Structure Therapeutics is an overlooked player in the GLP-1 market, and could one day boast a competitive product and go up against Eli Lilly and the like, according to JPMorgan. Analyst Hardik Parikh initiated research coverage on the clinical stage drug developer with an overweight rating and $65 price target, implying 82% potential upside. According to Parikh, Structure's current $1.7 billion market value undervalues 1290's peak sales opportunity to generate more than $1 billion by 2035. Parikh estimated that Structure will launch 1290 for Type 2 diabetes, or T2D, after 2029. Additionally, Parikh thinks Structure could be an attractive partnership opportunity for larger drug companies looking to get involved in the market for obesity and Type 2 diabetes treatments.

Analysts are highlighting the company's groundbreaking therapies that directly target the gut and pancreas to ultimately induce Type 2 diabetes maintenance and weight loss. Fernandez sees a total addressable market of $140 billion to support patients with obesity. He expects there is a potential for GLP-1 drugs to become as common and widely used, much like statins are used to lower cholesterol. Morgan Stanley's Flynn estimates a 30% share of the diabetes market would generate $109 billion on a worldwide basis for GLP-1 drugs. Layer in a 15% to 30% share of the obesity market and that equates to worldwide sales of $97.4 billion to $194.8 billion. Guggenheim's estimates also assume that oral GLP-1 drugs that are currently in development are able to come to market a few years from now.

What's more, some showed no signs their weight loss was leveling off, suggesting they could continue to shed pounds. (Both use semaglutide, but Ozempic is marketed as a type 2 diabetes treatment, while Wegovy is primarily for weight loss.) Bank of America's Geoff Meacham said retatrutide "exceeded expectations" for weight loss. "This is important, as while the overall 22.4% weight loss was impressive, looking at men and women separately, weight loss was 21.9% and 28.5%, respectively, with the slope in females not yet plateauing. Schott also described the weight loss as "impressive" and said it will likely compare favorably with Novo's next-generation drug CagriSema, which is expected to show weight loss of more than 25% when it releases its next update.

Credit Suisse analyst Trung Huynh has combed through social media and is impressed by the awareness — and demand — for GLP-1 medications such as Eli Lilly 's Mounjaro. Among those observations are reports of other potential benefits that patients taking Mounjaro, or tirzepatide, are seeing. Others taking the drug reported benefits such as a reduction in addiction behaviors such as smoking, drinking, gambling and shopping, among other things. However, this may be a function of patients who are trying to use Mounjaro off-label for obesity, he said. Credit Suisse has an outperform rating on Lilly shares, with a $490 price target, which implies more than 9% upside from where Lilly shares closed Wednesday.

As several macro overhangs weigh on the markets, UBS named its most compelling plays for the rest of 2023. Meta shares have surged more than 117% year to date amid numerous cost-cutting measures, which CEO Mark Zuckerberg termed as the company's " year of efficiency ." Pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly is another stock UBS thinks can outperform during uncertain times. The bank added that, "Beyond Mounjaro, LLY has a robust pipeline including late-stage Alzheimer's asset donanemab and promising next-generation obesity/T2D assets." UBS thinks the company will continue to benefit from the liquified natural gas backlog, as European countries look for alternatives to Russian gas.
Lilly said slightly more than 50% of commercial and Part D subscribers have access to the drug via their insurance plans. But new classes of weight loss medications are helping to change this mindset. Still, legislation will be necessary to get coverage of Mounjaro for obesity and overweight treatment by Medicare plans. By law, these plans are banned from paying for weight loss medications. Wegovy and Mounjaro One encouraging sign: Lilly competitor Novo Nordisk has gained access to more than 80% of insurance company formularies for their obesity treatment, Wegovy.
"That said, the biggest drugs usually feature one, or best case two, of these attributes." Seven drugs on Meacham's list are already in the market, and have already hit the $10 billion or more benchmark. That means some of these drugs may be already hitting the end of their peak sales period. Meacham has previously said that one of the drugs in this bucket, Eli Lilly's tirzepatide, could be the first $100 billion drug . But many investors are hopeful about its potential as an obesity treatment .
