New York CNN —Bob’s Stores, a discount store located in northeast America, is shutting down after seven decades in business. “We regret that our financial position necessitated the liquidation of Bob’s Stores,” Dave Barton, president of Bob’s Stores, said in a press release. All locations are offering steep discounts on everything the company sells, ranging from shoes to clothing. In 2022, Bob’s Stores was sold to GoDigital Media Group. Bob’s joins a growing number of retail bankruptcies in 2024, spurred from a slowdown in consumer spending and rising inflation.

Many large retailers in the U.S. have long been engaged in the practice of quietly tracking and targeting return behavior. According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, U.S. retailers use third-party loss-prevention services to track risky return behavior. This doesn't outright mean fraudulent activity, but rather behavior that "mimics" or could be linked to such behavior. The most notable third-party loss-prevention service is The Retail Equation, a software provider that tracks return behavior that retailers deem potentially fraudulent. According to several now-dismissed lawsuits and Better Business Bureau complaints, customers reported they were following a store's return policy and were still issued a warning.

Macy's on Thursday said it will cut about 3.5% of its workforce and close five of its namesake mall locations as the legacy department store moves to trim costs and turn around slowing sales. The move will affect approximately 2,350 positions across its corporate office and stores, company spokesman Chris Grams said. The majority of those — roughly 500 —are its namesake stores, followed by 158 Bluemercury stores and 56 Bloomingdale's stores. The department store chain's footprint has gotten smaller in recent years, however. He said since that 2020 announcement, Macy's had closed about 80 namesake locations and had plans to soon close another five.

The success or failure of the Nordstrom Rack turnaround effort could shape the company's future. Those chains such as T.J.Maxx , Ross Stores and Burlington Stores , have opened more stores and wooed new customers, driving higher foot traffic than Nordstrom Rack has seen. Nordstrom Rack stores outnumber the company's namesake stores, with 241 locations across the country, according to company filings. Nordstrom Rack stores accounted for more than 40% of new customers in 2022, CEO Erik Nordstrom said on the March earnings call. As it pins its growth hopes on the off-price locations, Nordstrom has turned Rack stores into e-commerce hubs, too.
