Thanks to de-aging technology, De Niro portrayed Sheeran throughout his life, the lines on his face digitally smoothed. There are a few ways to make actors appear younger on screen using technology, each with advantages and disadvantages. In 2019’s “Gemini Man," the younger version of Will Smith’s character Henry Brogan has a fully CGI head. There’s an excruciating bit in “The Irishman” when a supposedly young Sheeran kicks another character out of his shop. This, really, is why de-aging megastars always feels a bit icky.

CNN —An Italian appeals court on Wednesday upheld the convictions of two Americans accused of killing an Italian police officer in 2019, according to a joint statement from the lawyers representing them in Italy. Elder and Natale-Hjorth were arrested in 2019 while on vacation in Rome for the murder of the Italian police officer Mario Cerciello Rega, who was stabbed 11 times with a knife in a botched drug deal, police said at the time. In 2022, Reuters reported that the appeals court had lowered Elder’s sentence to 24 years, and Natale-Hjorth’s sentence to 22 years. CNN —The fortuitous timing of having a series produced by and featuring newly minted Oscar-winner Robert Downey Jr. tumbles down a very strange rabbit hole in “The Sympathizer,” a darkly satirical look at the Vietnam War and its aftermath. Each episode begins with dated-looking credits that evoke the 1970s, a promising Quentin Tarantino-ish conceit that, given what follows, sets expectations too high. As constructed, it’s a rather heavy-handed approximation of the fate Vietnam experienced in the pull of the war, which doesn’t make the Captain’s increasingly surreal arc any more compelling. Strangelove,” assuming that was the intent, than a means of maximizing the star’s presence without really heightening its impact. “The Sympathizer” is hardly the first project to funnel the contradictions of the Vietnam War through an exaggerated lens (“Apocalypse Now” being a prime example), but except for a few bracing sequences the execution only clouds that vision.

Pericet, who comes from a family of flamenco dancers and teachers, has a deep respect for the traditions of the form. Over the years the Flamenco Festival, which arrives in New York each spring, has offered a window on its evolution. This year the festival has three dance programs at City Center, beginning March 8, each invoking a range of associations: to past dance forms, to flamenco auteurs, and to the central role of the flamenco guitar. Pericet’s “La Leona,” takes its inspiration from a 19th-century guitar prototype that produced the rich, resonant sound we now associate with flamenco music.
