Jordan Chiles won her first individual Olympic medal in Monday's floor exercise final, but originally, the judges left her off the podium. After losing an all-around bronze medal in a heart-wrenching tiebreaker, Raisman thought she was fourth again on the beam. Raisman was on the 2016 Olympic team with Biles that won team gold and collected more medals than any U.S. gymnastics team in history. Chiles lost the chance to contend for an all-around medal to her teammate Suni Lee, who went on to win bronze. Eight years ago, Raisman won her last Olympic medal in Rio, a silver in her signature event, the floor exercise.

Gold medalist Kristen Faulkner of Team United States poses on the podium during the Women's Road Race on day nine of the Olympic Games Paris 2024 at Trocadero on August 04, 2024 in Paris, France. Kristen Faulkner ended a 40-year-drought for the U.S. in the Paris Olympics — in a sport she picked up for fun six years ago. On Sunday, the 31-year-old became the first American rider to win gold in the women's road race since Connie Carpenter did so in the 1984 Los Angeles games. She didn't start competitive cycling until 2017 when she moved to New York to work as a venture capitalist. She told the Associated Press that her career as a venture capitalist has been instrumental in her success as a professional athlete.

Underdog is an understatement for Kristen Faulkner, the American cyclist who didn't even qualify for the Olympics but is now going home with a gold medal after a shocking race through Paris on Sunday. She is the first American woman to win gold in the women’s road race since 1984. Kristen Faulkner of Team United States celebrates winning gold at the finish line during the Women's Road Race on day nine of the Olympic Games Paris 2024 on Aug. 4, 2024. Though spectators might be shocked that she walked away with a medal on Sunday, Faulkner knew she had it in her. “I want to win a medal at the Olympics,” she said.

The 2024 Paris Olympics are attracting new funds for lesser-known sports and women's teams, with USA women's rugby sevens, water polo and women's track and field scoring major contributions this year. The USA women's rugby sevens team earned a $4 million gift from investor Michele Kang earlier this week. Flavor Flav announced a five-year partnership with USA water polo, which includes funds for the 2024 USA women's team as well as serving as the "official hype man" for both the men's and women's teams. The USA women's water polo team has won gold for the past three Olympics, and Flavor Flav aims to elevate their visibility. The partnership includes his commitment to boosting USA water polo on social media, beyond cheering poolside.

Women continue to face a significant wage gap that has hardly budged over the last 15 years, with women of color bearing the brunt of the disparity. The year "2022 really is a mixed bag when it comes to gender equality," says Melissa Boteach, the vice president for income security and child care/early learning at the National Women's Law Center. Aside from that victory, there has been little progress in closing the gender wage gap over the past decade. This year, the wage gap narrowed by one penny. The wage gap Black women face narrowed by about four cents in one year, while Latinas' wage gap didn't budge at all.
