CNN —The morning after Donald Trump was reelected president, Justices Samuel Alito and Elena Kagan began jousting more than usual. More than other justices on their respective sides, conservative Alito and liberal Kagan are sharp-tongued strategic questioners. As usual, Alito and Kagan began referring to each other’s questions but with barely a glance toward the other at their elbow. Skeptical of the litigants’ case, Alito asked their lawyer Deepak Gupta why Huang would have put out financial information that could be quickly exposed as wrong. Then Alito said, “Well, I don’t want to derail … Justice Kagan had a number of hypotheticals, but I don’t want to interrupt that.”Kagan seemed miffed, but only slightly.

Bernard Looney, the former chief executive of BP, one of the world’s largest energy companies, said Sunday that he would become chairman of a data center start-up in the United States, a move that comes amid a ravenous appetite for electricity to power the boom in artificial intelligence. “Police officers must respect people’s civil and constitutional rights and treat people with dignity,” said Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division in a statement on the report. “After an extensive review, we found that police officers in Trenton routinely failed to respect the Fourth Amendment rights of those who call Trenton home. Also, the report noted, since 2021, accusations of officer misconduct has cost the city more than $7 million to resolve lawsuits. “When police stop someone in Trenton, our investigation found that all too often they violated the constitutional rights of those they stopped, sometimes with tragic consequences. “Even prior to the USDOJ review, the City and the [Trenton Police Department] had already begun to change policies and practices that prioritize community safety, accountability, and respect for civil liberties.

Police officers in Trenton, N.J., systematically violate the constitutional rights of the city’s citizens, conduct illegal searches and needlessly escalate peaceful interactions into violence, the U.S. Department of Justice found in a report published Thursday. In one event described in the 45-page report, police officers encountered an unarmed man as he ran shirtless around a hospital parking lot. The man cried, “I can’t breathe,” and, “I’m going to die.” After more than four minutes, he grew still, the report said. The man was not identified, but the details match the case of Stephen Dolceamore, 29, of Springfield, Pa., which was reported by NJ Advance Media. He died on April 3, 2020, seven weeks before George Floyd was murdered by police officers in Minneapolis.

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — When schools here reopen for the first time since Hurricane Helene unleashed a frightening deluge on western North Carolina, teachers won’t simply pick up where they left off in their lesson plans. While all Asheville City Schools students and staff members have been accounted for, they are grieving the deaths of other members of their community. “We’re not going to be able to just jump right into academics,” Asheville City Schools chief of staff Kim Dechant said. The city has restored water for toilets and handwashing at all other district schools, Dechant said. And with schools being closed for over a month, teachers will inevitably have to account for students’ learning loss.

Trenton, New Jersey AP —New Jersey’s ban on the AR-15 rifle is unconstitutional, but the state’s cap on magazines over 10 rounds passes constitutional muster, a federal judge said Tuesday. “Bans on so-called ‘assault weapons’ are immoral and unconstitutional. He added: “We look forward to pressing our arguments on appeal.”Several challenges to state assault weapons bans have cited the Bruen decision. A gun rights group has challenged Connecticut’s landmark 2013 gun control law, passed after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, that bans assault weapons, including certain AR-15-style rifles and large capacity magazines. The state’s assault weapons ban dates to 1990 and includes various other weapons, but Sheridan focused on the Colt AR-15, citing the plaintiffs’ concentration on that weapon in their court filings, and the law specifying that make of the rifle.

The unusually early heat wave that shattered temperature records across the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic States and Midwest last week is expected to subside by Monday, bringing relief to tens of millions of Americans. The National Weather Service forecast lower temperatures for much of the Mid-Atlantic on Monday. Philadelphia is also expected to have a much lower heat index value, at 82 degrees, down from 104 on Sunday, forecasters say. Places like Baltimore and Dulles, Va., broke daily temperature records two days in a row. But regions in the Southeast and Southern Plains are expected this week to remain hot — possibly at dangerous levels — with potential highs in the low 100s, according to the Weather Service.

The intense and unusually early heat wave that has blanketed much of the Northeast for the past week continued on Sunday to scorch New Jersey, where excessive heat warnings or heat advisories were in effect in most of the state, according to the National Weather Service. Temperatures throughout the region were more than 10 degrees above average on Sunday, according to Joe DeSilva, a meteorologist with the Weather Service. Trenton, the state capital, reached 98 degrees — just two degrees shy of the city’s hottest recorded temperature, last logged in 1952, he said. The worst of the sweltering heat should be over by Sunday evening, Mr. DeSilva said, though temperatures were expected to remain in the 80s in the coming week. Pet owners should also monitor their animals for signs of overheating, such as excessive panting, drooling and lethargy, officials said.
