Spain's Ministry of Consumer Rights on Friday slapped a $179 million euro ($186 million) fine on five low-budget airlines for "abusive practices" including charging additional cabin luggage fees. Spanish low-cost airline Vueling was ordered to pay 39.2 million euros and EasyJet was fined 29 million euros. Scandinavia's second-largest airline Norwegian and Spanish airline Volotea each received penalties in excess of 1 million euros. The five airlines should discontinue their practice of requiring additional payment for cabin luggage and reserving a seat near a dependent traveler, the ministry said. "We completely disagree with the decision of the Spanish Consumer Ministry and find the proposed sanctions outrageous," an EasyJet statement said, stressing it considers its cabin luggage policy to be aligned with all applicable laws.

The company last raised a $46 million Series B at a $500 million valuation led by Meritech in June. AdvertisementClay, the AI-powered sales startup, is set to be valued at $1.3 billion in a new insider funding round, two sources told Business Insider. Sequoia Capital, First Round Capital, Box Group, and Boldstart Ventures participated in that round. Clay's AI messaging tool can then help sales teams send tailored outbound messages to prospective customers. Apollo, a sales intelligence startup, raised a $100 million Series D round led by Bain Capital Ventures last year at a $1.6 billion valuation.

Hong Kong CNN —She appeared to be a beautiful woman and in the minds of men across Asia, the video calls they spoke on confirmed their newfound love was real. But Hong Kong police say the men had fallen prey to a romance scam that used deepfake artificial intelligence to lure its victims into parting with more than $46 million. In a news conference Monday, police in the Asian financial hub announced the arrests of more than two dozen members of the alleged scam ring, which they say targeted men from Taiwan to Singapore and as far away as India. But increasingly realistic deepfake technology has raised the stakes and put authorities on high alert. According to Hong Kong police, the romance gang’s deepfake scam typically began with a text message, in which the sender – posing as an attractive woman – said they had mistakenly added the wrong number.
