Secretary Ban Ki-moon, and Charles Oppenheimer — the grandson of American physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer — signed an open letter urging action against the escalating dangers of the climate crisis, pandemics, nuclear weapons, and ungoverned AI. Signatories called for urgent multilateral action, including through financing the transition away from fossil fuels, signing an equitable pandemic treaty, restarting nuclear arms talks, and building global governance needed to make AI a force for good. The letter was released on Thursday by The Elders, a nongovernmental organization that was launched by former South African President Nelson Mandela and Branson to address global human rights issues and advocate for world peace.

Meta's Yann LeCun thinks tech bosses' bleak comments on AI risks could do more harm than good. Thanks to @RishiSunak & @vonderleyen for realizing that AI xrisk arguments from Turing, Hinton, Bengio, Russell, Altman, Hassabis & Amodei can't be refuted with snark and corporate lobbying alone. https://t.co/Zv1rvOA3Zz — Max Tegmark (@tegmark) October 29, 2023LeCun says founder fretting is just lobbyingSince the launch of ChatGPT , AI's power players have become major public figures. The focus on hypothetical dangers also divert attention away from the boring-but-important question of how AI development actually takes shape. For LeCun, keeping AI development closed is a real reason for alarm.

Technologists and advocates are again set to visit Capitol Hill on Tuesday to discuss with Senate leaders the perils and promises of artificial intelligence. Venture capitalists Marc Andreessen, co-founder and general partner of Andreessen Horowitz, and John Doerr, chair of Kleiner Perkins, will be among the 21 attendees at the second AI Insights Forum hosted by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., according to a spokesperson for his office. The session is a continuation of the Majority Leader's effort to get the chamber up to speed on AI to determine how best to approach AI regulation. For example, Future of Life Institute President Max Tegmark is also set to attend. Other tech leaders such as Micron Executive Vice President Manish Bhatia, Revolution CEO Steve Case, Stripe CEO Patrick Collison and Cohere CEO Aidan Gomez will be in attendance.

Max Tegmark has long believed in the promise of artificial intelligence. As a physicist and AI researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a co-founder of the Future of Life Institute, which studies technology, he has envisioned a near future in which superintelligent computers could fight climate change, find cures for cancer and generally solve our thorniest problems. As long as proper safety standards are in place, he argued, “the sky’s the limit.”

Civil society groups in the U.S. and EU have since pressed lawmakers to rein in OpenAI's research. Among the research cited was "On the Dangers of Stochastic Parrots", a well-known paper co-authored by Margaret Mitchell, who previously oversaw ethical AI research at Google. Her research argued the present-day use of AI systems could influence decision-making in relation to climate change, nuclear war, and other existential threats. Asked to comment on the criticism, FLI's Tegmark said both short-term and long-term risks of AI should be taken seriously. Twitter will soon launch a new fee structure for access to its research data, potentially hindering research on the subject.
Elon Musk and dozens of other technology leaders have called on AI labs to pause the development of systems that can compete with human-level intelligence. "Contemporary AI systems are now becoming human-competitive at general tasks, and we must ask ourselves: Should we let machines flood our information channels with propaganda and untruth?" The Future of Life Institute is a nonprofit organization based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, that campaigns for the responsible and ethical development of artificial intelligence. The institute has previously gotten the likes of Musk and Google-owned AI lab DeepMind to promise never to develop lethal autonomous weapons systems. The institute said it was calling on all AI labs to "immediately pause for at least 6 months the training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4."
