LIV Golf is playing only for cash, not world ranking points, after the Official World Golf Ranking board determined it could not fairly measure the 48-man league with the other 24 tours around the world. LIV Golf made its debut in June 2022, and the lack of world ranking points has taken an enormous toll. Among those no longer in the top 100 are Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau and Talor Gooch, who has three LIV Golf victories this year. LIV Golf can reapply to be part of the OWGR system, though the board made it clear that turnover, objective access to LIV Golf and relegating players who don't perform remain key points in getting ranking points. There's also the matter of the PGA Tour, European tour and Saudi backers of LIV Golf (Public Investment Fund) working out a commercial partnership announced in June.

April 30 (Reuters) - American Talor Gooch beat Sergio Garcia in a playoff to claim victory in a weather-affected LIV Golf Invitational in Singapore on Sunday and secure a second $4 million winner's pay cheque in as many LIV tour appearances. The American, who also won the LIV Golf event in Adelaide last week, went into the final round tied with Garcia, with Brooks Koepka one stroke behind them in solo third. Koepka lost some ground on the back nine and eventually settled for third, but Gooch and Garcia remained neck-and-neck until the end and both birdied on the final hole to send it into the tiebreak. "This is as good as it gets, plain and simple," Gooch said. Reporting by Aadi Nair in Bengaluru; Edited by Jamie FreedOur Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles.

SYDNEY, April 24 (Reuters) - With sell-out crowds, beer-drenched celebrations and even a few "shoeys", the LIV Golf rebel tour delivered on its promise to change the face of the game at its 12th event in the Australian city of Adelaide at the weekend. "Everybody here in Adelaide has had just the best time," said English former world number three Paul Casey. "I smelled like beer the whole entire rest of the day," said Koepka, brother of four-times major champion Brooks. Cameron Smith, Australia's most recent major champion, finished fourth after a final-round six-under-par 66 and said the tournament had set the standard for the Saudi-backed circuit. "For Aussies, I think this is the benchmark for not only, I guess, Australian LIV Golf, but kind of world LIV Golf," said last year's British Open champion.
[1/5] Apr 22, 2023; Adelaide,South Australia, AUS; Talor Gooch of Team Rangegoats hits a tee shot during the second round of LIV Golf Adelaide golf tournament at Grange Golf Club. "Winning on any tour is hard, winning on this type of golf course in front of this type of a crowd is not easy," said Gooch, who finished 19-under. "You can't go three days on this type of golf course and not make mistakes so when I made the birdie on 11, that was time to dig deep and go get a victory." Gooch started the day 20-under following back-to-back rounds of 62 and he picked up another shot with a birdie at the par-four fifth. Gooch rallied, however, with birdies at the 11th and 13th, steadying the American as he went on to win his first event on the LIV Tour.
"It's a shame I didn't get the chance to finish yesterday," Lyle told reporters. But, no, they stuck to the rules and rules are rules and we had to abide by that." The crowds that gave Lyle a standing ovation as he made his way to the 18th green on Friday also protested as chants of "Let him putt, Let him putt" rang out. "They have been very supportive," smiled Lyle, who got celebrations started on Friday with tequila and whiskey tasting into the early morning. After hometown hero Mize tapped in for an eight-over 80 Lyle made his way onto the green handing the Augusta native a tissue and jokingly wiped his eyes.

Mandatory Credit: Jasen Vinlove-USA TODAY SportsMIAMI, Oct 30 (Reuters) - Captain Dustin Johnson led the 4 Aces to the first LIV Golf team championship and the $16 million winner's purse on Sunday at Trump National Doral to bring the curtain down on the Saudi-back venture's tumultuous inaugural season. That total also does not include the reported $150 million LIV paid to lure Johnson away from the PGA Tour, and make him one of the rebel circuit's marquee recruits. Johnson's 4 Aces team mates Pat Perez, Patrick Reed, and Talor Gooch, who all defected from the PGA Tour, also pocketed $4 million. A total of 12 team took part in the $50 million team final with the last four teams splitting $1 million for a single round of golf.

If sportwashing was the objective of LIV Golf, it failed miserably instead drawing attention to a number of Saudi involvements from the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi to the Kingdom's treatment of women. Describing LIV's Saudi backers "as good people with unlimited money", Trump teased that even more big names will be signing onto the rebel circuit next year. But LIV proved at Miami that it can produce an entertaining product appealing to a younger audience who descended on Trump National as much for the party as the golf. If LIV Golf is to evolve into a major player it will also need to eventually find a broadcast deal and sponsors which so far have appeared hesitant to get onboard.

Phil Mickelson and three other LIV golfers have dropped out of an antitrust lawsuit against the PGA Tour. Mickelson and 10 other LIV-affiliated players had filed a suit against the PGA Tour in August after the tour suspended them for their participation in the rival LIV Golf league. The PGA Tour declined to comment. The Justice Department is also probing into the PGA Tour for its possible antitrust violations tied to LIV Golf. When the lawsuit was initially filed, PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan stood by the decision to suspend the LIV-affiliated players.
