Swedish automaker Volvo Cars on Wednesday announced deputy CEO Björn Annwall will step down from his current role as part of a management reshuffle designed to increase simplicity and collaboration in the organization. It comes shortly after Volvo Cars abandoned its near-term goal of selling only electric vehicles (EVs), citing a need to be "pragmatic and flexible." "In a rapidly changing world, we need to ensure our organisation is equipped to navigate a more challenging market," Jim Rowan, CEO at Volvo Cars, said in a written statement. "We are now regrouping our commercial leadership team with a focus on making Volvo Cars even stronger with increased speed and efficiency," he added. Volvo Cars said it was taking these steps to navigate challenges facing the automotive industry, such as headwinds driven by geopolitical and macroeconomic uncertainties, market sentiment, rapid technology shifts and supply chains.

Volvo Cars, which is owned by China's Geely Holding, had been among the first legacy carmakers to promise a complete switch to EVs. The firm said its long-term aim remains to become a fully electric carmaker. The target replaces a 2021 pledge for Volvo Cars' lineup to be fully electric by the end of the decade. The move means Volvo Cars follows in the footsteps of other industry players in scaling back its EV ambitions. Shares of Volvo Cars traded more than 4% lower Wednesday.

Sweden's Volvo Cars on Thursday climbed to its highest level since November, after the automaker reported record single-month sales for March and solid electric vehicle growth in Europe. Year-on-year sales of electric vehicles in Europe were 22% higher in the quarter and up 34% year-on-year in March, roughly in line with overall sales growth in that market. Sales of electric models to China, the largest EV market, dropped by 36% despite a 4% hike in overall sales. Overall sales growth was 17%. "These numbers reflect the strength of our strategy and product diversity - offering fully electric cars alongside plug-in hybrids and mild hybrids in the right mix," Volvo Cars' Deputy CEO Björn Annwall said in a statement.

Six people who had been working on the bridge were presumed dead on Wednesday, after rescuers failed to find them. The Port of Baltimore, the 11th largest port in the U.S. and its busiest for autos and light trucks, has been closed until further notice. Sweden's Volvo Group said it did not expect a significant impact, but was checking its U.S. production facilities.

Mack Trucks, founded in Brooklyn, New York, in 1900, is renowned for its 18-wheelers, diesel-powered big rigs with a trademark bulldog mounted on the hood. Purchase-making decisions are distinct for consumer and commercial markets, a difference reflected in last year's EV sales results within both sectors and outlooks for future growth. EV sales increased year over year by 40% in the fourth quarter, yet were down from 49% in the third quarter. Cox expects this year's EV sales to reach 1.5 million, about 36% higher than last year. Eighty EV truck deployments were cataloged in 2020, and those deployments jumped to 1,948 in 2022.

LONDON — European markets were muted on Thursday as investors assessed the implications of some big U.S. corporate results and the start of earnings season at home. The pan-European Stoxx 600 hovered around the flatline in early trade, with tech stocks shedding 2.4% to lead losses on the back of weak U.S. earinings, while mining stocks added 1.4%. Markets in Asia-Pacific were mixed overnight as investors digested a slew of economic data across the region. Japan's Nikkei 225 led losses after the country posted a surprise trade surplus of 43 billion yen ($308 million), its first surplus in 23 months. Stateside, Nasdaq 100 futures slid in after-hours trading Wednesday evening as shares of Netflix sank after the company missed second-quarter earnings expectations.

Mercedes won't join Renault's new electric van project-sources

PARIS, June 2 (Reuters) - Mercedes Benz Group (MBGn.DE), a longtime partner of Renault (RENA.PA) in vans, won't take part in the French company's FlexEvan electric project and will focus instead on its own premium electric vehicle VAN.EA, two sources with knowledge of the matter said. A spokeswoman of Mercedes confirmed that the group had no plan to launch a mid-sized van or a large one on a different platform than VAN.EA. Renault has long sought to expand its cooperation in vans with Mercedes, but in vain. "It is true that for light commercial vehicles, the bulk (of the cooperation with Mercedes) has been done", one of the sources said. REUTERS/Aly Song/File PhotoApril 27 (Reuters) - Geely's EV brand Zeekr is the latest to join a growing list of automakers that have turned to the "gigapress" die casting technique pioneered by Tesla to slash the cost of electric cars. "In the future, Zeekr will use giga-casting technology on more models," Jiang said. Metal and plastic die casting has long been used in manufacturing, but its application to large aluminium underbodies in carmaking is relatively new. The front and rear sections are then connected with large under-floor battery packs to form a three-piece EV chassis. 'MEGA-CASTING'Other automakers turning to large die casting include General Motors (GM.N), which is using the technology to help design its Cadillac Celestiq electric saloon.
Swedish electric vehicle maker Polestar cut its annual net losses in half last year, while revenue surged and it attempted to set itself apart from other EV startups. The company on Thursday reported an 84% increase in revenue for 2022 to roughly $2.5 billion as it exceeded a 50,000-vehicle delivery target. The majority of that increase will come from an updated Polestar 2 EV, according to Ingenlath. The company is releasing two new EVs this year – Polestar 3 and Polestar 4 – that are expected to hit their production strides in 2024. Polestar's relatively positive results come after other EV startups like Lucid , Nikola and Rivian reported ongoing problems with supply chains and production, causing them to miss production or sales targets.
Polestar, the Swedish electric performance car company, has announced that the world premiere of its next car, the Polestar 3 electric performance SUV, will be in October 2022. Swedish electric vehicle maker Polestar said Friday that it is still on track to deliver 50,000 vehicles in 2022 after its factory resumed full production following disruptions from Covid outbreaks in China. Polestar said it delivered 9,215 vehicles in the third quarter, bringing its total deliveries so far this year to about 30,400 vehicles. Polestar is a joint venture between Sweden's Volvo Cars and Geely, which has owned Volvo Cars since 2010. The Polestar 3 is expected to make its formal debut at an event in Copenhagen on Wednesday, with production beginning soon thereafter.
