Amazon workers in more than 20 countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom, plan to hold protests or go on strike between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, two of the marquee shopping promotions of the year, according to organizers. ‘Make Amazon Pay Day’ is becoming a global act of resistance against Amazon’s abuse of power,” said Christy Hoffman, general secretary of UNI Global Union. In at least six German towns, thousands of Amazon workers are set to strike. In New Delhi, hundreds of Amazon workers are expected to rally to demand fair treatment. “Amazon is everywhere, but so are we,” said Varsha Gandikota-Nellutla, co-general coordinator of Progressive International.

Many U.S. retailers are hoping to put the fall quarter behind them. But she said the company has begun to see holiday sales momentum now that the vote is over — with particular demand for computers, tablets and sales in its services department. Among those expecting stronger holiday sales Tuesday was Abercrombie & Fitch, which continues to see a sales renaissance. The trendy apparel chain now expects holiday quarter sales growth of 5% to 7%, ahead of the 4.8% growth that analysts had expected, CNBC reported. It also lifted its sales growth guidance for the full year.

CNN —Can the green shoots of clean energy break through the “brown blockade”? Those huge current and planned investments in new manufacturing plants may represent the sole opportunity to preserve any elements of Biden’s blueprint for growing the domestic clean energy industry. Republican districts are slated to receive an equally large share of another $435 billion in clean energy projects that have been announced but not yet built, the analysis found. The US reliance on the fossil fuels driving climate change has been declining for years, but only at a modest pace. Yet interrupting that transition by repealing the federal policies benefiting clean energy remains a dangerous gamble.

"Artificial intelligence" and "job creation" aren't typically two terms thrown together in the same sentence — and for good reason. One report from Goldman Sachs in 2023 estimated 300 million full-time jobs could be lost to automation. Tens of millions of jobs are also being created by AI, with jobs that require AI specialist skills growing at 3.5 times the pace of jobs overall. CNBC met with three Singaporeans working with AI across multiple sectors, as they fought scams and fraud, developed large language models and designed chatbots. Watch the video above to learn how engineers are leveraging AI in their jobs – and why it's never too late for a career switch.

In the Ukraine war, drones are surveilling and striking enemy vehicles and troop positions. The new Mate 70 smartphone, which starts at 5,499 yuan ($760), features the HarmonyOS Next operating system, which no longer supports Android-based apps. The Mate 70 represents a “critical step” in Huawei’s software evolution, Lucas Zhong, research analyst at Canalys, told CNN. The shift away from the Android ecosystem “will be essential for Huawei to maintain momentum in the premium segment, solidify consumer loyalty, and attract potential platform switchers,” he said. Major Chinese tech companies have reportedly gotten on board, hiring developers to create compatible apps. “If no one uses it, no matter how advanced the operating system is, it will have no value,” he said, according to a Wechat post.

Last year, the tech giant Huawei catapulted to the top of the smartphone market in China when it released the Mate 60 Pro, a phone that contained a tiny computer chip more advanced than any previously made by a Chinese company. The chips used by Huawei’s smartphones have become a symbol in the struggle between China and the United States for control over advanced technology. Policymakers in Washington have spent years trying to prevent Chinese companies from being able to make the kind of chip Huawei uses in its Mate phone. Shoppers in China were excited to buy a phone with state-of-the-art components that had been made entirely at home. Huawei was able to appeal to Chinese customers who previously would have been more likely to buy iPhones, eating into Apple’s most important market outside the United States.

By corporate America's (sometimes dubious) telling, AI is basically the answer to everything, including customer service. A recent Gartner survey found that nearly two-thirds of customers prefer that companies don't use AI for customer service. "We know that there are certain aspects of customer service that AI is doing well. What's more, if every company has a mediocre AI experience, the bar might just be lowered across the board.

San Francisco-based Databricks is raising at least another $5 billion in its latest funding round — though it could raise up to $8 billion given the round is ongoing — according to several sources who asked not to be named because the discussions were private. The latest raise would value the company at $55 billion and could top the largest round of the year by OpenAI. The latest funding is designed to help Databricks employees sell shares, a source said. One source said the funding round makes Databricks' highly anticipated public debut less urgent. This summer, it acquired MosaicML, a $1.3 billion software startup that focuses on large language models that can churn out natural-sounding text.

Many organizations experimenting with AI may find themselves stuck in a "perfection trap," reluctant to deploy anything less than 100% complete. This widespread hesitation to move forward can hinder AI progress — and very few organizations have moved beyond the experimentation phase. Roughly 80% of surveyed AI leaders report data-related challenges, including governance concerns. By avoiding the perfection trap, leaders can foster sustained innovation and maximize the value of their AI investments.
