Among his patients, he's seeing election-related anxiety tied to the race between Harris and Trump. This year, he's hearing a range of concerns from his patients regarding both Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. The result: These folks are overwhelmingly keeping quiet about their political beliefs and voting plans for the upcoming election and are closeted Trump supporters. For many people, their political beliefs are often tied to personal identity. AdvertisementBut by keeping political beliefs hidden, it can affect personal relationships.

The company launched its first Amazon Go convenience store featuring a new kind of technology, called "Just Walk Out." In 2020, the company began licensing Just Walk Out technology to third parties, signing on retailers in stadiums, airports and hospitals. The company discontinued some of its retail chains, closed eight Amazon Go stores, and hit pause on new Fresh store openings. While it's no longer featuring Just Walk Out as prominently in its own stores, Amazon says it has inked deals with a growing list of customers. Amazon in July updated the AI system behind its Just Walk Out technology to handle all the inputs in a store simultaneously.

Members of the California Legislative Black Caucus heralded his signature on four bills, including an apology for the state’s role in promoting slavery. In his remarks, Newsom said the bill could not function without the accompanying Freedmen Affairs Agency, which would have been established by another one of Bradford’s bills. The centerpiece of Bradford’s reparations package was the Freedmen Affairs Agency, which would have overseen state reparations initiatives. While overall inflation has slowed, insurance costs are taking a bigger bite out of many household budgets. Car insurance premiums have also shot up. Bankrate estimates that in September the average cost for full coverage car insurance is $2,348 a year. Extreme weather events, higher replacement and repair costs, and increased medical expenses after accidents have boosted car insurance rates, experts say. Car insurance discounts range from safe driver and good student discounts to taking a defensive driving course.

MONTEREY, California — Hundreds of California sea lions have taken over San Carlos Beach in Monterey, California, prompting local officials to close the area to people. Caution tape has been put up but crowds are still drawn to the animal spectacle, taking photos of the sea lions as they rest and play on the sand and in the water. Hundreds of sea lions lay at the San Carlos beach in Monterey. They were expected to remain on San Carlos Beach for three to four weeks, Uttal said. Marge Brigadier, a volunteer with Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary’s Bay Net program, said the sea lions were protected by the U.S. Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972, which prohibits people from changing the behavior of the sea lions, meaning that approaching too close or forcing them to flee is a violation.

New research identifies the 10 best-performing US stocks since 1926. Of 29,000 US stocks traded since 1926, most had negative returns, but top performers showed consistent gains. Of course, identifying the 10 best-performing stocks for the next 100 years is nearly impossible, as the paper's author points out. "The majority (51.6%) of these stocks had negative cumulative returns," finance professor Hendrik Bessembinder of Arizona State University wrote. Bessembinder also observed that the 10 best-performing stocks delivered consistently modest annualized gains, reinforcing the slow and steady mantra championed by long-term investors.

In 2022, Delta Air Lines offered passengers $10,000 cash to take a different flight after overselling a flight from Michigan to Minnesota amid the summer's post-pandemic travel chaos. DOT rules entitle passengers to hundreds of dollars in compensation if they are involuntarily bumped from a flight, under certain terms and conditions. How to lower the odds of getting bumped from a flightThere's nothing you can do to guarantee you won't get bumped from an overbooked flight, as one traveler who said he was bumped off an American Airlines flight learned the hard way. According to the DOT's 2023 consumer air travel data, Allegiant Air, Delta Air Lines, and Hawaiian Airlines involuntarily bumped 0, 3, and 5 people, respectively, over the entire year. On the other end of the spectrum, American Airlines and Frontier Airlines involuntarily bumped over 10,000 passengers each in 2023.

Read previewBird flu is flying wild, and it has many infectious disease experts more worried now than ever. The H5N1 avian influenza virus has killed tens of millions of birds across the planet and more than 40,000 sea lions and seals. Most people seem to have very little chance, if any, of catching H5N1 avian influenza right now. Jim Vondruska/ReutersBut infectious disease experts are increasingly concerned that the H5N1 virus could make a sustained jump into humans and start spreading among us. This virus is a leading candidate for the next pandemic, and four developments in the past month have experts worried.

Last month's job cut count was the highest of any February since 2009, when the financial crisis forced companies into cash preservation mode. CNBC spoke to a dozen people who have been laid off from tech jobs in the past year or so about their experiences navigating the labor market. Additionally, some listings required applicants to have advanced degrees or professional experience in machine learning and artificial intelligence, a new development in Croisant's experience on the job market. "It is a combination of how well you brand yourself, about your access through networking to any given position — to the hidden job market." Still, Powers said she's trying to stay optimistic, "because giving up is not going to get me a job."
