CNN —The name “San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport” is off-limits to Oakland’s airport — at least for now. On Tuesday, US Magistrate Judge Thomas S. Hixson blocked the Port of Oakland from using the name it recently adopted for the Bay Area airport that was formerly called Metropolitan Oakland International Airport. The judge granted the City of San Francisco’s motion for a preliminary injunction with respect to the Port of Oakland while the legal battle plays out. The City of San Francisco filed a lawsuit on April 18 following the approval by Oakland’s Board of Port Commissioners to change the airport’s name. The National Weather Service issued a Red Flag warning until 6 p.m. Thursday – which is used to describe “extreme and life-threatening fire behavior.” The warning is expected to affect 27 million people in Southern California and the greater San Francisco Bay area. More than 14,000 people remain under evacuation orders, according to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office. Kapoor added that fires are part of the “Los Angeles reality” and all professors could do was follow guidance from emergency officials and reassure students. Fires were set at three ballot boxes in the area in the past three weeks. An “incendiary device” found attached to the side of a ballot drop box in Portland, Oregon, early Monday damaged ballots, but most were unaffected because of fire suppressant installed in the ballot box. Investigators have also linked the two incidents to a third ballot box fire on October 8, also in Vancouver, which is just across the Columbia River from Portland. All ballot boxes in Multnomah and Clark counties – where Portland and Vancouver are located, respectively – have fire suppressant installed, election officials said at a news conference Monday. In Clark County, Washington, 60% of the ballots received are from ballot drop boxes and 40% are received by mail, according to Clark County Auditor Greg Kimsey.

CNN —Mark Chavez, one of the two doctors charged in connection with “Friends” star Matthew Perry’s death, has pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute ketamine as part of a plea agreement during a court appearance in Los Angeles on Wednesday. Chavez is accused of providing Dr. Salvador Plasencia – who is also charged in connection with Perry’s death and has previously pleaded not guilty – with the ketamine given to Perry through a fraudulent prescription, according to court documents. Plasencia and Chavez are among the five people who have been charged in connection with the death of the beloved actor. Perry’s personal assistant Kenneth Iwamasa and an acquaintance of Perry’s, Erik Fleming, were also charged and, along with Chavez, have been cooperative with prosecutors. CNN —A United Airlines plane lost a wheel while taking off Monday from Los Angeles International Airport, officials said, marking the latest issue this year for the airline, which was already the focus of a safety review by federal aviation officials. The Boeing 757-200 that lost its wheel completed its planned flight to Denver, where it safely landed, United said. “The wheel has been recovered in Los Angeles, and we are investigating what caused this event,” the airline said in a statement. CNN —The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating a United Airlines flight that lost a tire while taking off from San Francisco International Airport, damaging several cars in a parking lot before the plane safely landed at Los Angeles International Airport, the agency said. United Airlines confirmed the plane lost one tire after takeoff. United flight 35, with 249 passengers and crew onboard, was diverted to Los Angeles and landed shortly after 1:20 p.m., the airline told CNN. Nex Benedict, whose family and friends say identified as nonbinary, died February 8, a day after they told their family they were involved in a fight with others at Owasso High School. Body camera video from February 7 shows an Owasso police officer interacting with Nex and their guardian, Sue Benedict, in a hospital after the fight in a school bathroom between two groups of students. Nex eventually got thrown onto the ground and the other students proceeded to beat them up, Nex says in the video. CNN —China is sending two giant pandas to the San Diego Zoo – the first time it has granted new panda loans to the United States in two decades. His comments came shortly after the Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington, DC sent its three pandas back to China – marking the end of more than 50 years of Chinese pandas being housed at the zoo. The National Zoo was the first US zoo to showcase pandas, and the end of its program had left Zoo Atlanta as the only other US zoo to feature pandas. San Diego Zoo returned its last two pandas to China in 2019, after its loan agreement ended. According to Xinhua, discussions are ongoing for “a new round of cooperation” with the National Zoo and a zoo in Austria.

CNN —A 16-year-old student died following a fight at an Oklahoma high school – and as an investigation into the cause of death continues, advocates point to a heightened and hostile climate against the LGBTQ+ community. Nex Benedict, whose family says identified as nonbinary, died February 8, one day after they told their family they and a transgender student were involved in a fight with others at Owasso High School. It is not clear if or how the fight contributed to Nex’s death. An Owasso school resource officer went to Bailey Medical Center, where Nex was examined, and interviewed both Nex and their parent about the incident. Nex’s death comes after advocates have strongly criticized Oklahoma officials for actions perceived as targeting LGBTQ+ residents.

CNN —Authorities in southern California have arrested five men in connection to the grisly killings of six people discovered shot – and some of whom were also burned – last week in a remote area of the Mojave Desert. The killings appear to be connected to illegal marijuana, authorities said, though they did not release many details, as the case is being reviewed by the district attorney’s office. Warrick said the man told them in Spanish he had been shot but did not know where he was. Authorities served multiple search warrants throughout the investigation and recovered several firearms and other evidence, the news release said. “We are confident that this appears to be a dispute over marijuana, which resulted in the murders,” Warrick said.

Steven Robert Sablan, 62, abducted the girl at gunpoint on or about July 6, 2023, in San Antonio and “engaged in sexual activity” with her while driving her to Long Beach, California, the plea agreement states. The child was rescued on July 9, 2023, after Sablan went into a laundromat in Long Beach, California, and the girl held up a “Help Me!” sign from inside Sablan’s parked vehicle. A good Samaritan called 911 after spotting the sign, and Long Beach police officers said at the time the girl was “visibly emotional and distressed” when they arrived. Sablan faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years in prison and a maximum sentence of life imprisonment, the US Attorney’s office said in the news release. He will also be required to register as a sex offender when released from prison, the plea agreement says.

KOLDErickson previously told CNN Chauvin’s family wasn’t alerted about the incident and his parents hadn’t been able to reach him. Chauvin was assaulted Friday afternoon at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson, a medium-security facility, while serving two concurrent sentences in Floyd’s murder. In April 2021, Chauvin was convicted on state charges of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. Months later, Chauvin pleaded guilty to federal charges of depriving Floyd of his civil rights and was sentenced to 21 years in prison.

CNN —The search for three people missing after a landslide covered an Alaskan highway on Monday is moving “from an active search to a reactive search,” Alaskan authorities said. Rescuers have so far found the remains of three people who died after the landslide hit the Zimovia Highway, near Wrangell, around 9 p.m. Monday evening. Authorities may restart the active search if new evidence shows the missing people might be in a specific area, they said. Authorities plan to release the names of those who died and the missing people on Friday, the department said in its Thursday release. CNN —Investigators are working to determine who is responsible for a massive fire over the weekend that has forced the indefinite closure of part of Los Angeles’ Interstate 10, as fire officials say the blaze was likely arson. Residents who are impacted have been urged to take public transit, work from home or plan for significant traffic delays. Investigators have sifted through the fire’s rubble in search of evidence and are working with Los Angeles firefighters to canvass the surrounding neighborhoods for potential witnesses and video footage, the fire marshal added. Firefighters responded to reports of the fire around 12:30 a.m. Saturday at a storage yard scattered with pallets, trailers and vehicles, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. Woodyard had pleaded not guilty to charges of reckless manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide in connection with McClain’s death.
